High strength, cast steel track pads connected with rubber bushed steel pins permits track flexibility while preventing metal to metal wear and dirt contamination. Individual pads are easily replaced in the field by removing connecting pins. The "live" action, combined with the long, wide track design puts more track area on the ground. This results in minimizing ground pressure and soil compaction.
The characteristics of the KMC HSST Vehicles, from the "live" steel track and torsion bar suspension through to the front drive sprockets, are the key to the unique performance advantages of this machine. High speed, reliable power, superior traction and a light notation effect on the ground surface are the characteristics offering the most potential benefits to the forest industry.
The superior traction of the KMC HSST Vehicle enable these machines to make more efficient use of available engine power than wheeled skidders and crawler tractors.
Basically, the KMC HSST vehicle combines the payload of a crawler tractor with the speed of a wheeled skidder, thus being capable of skidding a substantially higher log volume per productive machine hour (mph) than other log skidding machines under most terrain conditions. In addition, because of its high speed, longer skidding distances can be used, reducing the cost and need for the extent of truck roads and log landings required by other logging systems.
As the KMC HSST Vehicle has the traction, flotation and stability for work on adverse slopes and side hills in wet, muddy and soft terrain and on deep snow, the concept also enables the extension of the logging season and the better utilization of equipment.
Because of the weight distribution and tractability, the concept allows the machine to pull loads on adverse grades up to 40% and skid favorable grades up to 60%, the range being dependent on local ground conditions. This capability substantially reduces the amount of skid trail construction and consequent soil disturbance.
