But many former colonies still use the governing infrastructure left behind because it was fit for purpose. The empire had two faces. The corporate face which was exploitative and acquisitive. And a benevolent face that brought order and trade and the foundations on which an ordered civilisation could be built.

I was struck by a post in a services forum from a former British POW of the Japanese in WW2, who later served in Kenya. He said that the maltreatment from his captors was as nothing compared to the routine brutality and torture by the British Army in the counter insurgency against the Mau Mau. Britain also had its own equivalent of Devil's Island to deal with supporters of independence in India - the hellish penal colony in the Andurman Islands.
