Very interesting discussion! In the language learning communities I see a similar issue all the time, too - the advice, methods, strategies etc. all land differently for each person. Some people take them as a general guideline to improve their own strategies, others (on the other end of the spectrum) will treat whatever's been said as religion and almost immediately become stuck in those new ways that they haven't even gotten to test 👀. Genuinely fascinating how differently people react to information, but the common trend I see is that people are very risk-averse (scared of experimentation and learning from mistakes) and not considering why any piece of advice/strategy actually works (missing the forest for the trees) and the underlying principles. I think a loose mentality towards... life is really good beneficial here. It makes you more open, "slower" and reflective, and ultimately it makes you a better learner and practitioner in all sorts of things.
@Parrot58849 ай бұрын
Another factor here, I think, is how we tend to become dogmatic when we have absolutely no idea what we're doing, and therefore have no confidence in our own ability to make a good evaluation of something. When we don't trust ourselves to make a good evaluation, we just don't evaluate anything and instead follow rules or techniques blindly and unquestioningly. It's just another manifestation of a fear of failure, but it's also something that tends to resolve itself slowly as we get a better idea of what we're doing.

The most important steps on the cycle are both keeping track if everything is going as planned, and then realizing what did work in the end, and improving what didnt. Basically planning is super important but refining is way more... i could see a relation for what you told in the video. Basically you should aways be looking for ways to improve what you do.

In a video, you mentioned that one technique we could use to reach the top 1% is to think about what a 1% student would do. In that video, I thought, "Alright, I wouldn’t know how to answer that question because if I knew what a student like that would do, I’d have already done it." So, I said, "Okay, I'll use people who are already there as examples because that would be easier." But now, in this video, you're saying I can’t use real-life examples. Yet, I have questions every day, not just about the scenarios you’ve described.

After bad results I would recommend: 1. Communcation: 1.1 e.g. talk with other students of your learning/lab group) about learning stuff (theories, practical lab results) and how to preparing for exam. 1.2. Explain others what you've learned. If you can't explain it it with your words, you have not yet understand. 2. New/other information resources: e.g. a better book or multimedia video / audio podcast from the university library. This is also about how to search and find select good quality information! First scan for relevant information pieces than watch out for easy (brain-friendly) style pictures / summaries, Q&A, etc. 3. Self-Check before real/critical exam tests: 3.1 Q&A-Tests from learning information sources (e.g. lecture examples, books with question section after each chapter and correct answers). 3.2 Older exam tests available? 3.3 Optimize: Try to see typical questions and collect them in familiar test question categories. Sometimes you may find shortcuts when solving the question or calculation. Make your way of solution easier for yourself so that you have less stress during the real critical exam test situation. Creating your own solution recipy/algorithm trains your problem solving skills additionally! 4. Meet & Communicate with others before the real/critical exam and explain your progress and how you solve them. When I studied electrical + computer engineering (1986-1990) I shared what and how I used (best/better) books from the uni lib, self-recognized question categories (groups of typical similar questions) and how I made the solution way easier for calculating requested results. That way focusses you on "learning by teaching" (a specialization after learning by doing), which I saw later my children doing this approach in their classes.

I guess it all comes down to finding learning gaps. If you are relentless in your pursuit of finding learning gaps you become a top student. And most techniques revolve around finding them. So the more you setup your methods around finding these the more you succeed. That's why if you have a massive ego you never end up reaching your full potential, and you're termed as 'lazy'. So the more relentless you are at hunting down each gap you see in your understanding the better you perform. Also don't forget what you already know haha :)

Your advices were very precise. I took notes of things you said. And tried them. I can group words and read them but i seperate the words. For example lets say there is a given sentence like " I love your channel because it helped me a lot.". I read it as "I love....", "your channel...." , "because it..." , "helped me..." , "a lot.". So i take every 2 words seperatedly so I can't connect "I love..." and "your channel..." for example. So does it need more practice or am i doing something wrong?

@王沛元9 ай бұрын
From my perspective, to compensate this video, which could be wrong that the reason why the top learner could achieve this sort of thinking is because: 1. They know what they should do that make an effective change. 2. They know that the reason why they don’t do well must because there have a problem in their own method and know that even the ‘change’ fail to change the result, is also would be a common scenario. 3. They have growth mindset that they see challenge, failure as an opportunity to improve 4. They constantly reflect themselves of what habit is potentially obtrusive to their goal and when they realize, they would change these sort of factors. 5. They had to challenge themselves and tested themselves to develop a self-regulation ability through developing their metacognition as first. My thinking could be wrong and I’m open to you guys queries to improve myself.

Hi Justin.I think the reason I am not a top student is my mindset regarding exams. I study consistently before the exam and do a few revisions through practice problems but just before the exam I feel the need to go through the topic in detail. In the exams I am able to do the difficult and easy questions but I struggle with intermediate ones. It is also because I still can't figure how to make short notes that would be adequate enough to cover every topic briefly before exams and leave many of these topics unseen. Due to this my brain gets loaded with lots of information and it starts to slip out(along with the important ones). I kindly request for your guide to make short notes of which I can do quicker spaced repetition. I have tried studying from the guided study with me video of yours but due to absence of an I-Pad I am limited by the size of my whiteboard. So I am not being able to study like in the video. I only do that if the content is completely new, the rest of the time when I'm studying, I rewrite my notes so many times just by memory. When exams come, I can almost rewrite my entire notes by understanding it so well through active recall. You need to use different methods and find what works for you. That takes time. For me I study the paragraph and highlight imp topics and on its side I write in 1 line what the paragraph is about. So when I read it again I know what is it about. Also make interconnected mind maps of topics. Writing things with your hands puts it in your memory for a longer time. To compare and contrast two things I put the points in table format. Every student has a different style of learning, try different things. Most important is you have an interest in the topic/subject. Many a times it is not fun so you have to find ways to make it more palatable.

You're right, he does tip-toe a bit. But I think what he's saying is "you need to take a science-based (trial & error) approach to finding the method for studying that's most effective for you. Copying and pasting other people's techniques and hoping for the best isn't a behavior that the top 0.1% of students have." It all was very much a push to get people to buy his course, and the information he gave was kind of... duh? But I say "duh" and yet tons of people are still copying and pasting without thinking and hoping for the best. As a collective, I wonder if we're losing our ability to think for ourselves and enjoy the journey of experimentation.

Justin are we devieving ourselves? I am below average IQ. So, are we lying to ourselves about our capacity?

Human potential is unlimited. An IQ score cannot determine your capacity, my friend. Just keep going, keep doing your best and after a few years, you'll realize how much you improved.

when you say most people can't become a top 0.1% are you talking about raw intelligence, mentality, effort or something else ?
@howmathematicianscreatemat92267 ай бұрын
Of course raw intelligence counts too. Top 0.1% basically reinvent large parts of their studies out of themselves. They are basically partially the authors of their own books. Of course an attitude like not being afraid to fail with trying to be creative counts a lot too.

It seems guru's typically like to spread information related to concepts compared to factuals but it's understanding, they're knowledge is what they're advertising so it makes sense that they don't actually say anything factual, however it brings an awareness of said subject.

Also, thank you for giving content for contemplation & journaling! This is great stuff!! Sorry, for the cursing had to use some science, that causes even generational trauma? Insane right?

I didn't learn anything from the video. He just narrated the problem in detail. There is no solution provided to the problem. It felt like just a well structured advertisement to make people click the link and make a payment. #notrecommended#donotwasteyourtime
