This video was almost twice as long as I intended it to be, and I still have so much I wish I could have fit in.....! In Scott Gorden's obituary, over ten years ago now, his family asked for donations to the City of Hope Cancer Center in lieu of flowers, so I'm going to use the pinned comment as an opportunity to re-up that call for donations in his honor

Hey I loved your video but I do have to say the little overreaction over the college age thing, I’m in my 20’s and still haven’t gotten to college, maybe they felt like normal people and wanted at least 1 year where they didn’t have to do anything related to school, and went to college the year after, I have no idea why that wasn’t a possibility you mentioned but I felt like I had to explain. Again love your video and almost no one talks about this movie, especially someone that watched it so much, but I’m glad you did it

My favorite part about this movie is how Max, the protagonist, it's the only normal, level headed, simple, non quirky character ik the movie, and he still stands out because every other character in this is fucking crazy
@julijepp
@julijepp 5 ай бұрын
It's the straight man trope! Not as in orientation but it describes when a composed, pretty "normal" relatable character is the foil or juxtaposition to the rest of the characters, usually eccentric or wacky, so the straight man takes the place of the audience in a way as we acclimate to the world and setting alongside them. Max in Hocus Pocus is arguably a straight man in the story bc he's the new kid in town and finds out magic and witches are real etc... another example is Hank from King of the Hill! Tori from Victorious is an example of it too, but I think this film did it better

What I liked was that Maxes character development was carried on from the first movie. I hate when sequels undo character development because they rather play it safe and rehash what the first did. I liked we could tell that Max had an understanding of how much his Dad loves him while still wanting that independence. In the first movie he had no patience with Goofy, but you can tell he was really trying his best to be understanding of goofy’s situation this time. I liked seeing that maturity carry on from the first

There is a really good scene in the first act of the movie which demonstrates that Goofy and Max’s relationship *has* changed compared to the start of the original Goofy Movie. The night before Max leaves for college, Goofy gives him a present. While unwrapping it, Max’s dialogue makes it clear he thinks it’s going to be a cool, high-tech item… only to open it and find an analog, mechanical calculator. The thing is so hopelessly out of date that Max has to ask his dad what it even is, to which Goofy explains that it’s a family heirloom- he and his dad before him both used it when they went to college. Mac is clearly disappointed, but he does respond with a genuine, “Thanks dad, this means a lot to me.” No sarcasm, no rubbing it in Goofy’s face that he actually thought this ancient hunk of metal would be of any use. He simply accepts what his father was trying to do. That mechanical calculator never comes up again, in some ways it’s a Checkov’s Gun that never fired, but it still serves a great purpose in the film.

I ended up seeing this one first, and it still works. It's a very different story but it lays out everything you need to know about the first movie, Goofy and Max used to be close but now that Max is grown and going to college they've grown apart and while Max is trying to branch out Goofy misses him.

The first scene in this movie, particularly Goofy's horseshoe lecture, is SO CLEVER. The way the horseshoe bounces around and goes crazy before it makes it around the spike (Idk what it's called). It's subtle, but in the scheme of what Goofy is talking about, it really adds to the metaphor he's trying to get across and kinda foreshadows the entire movie.

These movies genuinely make me love goofy because they shaped goofy to simply be a struggling single father with an average teenage son!! Max is the perfect idea of an aging teen as in goof troop he stated he was 11.5 in literally the first episode and we have Seen him grow up!!! Even to this day in ducktales max has stayed aging! With goofy saying that max has been in college as of recently and I love that as a person who literally just ended their first semester and grew up watching these movies and goof troop. I like the way it mirrors the first movie. The first one was all about how Max was growing up and moving into a new phase of his life. In this one, Goofy is doing the same: finishing college to get a better job, finding love, and just starting a new phase of life now that Max is grown and out of the house. The cherry on top is Max watching Goofy and Sylvia driving off into the sunset, smiling and just being happy for his Pops.

What I really like about both movie and sequel is how it knows and acknowledges that children CAN understand real life problems and situations. They live through these things every day of their lives, even if the characters are going through experiences children haven’t gone through yet (like college), they’ve lived through it through their older siblings, their cousins, their parents, other older kids, etc. Kids aren’t stupid, and I’ve always found that companies assume that kids can’t understand and enjoy complex stories while still maintaining the child-like wonder that they posses.
@macmurfy2jka
@macmurfy2jka 4 ай бұрын
Agreed. We may not have understood every part of some scenes, for lack of sharing the experience, but we understood the conciseness. Goofie’s having a romantic date, Max letting go of his anxious embarrassment to enjoy the vibe at the club, how much Bradley is a piece of crap, but ultimately learns to lose with grace while still getting his well earned comeuppance for his real villainy In betrayal, etc. These are all subtle ideas that we as a child could easily catch on to without needing to fully understand the exact context. Heck, as a child I didn’t know what a Frat is or why one might want to join, but as a kid I understood that Max and friends wanted to join a club and what the story told us about them. Truly a good movie.

19 and starting college straight out of highschool without having been held back is quite possible if you live in a state where you are not allowed to start school until you are officially the right age (so 5 for kindergarden) and your birthday falls even a week after the year starts. So for example a December baby doesn't get to go to kindergarten until they are already almost 6.

As a kid I loved TLK2 for the music, but as an adult I love its message against prejudice. The circumstances of Kovu's birth do not define him & the conflict between Simba's pride & the outlanders ends with Kiara telling Simba that he's wrong to treat them differently. It makes a lot of sense that Simba would fear Scar's followers, but they shouldn't have had to suffer for his crimes by the time Kiara was an adult. I think her indepedence & compassion made an impression on me as a child, & so did watching the misplaced hatred almost everyone had for Kovu.

What I think doesn't get talked about enough in a goofy movie and an extremely goofy movie, and I'm glad you pointed it out, is that it's just meant to be fun. These movies don't care about disbelief. They can exaggerate movements, faces, and appearances. It's a cartoon and makes sure you know it. Even animated movies now make everything as realistic as possible, and some are incredible to watch, but movies like this are just straight up fun to watch. Now you have a whole lot of realism to the point disney is now in a live action remake era, and basically all of them are dumpster fire garbage burning the original story as a result. These movies do an incredible job of giving those goofy moments that you can't help but at least smile at, while still hitting on the emotional moments regardless of age.

No because I used to watch this movie on repeat all the time when I was little. I honestly feel bad for my parents who had to watch as their five year old stared blankly at the screen as the silly dog guy cries along in his--now empty--son's bedroom. This movie might've been one of my first looks into the idea of adulthood and may or my not have scarred me to the point where I was terrified to grow up. anywhizzle, at my grandma's house, there was a Wii and one of the applications on the Wii was KZbin and I think I only used it once or twice because it was too difficult for me to figure out how to search and watch what I wanted, but the first thing I had ever looked up to watch was the 'Shake your Groove Thing' scene from this movie. it's super cool that someone //finally// understands and had the same admiration for this film when they were younger lol

i know this is totally unrelated to the actual content of the video but i have to say that part of why im even still watching is that something about your voice is so reassuring. it kind of sounds like mine! my dream job is voice work but im insecure about my voice and i worry that no one would *like* to hear it no matter what i do. i know its just really easy to be overly self critical but im amazed every time examples like this bring me back to reality. your delivery, dictation, tone and pitch all work in your favor and i *want* to listen to it! so much of videos is presentation and your voice over makes this endearing and relatable

This movie is basically a whole season arc of a slice of life show, with absolutely every bit of filler trimmed out. I think thats why it works in spite of its apparent lack of coherence; rather than TV people trying to make a movie and not doing it well, the crew were able to bring in tacit knowledge to this movie that wouldnt transfer to a normal sequel

Shouts out to shorty who directed “Prince of Egypt”. Favorite American animation of all time. You had to see it in theater. The opening, Moses learning of his destiny, the plagues. The Hebrews being freed. The animation and music was most definitely top notch. Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston have an all time great song; the in movie iteration is great as well(different versions). All time great animation and OST. I know it’s non secular to an extent but this is just a great movie through and through.

I mean the concept of college is not to far off for kids to grasp. It's very similar to Magical schools or other fantasy institutions of education. What makes them different is only the subjects being taught. I mean I'm Malaysian and I don't see animated cartoon with America's version of school to be a regular thing for me, but the basic understanding of what school is is there

My answer to Max's age question is that it is a legitimate thing for graduates to take a 'gap year' before college so they can explore their options and get a glimpse of adult life before being thrown into school again. For teens like Max and his friends, it's also like an extended summer vacation.

Imma let you finish but.... *Lion King 1 1/2 is the greatest midquel of all time* (i.e. betwixt pre- and se-). Everything down to BOTH DVD bonus games "Who Wants To Be King Of The Jungle?" and the shockingly immersive *Disney amusement park ride simulation* which has since been devastingly robbed of a real life interpretation and/or VR experience to commemorate it's utter genius.

While Goofy movie represents early nineties with references to pop culture of the time as well as the rebellious attitude kids and teens had back then. Extremely goofy movie is more late nineties with the Xgames and older generations nostalgic for 70s themed things. (Much like how the late 2000s and 2010s had 80s nostalgia and post 2020 is now 90s nostalgia.)

I honestly think the quality in animation may have to do with the fact that the toon Disney branch studio(s) who did the animation for this movie actually shut down and an extremely goofy movie was their last project. So it feels like they wanted to go out with a bang and the end credits kinda make it feel like a celebration/ final horra :')

I loved this movie as a kid. I'd never even seen the first one, honestly. My parents didn't own it for some reason. But we bought this one! And since they raised me on a bunch of 70's music, those scenes were my favorite parts hands down. I wanted a mood ring so badly (still do. I always break them) And every couple of years I give it another re watch and it holds up. So glad you gave it the attention it deserved!!

My favorite part about the Goofy Movie when I was younger was the high school setting. It seemed like a more realistic depiction compared to other shows with its rebellious (yet still innocent) nature and made me really excited for high school. So when I watched the Extremely Goofy Movie when I was a bit older it gave me that same excitement for the future with its "realistic" portrayal of college.

It's been speculated that it was Goofy that forgot the lesson of the first movie instead of Max, while he's not happy his dad's at college, Max is also understanding and reasonable once he hears that Goofy was fired and needs to get his degree, Max also right from the start lays down some ground rules which Goofy agrees to. However Goofy immediately forgets the whole conversation, that he's supposed to be there to get his degree, does his smothering dad thing and it messes with Max's college life, while Max could've given his dad a proper goodbye instead of running right out the door(which fortunately they do get that goodbye hug at the end) but Goofy shouldn't have dragged Max into his empty nest syndrome. Sidenote: i love that they show Goofy can throw down against Bradley when they give him trouble and talk smack about Max(remember when he got straight up pissed when he learned Max changed the map?) Goofy ain't playing.

What a great account of what could have been another straight to video squeak'uel from Uncle Disney. Though my participation on Extremely was much more swift than the original, I'm proud of the way it turned out and I think Doug and team absolutely DID it TO it! Extremely (pun intended) impressed as well at the caliber of animation. They didn't have to go that hard. Kai, love your honest and gleefully wry absorption and near clinical take of this what could have been forgettable flick. Always pleased when folk bring up EGM. Cheers! - Curious as to why you thanked JAMES Marsden tho. ;-)

An Extremely Goofy Movie is one I liked a lot as a kid thanks to how often they ran it on Disney Channel. Despite all the "Xtreme Sports" that felt like pandering to what the kids would think is hip, it manages break through with a fun plot, where the skateboarding feel like a natural interest for the characters. I always kinda felt bad for Goof Troop legacy since I really enjoyed a lot of the episodes when I was younger, but people think of the Goofy family storyline as just these movies. I wish Disney could find a way to elevate Goof Troop's popularity whenever A Goofy Movie comes up in anniversary specials and such since I miss certain things exclusive to the series, like Pete's family.

I was born April 7th 1995, the very same day as A Goofy Movie released. In a way I've always felt a special connection with that fact, but without it I think I feel the same way about these movies. I've always loved Disney animation, rewatched my tapes of Lion King, Peter Pan, and Mulan so many times. Over the years I've become entrenched in the world of voice over and Jason Marsden has one of my favorite voices ever. It's so fun and pure and unique, it's a total joy to hear anything that he's a part of. I'm a big fan of Kingdom Hearts (i feel like "obviously" at this point) which hit me at the perfect age that had this slight childish edge that kept me so connected to Disney characters and Goofy being such a big part of KH I've been left wondering if we'll ever have the pleasure of seeing Max in the franchise. I should get the Ultra Pearlescent Diamond Editions of these Goofy Movies.
