It amazes me how despite the ace attorney series being know for its quirk and ridiculous characters/situations it still manages to make a lot of these characters feel real, maks us connect with them and even portray serious topics such as depression and trauma in a way that makes us emphatize with these characters in a respectful way

I actually like what edgeworth did with andrews. Not that I actually approve of the action, but I like how it was written. It said a lot about the type of ruthless person he can still be, even after improving himself. He effectively became an "anti-hero" in that moment, being willing to play the bad guy if it meant getting to the truth. That mirrored phoenix's situation as well, having to play a different role in order to uphold his values.

Did some research into Dysthymia for Uni, and Roger could definitely qualify. People with Dysthymia are often on autopilot and not really there in the present, hence why they think about past mistakes a lot. He says "a show is only as good as how loud, flashy and trashy it is", which implies he's sort of on autopilot himself with his career - as well as some self-punishment.

Adrian Andrews is a character I can relate to a lot, Id always put up a front that I rarely cared about people despite not always being that way but I low key always longed to have a friend who would understand me. Easier said than done when Im just faking an air of indifference to say the least so of course no one ever picked up on it. But even unknown to me I was extremely codependent deep down but it took a lot for me to ever get attached to anyone and when I did it felt so embarrassing and shameful to admit even I got anxious when theyd disappear. I was just stuck in such a cycle where I was convinced people would eventually get sick of me if they knew how unconfident I really was until I just broke when I perceived that happened but it was because someone else was dealing with their own issues for a time. Discovering then that I had to be more honest with myself, less harsh beating myself up and learning to open up has made me feel comfortable in being myself again to the point where I dont need to fake being aloof and can actually let my feelings be felt even the negative ones. It took months but man I really needed that release and validation that I wasnt insane for feeling that way not to mention the root of it all was a traumatic experience growing up that I just needed to process instead of pretend it wasnt there. Can say the same for edgeworth, despite him disappearing to discover what it meant to be a prosecutor and maybe hurting phoenix making him think he mightve died I have sympathy to how he needed time to sort his issues from his childhood trauma and how he was just so hesitant to accept help and eventually mellowing out to accepting phoenix's friendship its just great to see all these characters grow.

The one character that I have found the fandom consistently misinterprets is Godot. I watched a 2 hour long video about him and the essayist missed, like half of what composes his arc. Trials and tribulations is attempting to put the audience in the shoes of a woman. Every case in the game features a depiction of someone dealing with the expectations people have of their gender, especially Godot! It's his concept of men as protectors that drives him to resent Phoenix and kill Misty Fey. The dude is essentially always talking down to women every chance he gets, and it usually correlates with how he is feeling in the moment. His most explicit and angry misogyny moment happens with Franziska after he's been sitting with his guilt for 24 hours, waiting for the bridge the bridge to be repaired. It's all there in the text, whether Shu Takumi or the localizers intended to put it in or not, and it fits in perfectly with the central themes of the game. Why is nobody talking about this 😭
@abigailfoster9732
@abigailfoster9732 9 күн бұрын
I love this. Usually when the themes are about gender roles, whatever media it is, they usually hyperfocus on the female side of it. I’d say Godot, much like Roger Reinz, is also somewhat living in the past, only going about it differently by, like you said, talking down to the women around him. I think to put it plainly and in my opinion, i think Godot is a really good representation of Toxic masculinity WITHOUT hamming it up to 11. (Feel free to correct me on any of this, i may have gotten some things wrong and honestly idm if it means I can talk about my long time favorite ace attorney character.)
@nullvoid3265
@nullvoid3265 9 күн бұрын
@@abigailfoster9732 exactly on the money! And the best part about godot is that his toxic masculinity is central to his character arc. It all flows from that fatal flaw of his! And it's not just him, but basically every case has a minimum of 2 characters who are having conflicts based on their gendered expectations. I mean, the way the court treats Mia vs Dahlia (miles calls her a fucking bimbo!!!) How Ron Delite becomes a thief to provide for his wife. How Mia has to charm Victor Kudo. Fucking Jean Armstrong? Like, everywhere I look in this game I see characters with arcs that tie into gender. I fucking love trials and tribulations.

@@nullvoid3265 same, it was my first AA game that i saw. A channel called Lets Dub Project did a full dubbed playthrough of it and i remember as a kid always ended up rewatching the last few episodes of Bridge to the turnabout just for godot.

NO THAT'S WRONG... in my opinion. just saying that Godot is massive misogynist is flat out wrong imo and doesn't explore the complexities of his character when so much more could be said about his treatment of other characters, as, Godot is another character who I think could be suffering from depression. After Mia's death he doesn't really know what he's doing, he's lost the woman he loves, who as we know holds in incredibly high esteem, the killer has been caught there's nothing for him to do now which starts to anger him, Godot feels like he has to make up for not being there so he starts his plan to save Maya most likely hoping that it can give him some kind of redemption in his own eyes and starts becoming Phoenix's number 1 hater be because he wasn't there, and here's the big thing I believe, this was not any kind of misogyny or because a man has to protect a woman, he was quite simply grieving and taking it out on others the entire story to avoid confronting his own self loathing. Another thing I want to mention is why I think Franziska pissed Godot off so much is that on a level her and Diego Armando were similar, looking down on others for not having their level of expertise or skill, we can see that this happened with Mia in the flashback case, slowly he gains respect for he over time but at the start he looked down in her and he probably did with a lot of starting attorneys and in his own left hatred he starts getting get angry at Franziska for acting similarly to how he did and thinking someone a level beneath them without and good reason, basically what I'm saying is that alot of his misogyny is moreso his own self loathing and grief manifesting in attacks against others. I'll replay T&T to make sure this isn't just senseless dribble but for now this is what I got.
@nullvoid3265
@nullvoid3265 8 күн бұрын
@@Door3234 you're just reading the character on a surface level. You don't even disagree with my reading, you're just not engaging with it. Imo T&T doesn't even support that they were dating at all (I haven't seen the anime and don't think it should be considered as part of the text of the game). The only way we are told as an audience that they were dating is through Marvin Grossberg in case 1. I suppose you could also argue that Godot's reactions to seeing Mia could imply that he has strong feelings for her, but that is not the same. I think given how mia acts towards godot in all their interactions, they never actually dated. That's just something others thought about them. It's a narrative that was put onto her by her peers, and boss clearly. Every case in trials and tribulations has some kind of deceit or subterfuge as a core of its story. Things are rarely what they initially seem to be, and I am tired of the fandom not catching on that the imposition of the dating narrative is another example of it. Respectfully, you are not engaging with my point and are just reflexively spitting back a surface level analysis at me, claiming it disproves what I said.

It's fascinating how ace attorney has so many big, quirky characters but they still get these sorts of nuances. Adrian is one of the most obvious cases but Valant and Reitinz are interesting to highlight (also that point of shame is very accurate and strangely I've not heard it spoken about that much)

Yeah, games are another way of story telling after all, and everything can be up to interpretation.. Maybe a character wasn't design to be that deep.. But even if they were or don't.. If a character resonates with you that's all that matters.. And I like how this franchise and many others are an example of this.. Also.. I like a fan project, called "elements of justice" is.. A merge between ace attorney and.. Another franchise.. Despite how silly the concept might appear.. I think that fan project also does a good job in making really deep characters... Specially crusading for a turnabout.. Case that the best way to describe it is "a tragedy" a tragedy for everyone involved.. How each character was left wounded after that.. Even the defense and prosecution.. Is really powerful how someone can communicate so much with games

Ill be homest, while I fully agree with your takes on Roger having depression I think at some point we need to recognize that while we can understand someone does not mean we can justify or defend their actions. Like, not saying that you did do that, but at the end of the day I think you were a bit too soft on the lad. Murder regardless of circumstance or reason will almost always be a net negative and morally corrupt. Depression can be the path thst leads to this atrocity, both on others and... oneself. And treating it with the weight and severity that it deserves is important. But once that line has been crossed, I dont think there is going back. Then again he is a videos game character so I guess this case aint that deep

As someone who deals with depression, it makes me happy when things get it right; whether it be movies or video games. I feel people are better understanding these days because it's more talked about. I don't hear/see people saying "just be happy!" as much any more.
