The Unique C3 Corvette Power Steering System

For today's video, I'll give a brief description of the C3 power steering system, which is unique in regards to the other GM power steering systems used during this time period. I will identify the individual components that make up the system, and demonstrate how to remove the entire assembly as a whole unit.

The Borgensen is nice because it's a ready-made kit with all the required hardware and brackets.

I'm currently running a borgeson unit on my 75 c3 and the hose setup is much nicer. It does come with its own issues though. The frame was never designed to handle that much force from the steering box so if you have too install girders to keep the frame from flexing when you turn the wheel or else the steering gets squirrelly.

Hey Mako, it's like any other small business. You put in a bunch of work, and you make a decent living to put food on the table for the family. In my case, I get to work with something I love, but I still haven't made enough to buy my island in the Bahamas😂. Some parts sell faster than others, like engines and drivetrains, but other pieces will hang around for awhile until the right person comes along looking for them. One thing is for certain, in this business you need to know your product and customer, or you'll lose money quickly. Since Corvette parts are just as popular as some illicit products😁, I don't really need to pay eBay 15% just to move inventory. I sell more via word of mouth and referral than anything else.

Well, those power steering hoses are definitely on backwards and should be crisscrossed. That makes for a demonic, possessed steering wheel. Ask me how I know lolol

MY 65 289 MUSTANG HAS THE SAME POWER STEERING SYSTEM WITH THE ASSISTED BOOSTER. THAT'S WHERE GM GOT IT FROM WHICH EVEN GOES FURTHER BACK TO THE EARLY FALCONS.

@@VetteSource I ALSO HAD A 1978 GREMLIN WITH MANUAL STEERING. ONE NIGHT I WAS CUT OFF IN THE RAIN AND HIT A CURB AND TWISTING THE SHAFT OF THE STEERING BOX. SINCE AMC WAS CONSIDERED A BASTARD CAR USING PARTS FROM OTHER MANUFACTURERS. THE MANUAL STEERING BOX IN MY GREMLIN WAS THE IDENTICAL BOX USED IN THE 1965 MANUAL STEERING CORVETTE. THAT SURPRISED ME TO NO END.

Yea, I can imagine the manufacturers would use whatever off the shelf components they could to lower production costs. It seems that practice is in full force today with most products.

@@VetteSource THAT 1978 GREMLIN ALSO HAD A 121 CUBIC INCH 4-CYLINDER WHICH WAS A CARBURETED VERSION OF THE SAME EXACT MOTOR IN A 924 PORSCHE. IT ALSO USED A BRITISH STYLE FORD 4-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION.

How long are you soaking these bolts before they basically fall off ???😂😂😂 My 77 sat up in NY in a field fir 15 yrs.. I look at a bolt wrong.. SNAP ! LOL

It's funny, I was expecting this thing to give me all kinds of grief since it sat in a field buried in the mud for the last 10 years. Imagine my amazement when they came off like you mentioned. Sometimes, the Corvette God's do decide to smile in your favor😁.
