Evgeni Malkin is widely regarded as one of the most talented and accomplished players of this generation. But what most people don’t know is that we were very close to never seeing Malkin play in the NHL.

I'll forever see Malkin as Crosby's right hand man... Like Toews and Kane were for years

Similar to Jagr to Lemieux. 4 of the greatest played for the pens. It’s absolutely insane to be a lifetime pens fan tbh

Very interesting video. I had no idea there was so much drama with Malkin and Russia. I remember the controversy when Malkin was left off the NHL’s “Top 100 Players of All Time” list. Iginla and Thornton were two other notables who didn’t make the cut.

It surprisingly happens a lot. Read about the Russian 5.

@@HecticHockeyAGREED! There's a whole documentary about them, literally just called "The Russian Five." There's another great documentary called "Red Army" about the Soviet hockey team's dominance over the sport. I highly recommend any hockey fan to watch these.

Malkin has also said he is not political. He even became an American Citizen. The very opposite of Ovi.

i remember during this time i think malkin even saved a young girls life. he transferred money back to the family so the girl could get an operation and the operation was successful. could be wrong but i remember that.

@@HecticHockey I believe there is a book and documentary on it already. Think it would make for an exciting movie too.

It’s outright madness to think that if the Caps had picked Gino first both teams probably would have more championships, but it’s true… Angry Gino is score Go Pens 🐧

Great player indeed, but he supports Russia and especially Putin. He escaped Russia, the same system that claims his life belongs to government. Thus, Malkin supports the system that he is victim of. He got out of there, so it doesn't matter to him that others have to suffer Russian totalitarianism. It's sad to see this level cognitive dissonance.
@nersharific81310 ай бұрын
I suspect that Malkin, and his family would face retribution from Putin, were he to speak out against Russia, given how high profile of a Russian player that he is. Ovechkin probably faces a similar dilema.

His parents still live in Russia, Putin would likely make ther life hell, or even worse if Malkin spoke out against him. I bet Malkin stays in the U.S. when he retires despite speaking good English. He is loved in U.S as much as Russia, so idk maybe he goes back, but I doubt it.
