The problem with one country occupying another, is that if the occupier treats his own citizens badly, the people being occupied are treated just as badly. I was struck by a post in a services forum from a former British POW of the Japanese in WW2, who later served in Kenya. He said that the maltreatment from his captors was as nothing compared to the routine brutality and torture by the British Army in the counter insurgency against the Mau Mau.
