As someone who has been a runner for as much time as I've been a hiker, I think people have it backwards on "you're missing the beauty of the trail." Instead of looking at it like you're running right past the beauty, I see it as, I could be running on a boring road, or I could be running somewhere beautiful, dynamic, and challenging. Also, it's not that weird to do something exclusively for the challenge. That's basically as much part of human experience as seeing beauty in nature.

"wanna hang for a bit? I have deer jerky, shot it myself" absolutely the most Pennsylvania thing I've ever heard. love it.

FKTerrrrs! You should reach out to "Sammertime Saunters" (Sam Holcomb). He set the FKT for the NC MST self supported style in October. His story is very interesting- burried food stashes and stealth camping type story

I think terminology for ultras is your call. It takes a lot of hard work and at the risk of being cliché, “you do you”! Each of us is different and I don’t know why people feel the need to judge others by their own yard stick. Good luck for your Northbound soon!

I just wonder sometimes are these people even human!!! Hiking the AT is a once and a lifetime experience for most and this dude is going running it for the 5th time..,INSANE!!! But I love people like this because you can glean from their motivation!!! Plus I just watched a video of yours the other night from a few years ago that you was talking about everything that went into producing a podcast..,it blesses me to see that all that hard work is paying off for you. I've learned a lot from your videos over the past two years.

Good job man great interview I agree that in some ways trail running almost needs a different name since about 95 percent of Trail runners hike the uphills and to the point of people saying if you move too fast you don't see anything I think they are being a little bit presumptuous as though going 4 mph your eyes don't work all of a sudden

Great interview Kyle. I really enjoyed this interview and your guest was really cool, much respect. He is a complete bad ass. I think everyone is moving at different speeds and I don’t think he is not enjoying the trail any less than someone going much slower. Last year the trail was a real slog. Endless rain and mud. For me the mud did not end until October. I hope he gets better weather this coming year and he breaks the record. Good luck and thanks for such a wonderful interview. Take care

Love this interview! FKT’rs are awesome driven people and I just don’t know how they do it. But I can tell it’s really a self driven goal. But what I want to know is if he’s ever done the Barkley, and if not if he’s interested in doing it. For others it’s a gnarly race that’s all self maned and has a trail that’s not known. There’s a lot of good documentary’s on KZbin. If ultramarathon interests you, you should look it up!

The Barkley is super fascinating. I'd be curious if he would try it as well

The debate about speed is there in bikepacking and cycle touring also.

OK so out of that I got a new definition for someone who hikes at an insane pace over 16 hours a day till the drop: Endurance Hiking. I personally fast pack. because it keeps me fixed in the moment with each step . I get to see more trail and have to pay close attention to the trail and terrain to manage fatigue and avoid injury. If I hike the usual 3-4km/h I tend to day dream a lot and may as well be a mindless Zombie shuffling along on the trail.

What he does is a great illustration of the human spirit. However, if he doesn't like the terms used to describe it, remind him he says "tramily." 😄

People take scenic drives and cars go much faster than hikers or runners. I don’t think the speed is what keeps a person from enjoying an experience.
