I had a buddy of mine tell me that someone out of Decatur tried swapping the horn out originally with an RS3L. When it was bolted down, it blew so much air pressure that the horn exploded. Thats probably why it has the horn it has on now.
@alcosteam25 күн бұрын
The NS had a traincrew employee stealing horns in and around that area, and it was likely not only on the NS as other railroads saw a prolific spike in theft of horns as well. This guy was selling them and when they figured it all out the police raided his mommies home (yes he was still living with mommie) they found piles of horns. The NS fired the guy but never heard if he was prosecuted or not.. He got his reward though as shortly after while working on a shortline did a stupid stunt and got flung under a moving railcar while switching and become a bi-part dead person.

For the derailment in Nasuha, the track was owned by GUILFORD. That right there is the sole reason for anything bad, rail related, in New England.

It's kinda fitting that the Wabash Unit it the Unlucky one. Toward the end of their life in the late 1960s, the road was bought by the Norfolk & Western and such many lines fell into disrepair. One of these lines is now a shortline with has become famous as the railroad with the "Worst Track in the World". That shortline being the Napoleon Defiance and Western.

Man to think that 1070 was involved in so many incidents. You could say that the locomotive was almost as jinxed as N&W 611
@thunderbird192125 күн бұрын
It is crazy to read about 611's regular service career, and astonishing that only like one of her 1950s accidents resulted in fatalities (though IIRC the driver of a bakery truck she hit at a crossing was badly injured, sadly). On the other hand though, she balanced those misfortunes with some extreme good luck, and not just with her survival. People associated with the Norfolk and Western Historical Society not too long ago found through operating records that 611 was actually tasked with hauling Dwight Eisenhower's presidential campaign train in 1952 (between Columbus, Ohio and Kenova, West Virginia). This means she's one of only several steam locomotives in existence today that is known to have hauled a US president, with one of the few others being Grand Trunk Western 6325 (which famously pulled Harry S. Truman on a rail tour of Michigan in 1948). Absolutely incredible history.

1070 is still in service, so I would argue that a locomotive like Amtrak P42 number 66 was more unlucky. It hit a truck in a crossing accident and got severe enough body damage that it's been written off. Last I checked it was still in a line of disused loco's at the Beech Grove shops along with 156 and 42. Sure 1070 it was involved in a lot of "incidents" but, it sounds like the most that happened to the locomotive itself was the horn getting stolen and replaced. I mean, the Southern Heritage Unit was arguably more unlucky.

When you consider how many times the Wabash or any of the other iterations of it went bankrupt, it’s par for the course for the name. But truthfully, it just had the bad luck of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
@joshthetrainfan27 күн бұрын
I’m not sure if this counts, but the 1070 was supposed to come through Tehachapi in like 2013, but a massive crash at Cable detoured it. Nine years later, it randomly showed up in the yard.
@yeoldeseawitch27 күн бұрын
the first 3 incidents are less unlucky to the engine and more that the engine just cases bad things to happen when its around.
