Hi folks! Thanks for the warm reception on the video. Just wanted to put a couple of things here to preempt anything. - The video is a little quieter as I was using my old mic (which has an awful buzzing noise if I put it up too high), and when I went to try to use my new one it was completely unbalanced and couldn't figure out how to fix that. - In a similar line, I do mispronounce a couple of things. I think there's only two - aside from my personal pronounciation of Khura'in - but as mentioned I found it rather difficult to re-record any audio. - I would love to do more Ace Attorney videos especially in the leadup to Investigations Remastered, so if you have any ideas I'd love to hear them! That's all for now, but if you have any questions let me know. -V

Dont worry about repeating the discourse around AJ triology, it's not like people usually look at Apollo individually. I really liked how you verbalized that Apollo is more about honesty than just truth. Its literally his power to notice if people aren't quite acting like themselves but the word never came to me. It's also probably because the AJ Triology had somewhat bigger stakes conflict, with the Dark Age of the Law, compared to the original trilogy, but Apollo usually take things more intensely, I mean, his bracelet literally creates pressure for him to act, so I really like the reading of him internalizing his feelings until it all burst out on SJ. Great analysis!

I find it a bit strange that you never directly bring up Apollo's lingering distrust of wright himself, not just Kristoph or Athena. True, he looks up to him as a lawyer even in his low point, but he clearly has a strong hatred over being taken advantage of, which is what happens in 4-1, when he punches Wright for lying to him about the forged card. This desire to have agency is never really made prominent again until dual destinies. I imagine part of Apollo's secrecy comes down to the fact that everyone around him is hiding or has hidden a secret at one point or another.

Oh what a delight this video was. To be honest, all the facts you presented, as well as the thematic thread between them, are why Apollo is actually my favorite Ace Attorney character, also one of my favorite in media. While I do hate the inconsistencies between his backstories and pretty much a majority of what Dual Destinies did to most characters but him especially (I mean, Yamazaki did admit that the writing behind Apollo there was pretty much 100% "why is Apollo acting like that?" shock factor), I love how all the facts we get about him don't necessarily cancel each other and are rather random life facts coming from a very private person. I love whenever the fandom explores that privacy of his because it often ties all of his portrayals perfectly. Also putting aside the whole Clay thing, I like to think that Apollo's more stoic attitude in Dual Destinies is just the effect of his idealistic view of Phoenix being brutally crushed by AA4 events. Never meet your heroes, kids.

I agree on most of this good video! I like Apollo as a character and even AA4 despite all of its flaws. Though I’m glad his arc is somewhat concluded, I do want him to come back as a side character in the future to complete the “Gramarye siblings” plot, but also because I want him to have more cases with Athena. Having them working together is just so fun and entertaining.

Dude, my man, holy crap. I don't know HOW, but I forgot about Jove Justice. You just reminded me of him and somehow that gave new perspective for me on Apollo. I only ever really think about Dhurke as his dad since he is the dad who stepped up. I know it's not Jove's fault, but wow is he forgettable. Also, for me, Apollo is my favorite protagonist to play as. I love his straight man reactions to everything. I love that he just wants to be a normal lawyer and do his job, even the boring paperwork. Character wise though, yeah he is a bit one note, though really so is Phoenix. Phoenix went from a sponge of a man who just took on whatever anyone else told him and did that, to a man who genuinely wanted to defend those who were innocent and needed help. But think about it, he changed his career choice from art to law just because of Mia and Edgeworth. He acted like a whole different person when dating Iris & Dahlia, and he only ever used to talk about how he became a lawyer because of Larry, Miles and Mia. He was always just soaking up what others did or said in his life and acting accordingly. He didn't start out knowing what he wanted like Apollo or Athena did. He didn't have any real personality other than lawyer and chasing people out of his reach desperately and hopefully, he didn't seem to have any side interests or beliefs or anything to him other than that, until AJ gave him some new character. So the fact that Apollo also took a few games to get some character set up isn't bad, if anything it is the norm. Athena on the other hand gets character right away and is shown to have other sides to her. She is my favorite character wise of the protagonists.

A few possible reasons we lack characterization for Apollo (& Klavier too lol) - Change in game director, Shu Takumi into Takeshi Yamazaki (his assistant) - Corporate fighting against creative freedom. Shu wanted to break away from Phoenix Wright, feeling that his story was complete, but Capcom forced him to put Phenix into the game, stealing the spotlight. You can see the dissent of the writers on this issue through the game vibe, how they were trying to let go of the past, but were torn and afraid to dump Phoenix, the mascot, the cash cow. (Apollo third-wheeling in Kristoph/Phoenix divorce smh 😔) - The entire game was made with the idea of change, a fresh start & fresh blood in mind, and was written specifically in a way to have a sequel... Apollo's character feels incomplete and irrelevant because there was supposed to be a continuation (if Shu Takumi had his way with it) There were things left unanswered for a reason, and the sequel was planned to go more into the Gramarye troupe, Gavin brothers, and Apollo's family. (Shu had an entire Gavin backstory written (!!!) but it was scrapped by the new team 😔) - Irl, almost 7 years passed between games. The new team probably didn't bother to understand the characters in-depth and decided to start fresh. - Correction! The team was FORCED to start fresh, by Capcom, again! With their "no spoiler" policy. Capcom created the restriction to appeal to new fans, while not spoiling previous games so people might be compelled to buy them. (Again, corporate wins over... continuity, this time. The driving appeal behind these games. Lol) -The game delved into darker themes on purpose, like a "grown up" version of Ace attorney for the next generation. It was hoping to shift the tone from the previous three games more towards realism. It (tried to) set Apollo as a more independent lawyer, trusting no one, without any mentor, but that cost him the potential for personal dilemmas. (Kristoph drama took the first stage) Sources: Ace Attorney Wiki, VGfacts, NezumiVA, @AA_Facts on Twitter

Ok so I really feel the need to ask this because it's been bothering me for awhile. Is there actually any proof that the no spoiler policy exists? I ask this because dual destinies and Spirit of Justice somewhat contradict this idea. Dual destinies brings back Edgeworth and Pearl characters new players would very much be confused by without proper knowledge. And spirit of Justice brought back Email Skye and Larry Butz and the second case to the game delves heavily into troupe gramarye something a new player would have zero idea about and even be frankly confused by if they haven't played Apollo Justice.
@megarotom15903 ай бұрын
@@nightmarearcade2663I don’t think that contradicts the no spoiler policy, they’re not continuing arcs with them and while one might not get the full effect seeing them there’s nothing that requires knowing their arcs to enjoy the game
@nightmarearcade26633 ай бұрын
I suppose? But again I bring up the second case of spirit of justice like that's not a case most are gonna get unless they played Apollo justice first. If you ask me it's very likely that they just decided not to bring back older characters and to continue arcs. We gotta remember that Dual destinies and Spirit of Justice didn't have Takumi as a writer so it's not like they'd know what he had planned. I feel like the no spoiler rule was made up by fans due to how they felt about the story of these games. Like I said I can't find any source of where this no spoiler rule idea came from other than what fans have been saying.
@RookLobby3 ай бұрын
@@nightmarearcade2663 Alright so, yes there is proof, but first let me explain an important distinction. When it comes to the no-spoiler policy, an appearance of a character doesn't bring spoilers. When it comes to AJ, despite Ema appearing, you don't exactly know her entire story, about the serial murder she was involved in, and her sister isn't mentioned even once. You just get a quick intro, and move on. It's done that way on purpose, and has a plausible reason of her just growing up, and being a new person. Just because she shows up, doesn't mean you get spoilers, or need to know them to proceed with the game. Pearl, Maya and Larry appearing doesn't spoil their stories or cases in the first three games (Capcom's goldmine of money) and that causes the character depth to decline as a result. Look at it like this - They're simply recognizable characters brought back, new fans wondering where they come from (maybe inclined to play the previous games like Capcom wants) and old fans having fun with the cameos. It's like a brief trailer and a bit of who they are, but to know more, you would have to play the previous entry. The policy was put in place specifically as incentive to buy the previous games. Showing an old character and not making huge connections to their past, or anyone's past, is a marketing tactic of showing you something and not telling you much, hence the "no-spoiler" just by character appearance alone. Notice the differences. During the first trilogy, you can see character development, relationship arcs, and frequent callbacks to previous events/cases across all three games (example: Edgeworth being scared of earthquakes). Prosecutors come back, some witnesses come back. It's more blatant continuity, and it feels right because AA is just that type of game. AJ (an exception) starts things fresh, and the only spoiler we get is this mysterious case 7 years ago in which Phoenix was an "acclaimed lawyer" and we get a flashback case for it, completely isolated from everything we've seen before, easily understood by a first-time player! No cases or characters from the previous trilogy spoil the story (Phoenix, Judge, Gumshoe) directly. Phoenix, despite appearing in the later games, doesn't tell you about Godot or Dahlia, or describing his reasons for being a lawyer at all, and shows a reversion of his previous character growth. We see Miles Edgeworth appear, and new fans might wonder, damn, what's the history??? - and buy the games. Simple as that. Then DD and SoJ come along realizing, hey, the no-spoiler policy is 7 years old. The original trilogy worked BECAUSE of continuity, but we cannot use that, so - We can create a completely new continuity with Athena while still having a no-spoiler connection to the past by bringing some characters back, not delving too deep, just enough to interest the player. They literally create 4 new backstories for Apollo just to avoid his mom. It's one of the main reasons i've stopped caring. The games are simply too different, and it shows. People may buy the four previous games out of curiosity, and encounter characters that used to have impact and more sense. They just wanted to sell more copies for that $$$ 😑 Most of the proof for this policy is an in-company discussion, some of which were saved as interviews. NezumiVA (who did an entire vid on the games) was correct in saying most of these are now only on internet archive (basically deleted) or in Japanese, translated. Producer Motohide Ishido and Shu Takumi's interviews are the most prominent, but since posting links in yt comments can get it deleted, you'll need to read them yourself 😉 It's strongly implied, and even straight up stated, if you read through these. Tbone415 also has some good videos on this topic as well, showing how many themes from AJ were not continued or used beyond it in DD or SoJ, because of Japan's irl legal issues and mixed reviews. Capcom themselves has a history of implementing a strong restriction on reviewing their games with spoilers, even taking some down, because of possible money loss. It's a sensitive topic for them - these guys just took it to the next step after seeing the backlash. Sometimes this entire "no-spoiler" policy is simply referred to as a 'continuity restriction', and many game companies do this, not only Capcom. You can see it pretty clearly tbh, the change from AA1-3, AA4-6 storytelling, character cameos or not.
@nightmarearcade26633 ай бұрын
Ok I thank you for the information here. For the longest time I genuinely felt like fans made it up because of how they disliked the way the 3DS Duology told their stories. So I appreciate that you took the time to explain the actual history of this statement and even showed it was in fact a thing.

My god what a great video. I actually like really very much Spirit of Justice and Apollo Justice (which seems to not be common in the A.A. fanbase), and even tho its definitely disturbing that every single game Apollo comes out having another past in even another entire country that he just casually never mentioned, i can't stop myself from really liking him, specially with the character work done in SoJ. You made me have a better appreciation for his role in Dual Destinies, even if its still REALLY out of nowhere and, tbh, very much absurd that he would immediately flip like he does, specially to phoenix, which, different than both his past mentor and possibly athena, was friends with him for a while. That being said, im happy his character is, mostly, done for while. His ending made sense and, tbh, 3 lawyers was definitely ANNOYING for the writers. You can only be controlling a max of 2 at a time and they had to just keep throwing someone in these sidequests and splitting the plot in 2 which made some parts of the story rushed because you suddenly had to work with 2~1 case to develop this lawyer and its motivations this lawyer instead of 5~4 (specially annoying because the one with more screentime is the only one with a fully developed backstory and an already long-running career). Really hoping for the next AA game after more 32 packages and remakes and reboots and spinoff

Absolutely a great video!! Fun to see how people perceive Apollo's character after the fact now (instead of back in the day as each game came out). I will have to disagree with you on Apollo not having any character in his debut game, but I see this come up a lot so I guess it's just a difference in perception. =7= ;; to me, he's quite defined, but also the point of his debut game is how much everyone is leading him through it, not allowing him his own autonomy. It's the whole theme of the game, even! But, again, I can see how he can be perceived as lacking a defined character. One thing I find very interesting is how his added character in Spirit of Justice plays so well with his character in his debut. So much adds up there! I'm not the biggest fan of what Dual Destinies does to him (I'm forever salty about the decision to just make him act different for shock value), but I do like his and Athena's camaraderie. You're absolutely right about those finales missing their punch due to his lack of participation until those finale!! I do have one burning question, though; where did you get those 3D models of Apollo that fix his weird bent backwards hand issue?? That's one of the pettiest gripes I have with his 3D model, it looks like he broke his wrist when he's crossed them.

I somewhat disagree with the notion that Phoenix is more logically driven and Apollo being more emotionally driven. Rather, I think that Phoenix starts out as being driven by emotions -- quickly internalizing Mia's lesson to believe in his client no matter what -- and then learn to see past his emotions to become a better lawyer. Phoenix has to confront his own emotionalism in order face his childhood best friend edgeworth, had to confront the nuances in Mia's lesson in the final case of the second game against Matt Engarde, only to finally come into his own when he had to overcome the ghost of his ex-girlfriend and ultimately convict the prosecutor who protected Maya. He starts from being an overly emotional college kid with attachment issues (as shown in 3-1) and becomes able to carry all the weights that life throws at him by the end of the third game. Apollo has the opposite arc. He's a fairly detached guy, a lawyer trained to be competent, having to get over himself and against his own instincts from the outset. He doesn't follow his own emotions but rather his own principles. When Phoenix tricks Apollo into convicting his own mentor, Kristoph, with fake evidence, Apollo comes to hate Phoenix's guts, but he manages to push past it anyways because needs must and he desperately needed a job. He has to learn to trust his feelings and instincts, which is what the final case of the 5th game has him do. The only thing that I find unfortunate about Apollo is that he's really not the main character of the game that is literally named after him. The story isn't really about him, he's just along for the ride.

In particularly that "the Development of all three of second trilogy games was extremely troubled and Capcom itself had a major role in that" And "Apollo doesn't really have a character in his debut game" you only really need to compare him to Phoenix or Ryunosuke's first appearances to see that but due to this strange discourse in the fandom there's a group that insists to say otherwise because Takumi or Capcom can't do any wrong.

I would have really liked it if apollo teamed up with Athena and both of their mechanics would be combined and used. imagine having to look at the twitch of a defendant while also connecting to the emotions, that would be interesting. or better yet give Athena her own game and just forget all the past ace attorney games and have more like a reboot. there's so many character that I think the series calls for it, they can have cameos but I just think the cast is so big that no one ever gets developed hence why apollo has been in character development limbo.

It never bothered me that Apollo had little characterisation in AA4. Phoenix also had very weak characterisation in AA1+2, with his assistants (Maya, Ema, and even Maggie Bird for that one case) being more of the focus character. A protagonist who exists to be the filter for the world around them, with some interesting connections, was a fine spot for Apollo to occupy. AA4 also left some very interesting places for Apollo to go, inverting a lot of Phoenix's arc. We never find out about Phoenix's family, but Apollo is full of lost family members. Inversely, Phoenix's arc hinges on a childhood incident with a trio of childhood friends, but Apollo doesn't have friendships outside work. This inversion is part of why Clay is disappointing to me, I think Apollo as a bit of a loner newly introduced to navigating friendships was a fresher angle. I am also a huge AA4 fan, and one who would level a criticism at AA5 of feeling like fanfiction. Its hard to explain without feeling like insult, but I do mean it in a netural but critical way. A lot of fanfiction written in the long gap between AA4 and 5 did serve to flesh out Apollo and expand the story. Some writers believed the franchise to be dead at that point, and were making their own continuations. Not too dissimilar to DD, on a budget and with a different vision. A plot beat shared with many fanfictions and Duel Destinies even, was a darker and edgier plotline for Apollo. I never thought this suited the guy, but I guess I can't argue now. I can't argue now.

Personally, I didn't like his backstory for SoJ :/ and I wish there was more of him to play as. I also would've liked to have seen -Dirt Earthling- Clay Terran at least once before he died.

I mean, they are just separate ace attorney games really. They only called it that later to bundle them together like the original pheonix wright one. I personally think apollo justice as a character is uninteresting.
