That was really fun. Thank you. I met the girl who became my wife in Shetland, in 1974, when I came up from England for the fiddle music. Spent three summers in a row working at Shetland Seafoods, where the Mareel complex is now. One of my abiding memories is of getting thrown out of The Planets along with a Glaswegian friend of mine - in a perverse kind of way, I'm rather proud of that achievement, but I'm a reformed character these days. My wife and I live in Australia now. We came over for a visit in 2012 after we read about Mareel on the internet. I'd forgotten how strong - and constant - the wind is. I remember the Sullom Voe refinery being built, went to see it on our visit, and drove up to Muckle Flugga, first time on Unst. I was in that northernmost shop. Shetland certainly is a special place and long may it be so.

This was very informative and the little jokes made this very amusing to watch. I did not know that Shetland is also known as Hjaltland. I might just use that one from now on. One thing that I noticed is that the sign at 3:57 says Leirvík (Old Norse: Muddy Bay). We, in the Faroe Islands and Iceland, still use these nordic words and, here, "leir" means clay, not mud. I don't know if this is a translation error or the word just got changed throughout history.

Good vid. But don't be lulled into thinking it's all sweetness and light up there. The birds run things. If, like me, you knew that birds flew and made nests then going there will open your eyes to the sheer brutalism that they met out to each other and most of all you, the human. Don't know if it was just because I was wandering around on my own or if they just basically didn't like me but I got a great deal of attention from a Bonxie on Mousa, a Tern on Skaw beach and when ever I came within 800m of an oyster catcher they let me know in no uncertain terms with a call from hell itself. Left me a twitching, paranoid mess, on full alert whenever I saw a tern or skua. They look beautiful but punch very much above their weight. Local guy told me to hold a stick above my head, didn't have any problems after that. Learned alot of things about wildlife in the two weeks there, mainly that oyster catchers are dicks. Will be going back at the earliest opportunity
