Question: Don't you think that the Design is sitting between two chairs? If you want to do road racing, you might need better handling, sprinting ability etc. = You pick a normal road bike If you want to be super aero and as fast as possible for a TT for example.. = You pick a TT bike Maybe there is a niche area for break away riders? Anyway i respect your bravery to follow through on it!

Chris, I know it was an offhand comment, but I'm glad to hear you say you won't take (sports) gambling sponsorships for the show. I can't stand how it has metastasized across media; it's like people can't enjoy the sport as sport without money on the line now.

I'm happy to see that someone is making a bike to not be so low. Lower isn't always faster, but smaller (body) is always faster. If you can relax, you can do the head tuck, and roll your shoulders inward, and run a longer stem to let that happen. You're now narrower, which is far more helpful than taking your broad shoulder position and just dropping it down 1cm just to look cool. The bike industry is finally realizing this, and also that if you eat carbs while exercising you can go faster. Great show as always fellas. I have no idea how you don't have 250k subs.

I know I didn’t articulate myself very well there. But my issue is not with the design, it’s with the messaging. Deep down people don’t like being told they should choose the “slower” bike. That’s my issue with the endurance category in 2025, not the product, but the way it is discussed.

@@ChrisMillerCycling it's not slower if it allows your optimal position so you can put out more watts and be more efficient on the bike. That very small gain that may or may not be there aero wise for the frame is mostly always overshadowed by the entire package. I agree the marketing is done badly. "endurance' or what should be sold as 'better fitting bikes' is not always slower.
@mustridefaster
@mustridefaster 5 күн бұрын
Hey lads, Here's the real issue with the endurance bike versus race bike in the context you were discussing it. The endurance bike will always be a hard sell because there is no meaningful financial separation. Suppose that the conversation revolved instead around cars. The impracticality of driving a top-end sports car if you aren't racing it is obvious. Everyone wants one but it costs way more than it is worth for the average person. They instead buy a much more practical daily driver that easily goes the speed limit and is much better suited for their day to day needs, plus it is substantially more affordable. In the world of bikes, this separation is non-existent. You have a Ferrari available at the same price you have Toyota Camry. The Camry is far more practical, but if you could have a Ferrari at the same price point, why wouldn't you buy the Ferrari? It is also part of the appeal of cycling in general when you can rock up to the cafe ride on the same (or even nicer) whip than the Pros are racing on. People will sacrifice a lot of comfort to "look good" and feel like they are on the best gear available, especially when there is so little separation in price between top end and their endurance cousins. I think the endurance market is a different bubble than what most of the viewers of this channel live in where most of us are performance driven rather than casual cycling enthusiasts with no interest in going fast.

An athlete that refuses to participate in the sport-washing of human rights abuses in Middle Eastern countries or anywhere else should be commended. No person leads a perfect existence. If that was the standard nothing would ever change regarding injustice around the world. It's better to be imperfect but stand up for something than just shrug and say "well, so long as I own an iPhone I can't speak out about ."

I buy bulk malodextrin, glucose, and fructose. I typically put 30g of each in a bottle. That gives a 2:1 glucose to fructose ratio but isn't as sweet as doing straight glucose:fructose. If you want less sweet you can do more malodextrin and less glucose powder but still keep your overall glucose:fructose ratio where you want it. Some people like a 1:0.8 ratio. If that's where you want to be put 50 grams malodextrin and 40 grams fructose in your bottom. You still end up at 90 grams. Adjust as needed.

I've used the sugar flask a few times of late, most recently with Cadel's Ride. Works extremely well with some solid food to balance it out. I've found for a 250mL flask, 200g sugar / 150mL water is about the limit the water will dissolve the sugar, and a couple of teaspoons of electrolyte mix.

38:29 I don't like the way that gambling sponsors have been taking over, but in this case there's two things that are worth noting, first is that the jersey he's wearing is the leader's jersey from the competition, not necessarily endorsement by his part of the sponsors of the Belgium tour. Second, as bad and damaging as it is, gambling is still a choice to start doing, like smoking and drinking alcohol, while human rights violations by the country you were born in isn't an option. As a pro athlete, when you can raise awareness to a subject, even if it's just an excuse to miss a race, it's good if you do. But athletes shouldn't be expected to tackle every issue within society, because at the end of the day, it's their job on the line.

As it happens I bought a Bianchi Oltre Pro for the London Masters Crit racing - and I very much like it because with 3 spacers stack height I can comfortably ride a more aero position……. But all said it doesn’t stop me getting annihilated in the bunch sprint ! Still have the Wilier Zero SLR for the bankers and accountants btw (too too pretty to part with !) ….… and an unridden titanium Mosaic …. so don’t worry I still very much conform to the cyclist profile you describe so eloquently ! Wishing you both continued success 💪

Chris, heating up sugar on the stovetop is overkill mate. Just use a glass 1 or 2L measuring cup and just cover the sugar with water, then microwave for a minute or less. Add cold water after dissolving. It's quick and easier to pour into those flasks.

What is really cool about toot (been following them for a number of years) is they are completely focused on pushing the envelope. This is something most custom builders do not do (thinking of something like argonaut / bastion). Since they build their product custom in Italy they can make ideas a reality very quickly. I love how this bike has broken through and has the internets collective panties in a bunch. I’m here for it!

I applaud Basso for what they have done with their new endurance bike. More bike brands should distinguish between the race bike and the bike that is more suited to the masses. I am a fan (and rider) of Pinarello, they were onto this a while back with their X line and did not get enough credit for addressing the needs of most riders while still maintaining their racing line.

Good points! Every year since 2003 when Trek dropped the Madone to 'save 8seconds at 40kph' we have seen brands claim the same thing every few years. That means IF what they said was true you would be saving around 80-100w on todays bikes vs that 2004 model Madone if riding side by side with your twin. Anyone who has been using a power meter long enough knows that is impossible to have that much improvement.

Great show again chaps - you’re spoiling us! I’ve got a tarmac sl8 and I’m happy with it but the new Basso SV did peak my interest because I’m not a pro and it’s what the cool kids will be riding 😂 but seriously the increased stack height is a plus as is the overall geometry and I like the idea that it’s not for the pros, as if we’re more important. I feel like this elevates the potential of how good a bike for a consumer can be - without sticking to UCI rules a consumer can ride a bike that’s actually better than what the pros ride. It’s also what I liked about the sworks Aethos aimed at the consumer (under UCI 6.8kg). As for the finishing kit I built my sl8 up myself with 38cm bars, shorter cranks, etc seeing as spesh are behind the curve on that - maybe they’re also behind the curve on bike geometry as well - hence Basso SV and even going further bikes like our man Arne Peters are offering. Love.

I use a well-known North American cycling streaming service based in Texas and a VPN, and I can move from country to country to find wherever they have rights and watch pretty much anything. The shorter reach makes absolute sense for me, it’ll fit me better and is therefore more comfortable which means i can sustain higher efforts for longer. The roads in the UK are crap and the 32mm wheels are ideal. Its italian made and looks beautiful as well in the Black/Silver colourway. I don’t have half a shit of interest in reading aero waffle about what bike is fastest in a lab and I have no interest in a SL8, the basso will be as fast as anything else in the real world of normal riders.

In the US it’s split between Peacock (NBC Universal) and Max. We get pretty good availability for all of the classics and tours, but the timing to watch live is whacky. I watched the whole TDU because on the US East Coast it started at 7 or 8 PM and usually I could watch the whole stage cause the stages weren’t that long. Watching the Tour requires you to get up early to catch the neutral start. Still expensive, though. Those services together cost me $45 or so a month, but I get a lot of other value since Peacock has American football and Max has quality TV

The tire width thing is needed. Now that we're on to the wider wheels with the wider internal width, the tires blow up! My GP5000's in a 30mm on the Reserve 42/49's measure approx 34mm. With the road riding near me being mostly rougher than gravel I need the cush that this provides!

I'm definitely a bigger consumer of pro cycling than Jesse by the sounds and I loved paying under $100 (AUD) for a full year's cycling on GCN+. To me and a few mates it was a golden era. One of the biggest losers from this price increase and consolidation in streaming is the women's races. They already struggle for attention over the mens' ones, but GCN+ carried them all and I watched more than ever on there. Even if it's the long highlights package, it was so easy. It's a handy reminder that pro cycling worth nothing compared to global sports and worth fighting for, even by its small group of fans

How many times do people have to ask about the sugar water? Work it out, its 2 ingredients, one of them is free. Mind boggling science.

I can never remember how much water to use 🤦🏼‍♂️. I've got a 250ml flask so if I want to put 200g of sugar in that how much water do I add when I dissolve it?
@chrisvanbuggenum871
@chrisvanbuggenum871 Күн бұрын
@JW-wl5lm it's up to you, if you want a more viscous product use less water, if your want less viscous use more. Also depends how long you want to ride for, and therefore how much sugar you are going to use.

I think like Chris is touching on it would be interesting to see due to the increased stack / more relaxed geometry of the Basso SV whether this would actually result in amateur riders being faster (against a bike with much more aggressive geometry (with similar spec, weight, gearing etc)) because they have better form on the bike. Does better form i.e more comfortable, composed position pushing through the pedals outweigh the reduced drag from an all out aero frame. I say frame over position because most amateur riders will not try and adopt a low, aero position. Maybe aero isn't the subject at all, it's more to do with riding position and how that effects power transfer. Of course more comfort = being able to hold power for longer.

Hmm, not sure he has the power to hold off the group after the last descent in Cadel’s race - Schmidt is a strong TT rider. Wildlings is ridden a speed- I suspect he’d need a bit more gradient to get proper separation. Admittedly, he has a quick sprint off a climb though so would certainly be in the mix.

I think the thing Jesse still misses with the endurance bike debate is that almost ALL people ride for speed mentally. I am way too weak to race for results but I have entered a few mass start "race" events. But even if you never pin a number on it don't even du any structured training most people are still kind of "training", riding as fast as possible on some way, or trying to improve their speed somehow. And it's just nice to have a pro level equipment doing so. I own an aeroad. Do I need it? No. But it's nice and I don't ride longer than 6 hours and my body tolerates it for that time. It's the sporting equivalent of being able to own an F1 car to go to trackdays. Do you need that? No. But you wouldn't run a road car instead because it's "practical", "comfortable" or "what fits your back". Chris is right that you need to prove it's equivalent in performance

Love all the SL8 talk (lol). As someone who loves NBD, building and tinkering with bikes as much as I love riding them the SL8 has kinda killed it for me. I mean, where do I go from here? It's 1kg heavier than my SL6 weight weenie, it's not as exciting to ride or look at as my Allez Sprint, but it's the fastest and most comfortable of the 3 (IE: almost faultless but somehow boring at the same time).

Cynical? Idiotic. Comparing gambling with imprisonment. For once a pro cyclist actually says something. I have nada to do with the sport nor its governing bodies nor would I ever want to as it is one of the most corrupt sports on par with football/soccer. Sports washing of brutal regimes nonstop. And your immediate answer is, let's look at his jersey, oh!! But gambling!! That's not cynicism, that's ethical bankruptcy.

Why would a company like Uno-X sponsor a cycling team if not for sportswashing? The hypocrisy lies in where you draw the line. Several Eastern European countries have non-existent LGBTQ rights, while multiple Western European nations have elected far-right governments that openly promote anti-feminist and anti-LGBTQ rhetoric. Yet, we have no issues racing there.

Me as a person w/ "short legs" (long torso), have more like the opposite problem. I can't go as low as i want, unless opting for a maybe to small frame and an overly long stem.. so it is hard to 2 versions of a model would be needed? a high stack and a low stack?

The whole endurance bike discussion… the thing you guys miss with amateur/enthusiast cyclists, is that they still want to be as fast as they can be. They suffer and train very spare hour they have, even if that’s 8 hours a week on the pedals rather than 30, to be as fast as they can be. In the same vein with equipment, they want as much as anyone to be as fast as possible. Don’t make the assumption that they don’t care about being as fast as THEY can be, and why this bike will be that for them versus a crazy aero position race bike.

I understand that you take in water separate. But I am curious how much water you use to get the 200g of sugar inside the 250ml flask. Do you happen to know roughly how much water you add so you don't end up with too much volume? That would be super helpful but it is easy enough to use as little water as possible and then fill the rest of the flask up once it's in there
@wudymoo

Pour the water into the flask first and use that as your guide with enough room for the sugar once you mix it in

About the endurance and racing category. I have a basic Defy (105 mech), and want to upgrade the bike. Everybody and their mother, be online, friends, shop clerks... tell me to get the TCR, no doubts. Not due to the geometry, mind you, but because the snappy-ness. That the Defy, with the long wheelbase and chainstays, corners like a truck compared to the TCR, which is much more fun. At 29, normal guy but trying to get more flexible with yoga, am I cornered into the Defy? Tubeless 33mm tyres are not enough?
