Interesting concept. Thru my glasses of life. There are 2 basic types of people:. . . . 1. Sheep=basically they do whatever they're told. And believe if they are told, this is the rule, they bow and comply. They're rights are defined by others.. 2. Free range. They question the authority of the rule setter. They make their own decisions. They have a value system of right and wrong. If they determine a law or rule makes no sense, is wrong or if whoever set a rule does not have the authority from their perspective, the rule has no power. With that said, I'm free ranged. That lady, nor the airline does not have any authority of window shades, recliners or anything else that lady said. I will be tactful and courteous while being assertive.

If airlines want passengers to behave better on planes, they should give some thought to these issues that create conflict between passengers. They make the space too small for most people, then make you pay extra for every extra bit of space, then people get mad at you for trying to use the available space and the extra space you paid extra for. They’re creating an adverse environment right off the top.

You can also turn your head to look outside and pretend youre alone and have a wall to lean on if youre really tired LOL. Only BIG down side is if you gotta go potty, asile seat wins in this department, no hopping over anyone, total freedom to move. Middle seat is sorta like purgatory, cant wait to get outta there.

Interesting how cultural rules also affect etiquette. Regarding reclining your seat, in Japan, it’s typical where people will ask the person behind them if it’s OK to recline. I wish the rest of the world had that type of etiquette. Just being nice to the other person and asking for something to someone goes a long way.
@roenin
@roenin Жыл бұрын
You need to understand the difference between individualist and collectivist societies. Asians such as Japanese will ask before reclining because he or she wants to alert the one behind whereas in a western society this polite gesture would easily be misunderstood as asking for permission and therefore open the whole ordeal up for an awkward situation quickly. Hence why there are a myriad of unspoken rules in Asian cultures and why everybody in westernern culture acts like they are the center of the universe.

You can ask the person in the window seat to close the window, but I don’t get to fly often and one of the only pleasures to offset all the inconvenience, expense and discomfort is looking out the window. So I’m probably going to have it open if I’m in the window seat. If you have a problem with that, get a window seat to begin with.

The only thing that gets me through a long flight is trying to sleep through it - which can be mighty difficult if I'm getting blasted in the face with the sun because the guy in the window seat refuses to close the window. I get it when we're taking off and landing or if there is something interesting to look at - go right ahead, the view can be stunning. But when we're cruising at 35,000 feet and the only thing to see is clouds in every direction and the sun is blasting through the window - maybe shut it for a bit.

If someone really needs to look out at the clouds to stay calm while flying, they can just say that if I ask to close the window so I can have a comfortable nap and I'll accept that - I'm not going to insist my ability to nap is more important. Just be willing to have a conversation about it, and be reasonable about it - it's not reasonable to just say "I sit in the window seat - I decide and I don't care what anybody else wants end of discussion".

The whole not reclining on short flights doesn’t always make sense. Sometimes that’s just one flight out of a long journey you’re taking. If I’m on a long flight day and trying to sleep I will recline, even on a short flight. I understand for tall people behind this can be uncomfortable, but I find it uncomfortable not to recline. Everyone paid for their seats and should be able to use them as they please. If you need more leg room book early and get the right seats for that. I pay for premium access with my preferred airline so I can board early because I travel with camera gear and can’t have it checked. I think ahead and pay for the preferences I want. If the seat can recline then you are permitted to recline, that’s it, no further discussion. In the window seat you have some control of the shade, but not total control. Any seat other than window can definitely request the shade only slightly down in the case of direct sun. The window seat person has the fuselage of the plane around the window to be shielded from the sun while the others dont. For example, a north to south route, the sun will be on the right side/east of the plane in the morning. That glare would be directly in your middle/outer seat positions. If you're requesting it closed because it's just "too bright" and not a direct beam of sun, then I think you do not have a right to inform window seat to pull shade down as it obstructs the window view.

I always chose the window seats when I was younger because I loved to just look outside during takeoff and landing, take some pics/vids etc. Now I just prefer aisle seats because of the same reasons as she mentioned. I also usually board at the very end so having more freedom to move without a hassle (and ask for stuff from FAs) and be the first of your row to exit after landing is just better imo.

I have lower back problems. If I sit upright for an entire flight, it hurts. I recline as soon as it is ok to do so. Any big person who is flying coach is fully aware and accepts that they’re going to be cramped.

Worst situation I had was center seat and both left and right seat passengers were big and squashing me. And I'm small.

Had the same thing happen to me and I jammed that armrest down. I might have hurt him. I didn't care because he was 5 in over into my seat. And then he spread his legs so his one leg was a good 6 in into my leg space and I calmly told him to please move his leg because I needed to put it there. When he didn't I "accidentally" kicked him by crossing my left leg over the right and smacking them in the shin.

I am by no means petit. Nearly every time I fly, a person sitting next to me is the largest person on the plane - in girth.

Reclined seats pin the passengers behind in their seats; they can't even get up to go to the restroom.

Excuse me. If they are not airline rules that I implicitly signed up to when I bought my ticket, then there are no unwritten rules that I must comply with. That does not mean I might not be courteous, but don't demand it.

The middle seat can't tell the window seat to put the shade up or down, but me as a flight attendant can and WILL tell you to put that shade up or down and if you don't, I'll do it for you. Remember that we the flight attendants control what goes on in the passenger cabin, and you will do as you're told because I don't have one issue with removing you off the airplane.

I avoid middle seat and almost never get it because usually you will just be cramped and no room to stretch or lay your arms which hurts your back during the flight. I am small but have broad shoulders and sitting next to men, someone big, or even a smaller female the space is very limited Also I don’t mind closing the window for someone else, especially if they are watching something, I’m hyper aware of those around me I can tell many times if they want it lowered or up to see out, and I will adjust it I also always recline because it’s uncomfortable otherwise and I notice it immediately and start cramping or have pain otherwise Also please don’t put your feet on the rest of the person in front of you, the amount of times I’ve looked to the window to see someone’s gross stinky feet is too many

Everything agree. Except recline, you don't recline ever! Unless you are in business or first class, because, these seats reclining wont affect others.
