I saw the full Russel Wiliams interrogation in another Fifth Estate video. That interrogator did a phenomenal job catching him in a corner and getting a confession out of the guy, it's amazing. No wonder this video is now used to educate more investigators in the art of interrogation.
@phillymichelle83708 жыл бұрын
xen0bia I agree 100%. My dad was a Philadelphia police officer/homicide detective 30 years and he said that taped interrogation should be used in Police Departments everywhere as a training tool for conducting interrogations. The detective who conducted it , however, was not your everyday run-of-the-mill cop. That officer was a specialist in criminal behavior. My dad said that the detectives training in psychology really worked to his benefit. You have to be able to read people in a short amount of time, then decide how to play them. Some suspects such as Russell Williams wasn't gonna go for like the old "good cop, bad cop" technique or to try and back him into a corner. That detective played him just right and was able to use Williams' ego and intelligence against him and while some suspects would just not give a crap about their friends perception of them, Williams' ego, standing in his community and how he was going to be portrayed in the media and by his family and friends was very important to him. That detective knew that about Williams, and was able to use this against him and it is that which ultimately was Williams' undoing. My dad thinks all cops and especially detectives should have some kind of training in psychology or at least criminal psychology to help the officers sharpen their ability to interrogate suspects, which will most likely make them a better detective and a more effective interviewer.
@lornaginetteharrison4148 жыл бұрын
I totally concur. The detective is awesome, as are the rest of the team (criminal profilers & interrogation experts) who helped devise a plan specifically tailored for Russell Williams. I've also seen other documentaries about this case, including the whole interrogation room interview. I hope this doesn't make me sound TOO weird (although as you're also watching this video, I'm guessing I'm amongst the similarly afflicted!), but even though I've seen it before, I still find it fascinating to re-watch the full police interview. It's an absolutely flawless masterclass in interrogation technique. I believe it is used by law enforcement agencies world wide for training purposes, not just in Canada.
@fembot5218 жыл бұрын
Peter Beedle he worked extensively with the forensic behavioural unit of the police to come up with an interview "plan". It was well thought out and executed! They knew Williams was their guy a couple of days before they brought him in so they prepared. I think the calmness of Smyth was integral to this thing. Imagine Russell saying "call me Russ please". It is insane how that played out!

But what I learned has been invaluable for literally decades now, and the Fifth Estate and other CBC shows have become a staple of my media consumption. Plus, like you, I've been able to amaze Canadian friends! 😉 There's a very large Canadian emigree population where I currently live in the US, and I'm happy to say my knowledge & interest in Canada has led to numerous lasting & valued friendships! (Also, FWIW, Australia is at the very top of my bucket list! I've wanted to visit there as long as I can remember. I've only briefly been in the southern hemisphere once, but my absolute dream is to spend several months in Australia/NZ at some point. I'd love SO much to experience Christmas & New Years during summer, see Uluru at sunset, dive the barrier reef, camp under unfamiliar stars in the outback wilderness, catch a barramundi, see kangaroos, dingoes & koalas in the wild...the list is basically endless! In fact, about the only things I *don't* want to do are to confront a funnelweb, a blue-ringed octopus, a saltwater croc or a box jellyfish! 😱 Cheers to you and best wishes from the USA!)

I was living in St Catharines when Karla was released from prison. I’m fact the church where they abducted Kristen French was a block away from my apartment. People were understandably terrified and our Premiere came to St Catharines in an attempt to calm fears. That sociopathic murderer was released and all the stipulations put forth to monitor her movements were disbanded after only a few weeks. That monster could move next door and be around our most vulnerable. I was 21hrs old and truly terrified for the first time in my life. She should continue to rot in prison with Bernardo. That level of evil cannot be cured. She should be whipped off the earth. I’m horrified to learn that this woman has been allowed to have children without life-long supervision. The parental bond is the hardest bond to break. I watch quite a bit of true crime documentaries and have seen my share of parents who couldn't walk away from their son or daughter even though they had killed a sibling or grandchild. I don't fault them for still loving their child. Loving a family member who did heinous things does not mean one approves of their actions. I only take issue if the parents are still holding to the narrative that Karla was herself a victim. I empathize with the position they are in emotionally as parents of both siblings, but I can't give a pass for supporting Karla in promoting such an obvious lie because that would show no honor toward the memory of their murdered daughter. In most of the other stories I've watched about sibling murder, the parents supported their incarcerated child but did not make excuses for their actions and even admitted they deserved to be imprisoned. One mother even had to admit her son was still dangerous and would never allow him near her youngest child.

Yep! Her lawyer's brother, from what I've read. So apparently being a disgusting, callous, gullible disgrace to humanity runs in that family? And yes- I also feel *such* tremendous pity for those poor children! As if she hadn't already made clear just how unspeakably callous & selfish she was, it's mind-blowing to know that she was selfish enough to *deliberately* bring multiple children into the world...despite knowing full well the harassment, public rage, media coverage, constant upheaval & confusion they'd have to endure! Selfish, selfish, selfish!! I only hope that those poor, innocent kids are treated with compassion by the media & public, and not saddled with their disgusting mother's crimes.

He was also fined $8200 for each of the 82 offenses, but refused to pay, so it went to a collection agency. He’s eligible for parole in 25 years, as you stated, but is unlikely to be released; when asked if he thought he would reoffend, he said he couldn’t answer that.

Every time I see Jim Smyth I marvel at his ability. He is not a perfect interrogator, such a person doesn't exist. But if you have studied interrogation techniques, you'll know that Smyth has largely eschewed elements of the Reid technique, which, while some consider it outmoded, is still relied upon by several agencies. Smyth never moved to phase three. He didn't have to. The physical evidence is damning. No escape from boot prints and tyre tracks. As soon as Williams saw the impression match, he knew his goose was cooked. And Smyth then uses a line straight from John Reid's text book: I'm sure you don't want the cold-blooded psychopath option. That's about as close to phase three of Reid as he gets.
@NxDoyle8 жыл бұрын
robert sullivan I'm not saying he's god. He did great work. No Reid technique at all. No flipping back and forth and long breaks. None of it. A foot impression is the best evidence, in your view? I'm also aware that Smyth has had some issues using the Reid technique. When he plays bad cop he can get a little sloppy, apparently. My comment related specifically to this interrogation.
