I just finished reading Halo: Silent Storm - and the one observation an Elite Ship Master makes during humanity's attack on a Covenant planet is very telling. Master Chief is leading 12 Spartans and damn near an entire battalion of ODSTs called the Black Daggers. (These ODST's were so good, that while training with the Spartans, Sgt Johnson was able to lead them to victory against the Chief and his Spartans on several occasions.) During the operation, every single ODST is killed - but every single Spartan (directly under MC's command) survives. The Elite Ship Master was flabbergasted that Spartans were so superior to ODSTs that his forces couldn't kill a single one.

They were also considered demons due to the fact that in almost every ground engagement they were apart of they inflicted such massive losses, strategic and attrition wise, that the only way to win most planetary engagements where spartans were deployed was to just nuke/glass the planet once air/space superiority was achieved. I don't know about managing to kill a S2 considering there were only 33-35 active S2s by the start of the war. By the events of Reach, approximately 25 were on planet for Op Red Flag, which if we exclude Jorge 052 and the members of Grey and Red teams, only 3-4 S2s would have been actually KIA. Samuel, Cal, Solomon and Arthur. They were called Demons due to the sheer levels of destruction and death they left in their wake combined with the martial prowess. Along with the religious zealous nature of the Covenant to begin with. Also, they look the same aspect can't stand since we have armour variations, which were documented very early on. Nice head canon though.

One of the thing that made ancient Greeks and Romans hide their faces under a mast was because that scares the enemy. Romans added a more level up on drama by making the whole army silent. No sounds, no people that screams, nothing. Germanic tribes was used to scream in order to scary their enemies, but when it came to the Romans... they freak out. They was like ghosts, undead, demons. Like killing was a routine for them, and it was since the Roman army was the first regular and professional army on Earth. Spartans as like every modern army have taken this very concept of discipline for their own. They are silent and deadly efficient. As the Romans was when they left the battle site full of corpses of their enemies.

There is a lot of artistic dramatisation with your comment. While the evidence suggests this was ultimately true, how it's being described here really wasn't the case. They were silent as they gathered in formation on the battlefield in order to hear orders from their officers and signaling horns. It also projects professionalism which particularly affected the germans after the first few conquests (initially the germans were unwavering and charged at them sometimes naked, which terrified the romans). However, the romans were not the "first professional army on Earth". That would likely belong to the Akkadians from over 6 centuries prior iirc but even that could be pushed further back into history with new archaeological research

UNSC also doesnt list them as KIA only MIA. Its for human moral but if the Covenant haked a human system it would also lend to their beliefs, but let's talk about this hypothetical Covenant that saw multiple Spartans die.

Another fun fact is while Spartans are considered demons, ODDTs are considered Imps because while not on the same level as Spartans the ODST were skilled and deadly in their own right

And ODSTs were dropped in fairly large teams on the backlines where they would quickly infiltrate and wreak havoc on covenant held areas.

Could just be an above average Elite officer. You have to refer to Bungie era novels, before Spartans were written into power rangers. Back then your average Spartan III would go toe to toe with a lower ranking elite officer, and a Spartan II in MJOLNIR would be matched by higher ranking elites like a Zealot or a Field Marshall. What made just a thousand Spartans derivate way more value than hundreds of thousands of elites in the war, even though they were roughly evenly matched as individuals, was that the UNSC used those Spartans way more wisely than the Covenant used its elites for the war effort. At least, that's how it was written pre-343.

@@fireblow6842 You can even see that logic somewhat at work in H2 and H3, where you could play as the Arbiter and see the feats of Rtas ("half-jaw") and elites serving under his command. You could see many elites back then performing incredible feats akin to Spartans', even though they haven't been particularly augmented biologically. It just seems that on top of having extremely poor command structure, a culture that neglects the value of individual life by mixing elements of abrahamic zealotry and bushido principles, and incompetent politics involving way too much into the military, the Covenant also had very wide ranges of proficiency in its ranks. One elite could be bad enough to be threatened by a small group of UNSC soldiers, and another elite could kill hundreds of the latter. Even though the elite had a strong ethos of training and martial prowess, it seems their integration into the Covenant may have somewhat damaged it; maybe by making the "laziest" elites more complacent, where they would have been under extreme social pressure if they were under "purely" elite social structures. Basically lowering the floor of what could be socially considered as an acceptable combat proficiency for elites serving in diverse Covenant structures. In two words: corruption and complacency. You know, it's not like humanity in real History hasn't had mind boggling empires fail entire military campaigns for the exact same reasons.

if the elites learn of the spartan IIs background, they would likely be angry. im sure the arbiter knows what the chief looks like in modern halo. im sure they have been in the same room with each other off the battlefield. he doesnt trust oni at all. being responsible for several assassination attempts on his own life, im sure he understands what oni has done to create the spartan IIs. For those who dont know, sangheili customs and traditions do not approve of augmentations or prosthetics of any kind. its why the white elite in 2 and 3, rtas vaduum has missing mandibles. he lost them in combat and even though he can get them replaced, he would rather suffer the consequences of not having them, than replace them with prosthetics and live the rest of his days comfortably. its why jul mdama was banished and punished so harshly. he went out of his way to augment himself. he carelessly shamed his entire family and bloodline for his own desires.

ODSTs are "Imps" for the same basic reason. They're faceless, fairly lethal, and even resemble Spartan IIs. Just, about a foot shorter and 800lbs lighter. (Technically, SIIs resemble ODSTs, rather than the other way around, but oh well.)
