Having been in the military for 8 years I did hear from an old veteran of World War II that was stationed around Los Angeles at that time... he told me that it was a very elaborate drill and they wanted to know how the public would react and how the air defense would suffice if indeed an attack did happen. I honestly believe that because he was a very respectable man and I had no reason to believe he would lie. I asked him why it was never publicized he said he had no idea but maybe it had something to do with the deaths that occurred, in which I would also find that feasible. I do know for my service over the years that things like this DO take place. I have actually been a part of them in Fort Knox, Kentucky. So in all honesty that's what I think happened.

@Skater/ Kid - I live in Arizona, right next to Boeing helicopter plant. They're constantly testing different helicopters including Apaches (it's pretty cool to watch.) Well I remember perfectly one night when I was outside walking my dogs really late at night, probably around midnight, when I started to hear a deep humming sound slowly getting louder and louder. I could not find the source of the sound to save my life so I started to freak out. Finally I looked up and I noticed 5 read lights in a single file line slowly moving in the sky, maybe 10-20mph ( 16-32kmh) about 100 ft high off the ground. As they got closer to me I realized they were heading in the direction of the Boeing plant. When they finally were above me I was able to make out that they were indeed helicopters with just a single little red light in the front. They were incredibly quiet! For a second I genuinely thought they were UFOs until I was able to make out the actual shape of the heli. Well, guess what, the next day there were several UFO sightings all around the Phoenix area. Now anytime I see reported sightings of UFOs I immediately think of what kind of next-level tech the military is working on. A good example of another unexplainable phenomena would be the super loud booms people have been reporting world-wide including in rural parts of Alaska and Alabama. No one has been able to give a credible reasoning for this phenomena, but I strongly believe it's US' military next level hyper-sonic plane that Skunkworks has been working on now for about a decade. Just last year these loud booms were reported throughout China, well it turns out that China has been working on their own hyper-sonic plane that is supposedly basically just a knock-off version of the one that US is working on. The point is that the similarities in the reports is almost enough evidence to point towards the secret military tech (it also helps that China is being a little less secretive about their plane.)

That makes sense. I was also thinking it could’ve been sort of a false flag attack intending to solidify civilian commitment to the war. News of an attack on the mainland in Los Angeles of all places would be sure to get around the country quickly and further shock the public into gearing for war. Enlist, buy bonds, collect scrap, etc. As you said they might’ve considered it harmless until a number of civilians died supposedly as a result.

Headquarters, battleships. aircraft carriers and heavy cruisers, were stationed in Los Angeles Harbor [San Pedro], close to the [Long Beach] Naval Shipyard. Light cruisers, destroyers and submarines were stationed at [San Diego]. During the summer of that year, as part of the U.S. response to Japanese expansionism, it was instructed to take an "advanced" position at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Long term basing at Pearl Harbor was so strongly opposed by the commander, Admiral James O. Richardson, that he personally protested in Washington. Political considerations were thought sufficiently important that he was relieved by Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, who was in command at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Some information about this may be incorrect at 5:55: The I-400 class was designed with the range to travel anywhere in the world and return. A fleet of 18 boats was planned in 1942, and work started on the first in January 1943 at the Kure, Hiroshima arsenal. Within a year the plan was scaled back to five, of which only three (I-400 at Kure, and I-401 and I-402 at Sasebo) were completed. Following Yamamoto's death in April 1943, the number of aircraft-carrying submarines to be built was reduced from eighteen to nine, then five and finally three. Only I-400 and I-401 actually entered service; I-402 was completed on 24 July 1945, five weeks before the end of the war, but never made it to sea. They built 42 J2-I6 but none of these were capable as an aircraft carrier. Remaining I-8´s had a large cargo area and were used in milk runs to Germany: I-8 left Brest on 5 October, with a cargo of German equipment, such as: machine guns, bomb sights, a Daimler-Benz torpedo boat engine, marine chronometers, radars, sonar equipment, anti-aircraft gunsights, electric torpedoes, and penicillin. The submarine also transported Rear Admiral Yokoi, naval attaché to Berlin since 1940; Captain Hosoya, naval attaché to France since December 1939; three German officers and four radar and hydrophone technicians.

Entertaining as always. But the Japanese actually built only two aircraft carrier submarines. I-400 and I-401 entered service so late in the war, that their war time service was ineffective. There was an option by Admiral Yamamoto to build 40, but following his death, that number was cut to 20...then only the two that were completed. Then information about the I-400 series is readily available right here on KZbin under Submarine warfare in the Pacific during WW2.

Excellent, as usual! I've been intrigued by this particular mass sighting for some time. War jitters perhaps, particularly after the attack on the Cali refineries the previous day, but for several trained searchlight units at considerable ground separation and hence with numerous viewing angles, to simultaneously converge on a single target... it is obtuse to claim that nothing was overflying that night.

J McClain AA of the time tends to use height activated fuses. For any AA shell of any size to achieve a direct hit on a plane is borderline impossible, they were set to explode at a certain altitude, to send shrapnel into aircraft, which I imagine would cause little harm on the ground.
@BoarVessel-BCEtruscanCer-xy7et6 жыл бұрын
William Wykoff No, but if they thought they saw something at say 10,000ft, they set the fuse at 10,000ft. They didn't have proximity fuzes at the time, so it would explode due to human control.

Why is it crazy? This was mere months after Pearl Harbor - and the US fully expected the Japanese to at least attempt an air raid on the west coast. Hence why there were AA batteries, spotlights, and air wardens in the city in the first place. It’s nice to be able to question things in hindsight, but one needs to keep things in perspective. We were literally in the midst of a world war.

Dude, if you were worried about people being hit by spent rounds and shrapnel you should have experienced the Sheffield Blitz about two and a half miles downrange from a AAA battery. It genuinely looked like a jagged steel snow had fallen each morning.
@ianmacfarlane12416 жыл бұрын
"Dude", I'm pretty certain that you weren't there during the Sheffield Blitz, considering that it was 77 years ago (December 1940), unless you're a social media savvy 90 year old, who uses the term "dude". Besides, Sheffield was far from the only British city to have copped it during WW2, as I'm sure the residents of London, Coventry, Clydebank and others will testify. Let's not forget about the dozens of cities in mainland Europe who experienced the horror of aerial bombardment between 1936 (Guernica 1937) and 1945 Dresden. It's sad to think that bombing of civilian populations is still happening today.
@morelenmir6 жыл бұрын
Dude!!! Did I say I was? I do however have an album full of photographs--many in colour--and my father's collection of shrapnel to illustrate those days to me very clearly. 'Iron snow' are exactly the words they used to describe it. He and my uncle would walk around their council-house garden as soon as all-clear was sounded, with torches despite the blackout and collect it up, trading their day's haul for more interesting pieces with their friends at school the next morning. On a shelf in front of me right now I have my father's favourite that he kept his entire life; an almost complete tail section of a shell with all the driving bands complete and only the nose section missing. He reckoned it had been a dud whose bursting charge fizzled that was fired form the big AAA piece that was mounted onto a railway carriage and only trundled out of hiding within a tunnel when the German raids came over. Both told me about their experiences in depth. Both soon afterwards joined the RAF after lying about their ages and did their bit, giving back every bit as much as they received. I would _very_ happily have him come and reminisces with you about all this first hand. I would be ecstatic for him to do this right now. You see he was a *totally* media-savvy 87 year old gentleman who used all the modern methods of communication to remain in contact with his family and friends, using both facebook and Twiter; latterly watching more on KZbin than he ever did on television. Unfortunately he died riddled with cancer after only 13 days of knowing he suffered the disease. One of the last things we ever discussed were his memories of the war years around the pit villages of South Yorkshire--villages I know as well as he did having lived my entire life here.

Dark5, was it 9 tons or 90 Tons of Ammo? As i calculated 9 Tons through 9 Kilograms (weight from a German 8,8cm Grenade), it would have been only 1000 shots. Wich makes 50 Minutes of Sustained Fire for one Gun. A coastal defense scheme would have several Batteries, each Battery with 16 Guns (German 8,8 Employment again. So a Battery alone would consume 9 Tons in 3 Minutes. As for a Town like LA one Battery would not be enough, there might have been (as i do not know right now) 4. With 4 Gun Batterys firing, this would have only lasted 45 Seconds?? (Shooting down a B17 in WW2 took several thousand shells in firing Barrages).Sorry when this sounds that im trolling around here, but this might have been a rather fast UFO, or somebody accidentally ringed the Alarm Bell, or you forgot 81 Tons ;). However, nice narrated as ever, interesting Story.Thank you for sharing this Story.

From what I can gather (in ten minutes) the AA guns would probably have been 3" M3 Guns which were used in an anti-aircraft and coastal defence role at the time - the projectile is listed variously at being 12lbs to 15lbs in different sources (maybe different projectiles). Nevertheless, it does seem that the US did use a 12.8lbs gun in an anti-aircraft role at the time. (Alongside M2 Browning .50 càl) It would seem likely that the 9tons is accurate as there was no mention of "sustained fire" in any report that I've seen.

All the legit UFO video I've seen clearly shows intelligence and awareness. They tend to didi mau before anything gets too close or just a bit before and after a targeting computer gets a lock. Radar picked something up that night, and if it were a plane it would've been blasted to bits.

Dark Docs, good quality content but like the somerton man this (if you’re a ufo fan) is quite well known. How about a vid on Tunguska?

Okay so I've never shot anti aircraft guns but I believe if it was a weather balloon than it's either 1. This soldiers were recruits 2. This soldiers had shit aim I understand it was night time but I think they had a lot of searchlights pointing at the object so missing would be pretty hard. But once again I've never fired anti aircraft guns so yeah

To because fire arms were in accurate at the time and gravity take a heavy affect

they must have launched a shit load of weather balloons back then. Every time someone sees something weird, it's a weather balloon.

The radars used were first generation, not very efficient, and notoriously unreliable. Compared to today's versions, radar at that time were virtually worthless

Well it was Amelia Earhart, who after crashing into the Pacific managed to rig up the decomposing corpses of dolphins into a ballon to float home to safety but........

Given what we now know from piles of studies into the veracity of "eye witness" accounts, plus the panic factor, we can safely put this one in the false alarm basket. Weather balloon for sure.

The reason I don't buy the weather balloon excuse is easy, there were way more than one weather balloon at that time, how is this the only instance of the military mistaking one for a craft and firing 1400 rounds in an hour at it? Should've happened more than once during that time, if it were a viable explanation, which it isn't.

It's embarrassing how so many people love to jump on the "alien aircraft" bandwagon. Flocks of birds and even insects show up on radar and, after Pearl Harbor, it wouldn't have taken anything more than that to have people freaking out.

It's even more-embarrassing that you're pretending somebody else is wrong for not-knowing when you don't either. There's more of a chance of aliens flying around our planet right now than you actually knowing what happened that night.
