Yes, my restoration consisted of disassembling the bell, taking off all the old paint and repainting it. As well as cleaning all the operating parts, and replacing some hardware. I didn't have to fix the mechanism though, because as you said it still works. Another example of a great American made quality item.

Lionel-and-Marx-Trains how do you loosen the gong (the part that strikes the bell to make it ring)? I just got a teardrop bell that has a very worn gong and I want to rotate the gong so it will ring better. This thing struck the bell so many times it's worn at an angle and left an impression in the bell.

***** Sorry for the delayed response. I will try to help you, but it is a little confusing without pictures. If you want to rotate the gong, you have to loosen the bolt in the center on the front. Then once you have the bolt out, turn the gong to the left and spin it until it comes off. You said that it left an impression, if you mean the circular impression on the gong that is supposed to be there. I think you may have your terms backwards, the gong is the circular part on the front of the bell that the striker hits. I think you may be referring to the striker as the gong? If you want you can email us at lionelmarxtrains@gmail.com. Then we can send pictures and I can try to understand the situation better and then help you fix your problem.

No the bell had an impression but I rotated it. How do I loosen the bolt that holds the gong if the bolt is flat? It's not like a hex nut or anything, so do I just rotate the gong to loosen it? The bolt looks more like a rivet. It's nearly flush with the arm that the gong us mounted on.

***** You can try to turn the entire gong and bolt to the left, if it starts to rotate you will have to spin it several times until it comes off. I wish you had a picture of it, then I could probably help more.

That circle on the side is a peep hole and you can open it to see the clapper move.

BBT609 actually it is to adjust how loud the bell is.

This bell might be from the late 1910s.

Yes, this is one of the older versions. Since it only says Union and not the later US&S Co.

Lionel-and-Marx-Trains Would you please ring it at ~100/minute for me?
@PereMarquette122310 жыл бұрын
Boy you got some luck finding a first generation Teardrop in the woods... Not saying you stole it or anything but that's like a one in a million chance of finding one for free.
@LionelandMarxTrains10 жыл бұрын
I didn't find it for free. As it says in the video description it had been sitting in the woods for many years. Those woods are owned by someone I know. It was on their property with other railroad items that they had collected over the years. They didn't just give it to me either, I bought it. But in the condition it was in I got a pretty good deal.
