Watched a wrestling show in Torquay in 1971 as a 15-year old from Sweden. Me an my friends cheered and chanted "NA-GA-SA-KI" repeatedly. We were then asked to be quiet or else leave the venue. THe rest of the crowd had their sympathies for the other wrestler, now long forgotten. 🙂

I remember Mick McManus saying that Kendo's unmasking did Kendo few favours. For years he'd been rumoured to have been deformed and hiding his scars like the Phantom Of The Opera. Or that he was a minor royal - Prince Phillip was a wrestling fan - and had to hide his identity. Unfortunately Peter, apart from the tattoo "was a nice-looking fella...ordinary" said McManus Fortunately, very few people would have had video recorders, or even bothered to tape this if they had, so he soon became a masked "man of mystery" very quickly!

The reason that he Kendo Nagasaki wore the mask because he is a very successful business man

somehow he must have put the mask back on later for matches - because in about 1985 i remember his mask being ripped off again in a tag match - and he then hypnotised the wrestler who did it into attacking his own tag partner.

Virtually the whole of Britain came to a standstill to watch this. I remember it like yesterday.

i saw him at the leamington spa centre ,did the salt thing in the eyes of his opponent ,then all the kids were licking the floor after the match for the "magical kendo salt!"

Was there ever a match between two wrestlers of the same name? The Kendo Nagasaki I remember was the one from Japan. He wore the same garb, wore kabuki makeup, spat out green mist, terrorized the wrestling rings of North America and was managed by James J. Dillion (manager of The Four Horsemen).

Yeah I had to Google Kendo Nagasaki after this because I was confused as hell for a minute thinking " I know the one I grew up watching was a Japanese man that wore the face paint just like The Great Kabuki".

Kendo was so far ahead of the game. The UK scene was always one of the best as far as technical wrestling goes, but sorely lacking in the showmanship aspect. Nagasaki was one of the few UK stars who understood how important the showmanship side of wrestling is. He could have become a global legend if he'd had the backing of a major US promotion.

Funny. Kendo Nagasaki was never the same wrestler twice. Many men wore the kendo mask

ecwfaithful Peter Thornley was Kendo Nagasaki In the UK he retired in 1978 and then made a comeback in 1981 until 1993 when he truly retired.. There were other men who tried to use the name but legal action from peter thornley made sure they changed their name to King Kendo .

@@ForgottenHorrorchannelthere was also ‘Kendo Nagasaki II’ in 1979, but he vanished after a short while, and then around this time the King Kendo gimmick(which still exists today) was born and then Thornley returned in 1981, after 95 he did do some level of part time with various companies until 2005
