@@B0X666 the concept of a Mary Sue may not have been as fleshed as it is today, but Ripley def carries shades of it- she survives and excels where a squadron of hardened marines miserably failed. This doesn’t make the film bad- tropes are an inevitable part of most fiction, but it’s important to recognize them so we can understand why they work in some cases while falling flat in others.

Arnold was perfectly cast, and I can't imagine anyone else leading this movie. But for a second I just have to acknowledge the one who is really the technically the best actor of the bunch, Bill Duke. His touching soliloquy over Jesse Ventura's body was good. No one else in the cast would have made that so natural and heartfelt. His character's descent into mania was so well acted, every scene he was in he just stole it and ran away with it.

Yeah, and it really helps if you don't have an actor like "The Rock" Johnson, who makes sure that all the other actors have been waiting for a half hour for him to come out of his trailer so that work can begin. This is the reason why Vin Diesel doesn't like him, he let him know it, and Rock didn't appreciate it.

@@brk2507 Better movies? I think not. They're both fun movies but hardly his best. Arnold is best when he has great directors around to push him. Milius, McTiernan, Cameron, Verhoeven. The movies they directed really showed what Arnold could do. Even Arnold himself wasn't completely satisfied with The Running Man. The original director, who has directed great movies, was fired and Paul Glaser, whose claim to fame was playing Starsky in Starsky & Hutch, was brought on. Arnold himself believes it hurt the film.

@Tom Geldon I'm likely a "youngster' to you. I'm 31. I'm not surprised that someone like you would chose to see a decade of the past as a high point... and perhaps it was for you. My cold war comment was more to the OP who said it was the peak of humanity in general. As for you, there is no doubt nothing I could say would change your perspective on your past. However I believe humans haven't changed much, not only in the last decade but in the last few centuries. Only our tech, access to communication, etc etc. People are generally just as terrible or great as they've always been. 80's weren't so special
@Andytlp
@Andytlp 4 жыл бұрын
@jaybee corbell mkll Maybe in america it was the case but here in eu, born in the 90's most countries were just recovering from cold war tensions and soviet occupations. Things didn't get good until 2000's and even then it was boring as hell. Very few attractions aside from boring beach tanning (as relaxing as that is) or death trap amusement parks built in the 60's. Things really picked up by mid 2000's and imo living standards reached and surpassed u.s by 2010. For us its the other way around. 80's is your jam while the 80's were shit for us so technically we're both right. As for generational differences and who is at fault. Youth today is sharp but lazy. Education shifted to creating more drones than self reliant individuals. Most people are not willing to do more. Same thing in u.s it seems. All present problems are past generations fault and the life grind difficulty increased so much that people cant even be bothered to fix anything. All while older generation is lecturing us about things from the safety of their paid off homes and secure retirements lol. Housing prices are 10x while wages only increased by 3x. Cities are a mess and small towns are worse. Things have gotten better in some ways and others its been nothing but down hill. Cynicism is more important these days because times are changing for the worse.

I think Arnold would say the peak was in twins when a young Kelly Preston seduces him. Watching that was the best day of my teenage life.

I watched this movie as a young kid at the movie theater growing up and it changed my whole out look on the action movies of that generation. One of my all time favourites...

Arnold has always been the last action hero 💪!!!! There will be no one bigger than him ever !!! Just a great guy. Predator , Commando, terminator , remember Every man should either write his story or get in front of the camera to be remembered by all. 80’s in one word !!!! EPIC

Like the fact he didn’t go back and hang out in the trailer like a moody diva, hung out with the crew.

I didn't see this film until it came out on video. I came in after the opening space scene, so I had no idea there was a sci-fi aspect. Just assumed it another Commando-style movie, except with multiple commandos this time. When the movie started kicking into high gear, I sat there dumbfounded and immersed like crazy. Absolute classic, and only Arnold could lead it. Tailor-made perfection.

Arnie has and will always be a legend, despite all the criticism he gets for his limited range he never ever fails to entertain and can do comedy so well, his action comedies are some of the only genuinely funny and entertaining action pictures out there.
