Man, I remember that 06’ cup run. I was eight years old and it was the year that got me into hockey. I was so sad to see Rolly the Goalie (as we called him in my house) get injured as even at 8 years old I knew that it was pretty much a death sentence for the Oilers cup chances. I remember sitting in front of the TV, eyes glued, during Game 7, only to have my heart broken by Cam Ward. After that it was so many years of watching the Oilers lose, but I have never wavered in my support for the team. Let’s go get that cup that eight year old me wanted Edmonton!

Allowed to stay up late and watch the oilers games. “How often will this happen?” Was my dads thought… turns out it didn’t happen again for 18 years. I also suffered through that dark decade, I went to a playoff game in 2017 (first year back) and it was electric. Most insane game I’ve ever been to was one of the battle of Alberta playoff games in 2022. Hopefully, this is our year

NHL RULE: When a penalty shot is awarded because an opposing player closed his hand on the puck in the blue paint:: ONLY players on the ice during the infraction can take the penalty shot. Oilers had 4th line on the ice when that happened. That's why Pronger took the shot. You cant use any player from the bench.

The Edmonton Oilers not only missed the playoffs for the next 10 years. They were the first team in league history to make the finals and miss the playoffs the next year... I still rock my Roli jersey every Oilers game I attend. I despise “what ifs” and excuses. Not to mention Jussi Markanen filled in and carried us to a game 7. But Roloson was so white hot that postseason, it’s literally impossible to imagine us losing with him in net. You truly felt the team was unbeatable with him. He almost got Tampa to the finals in 2011 at 40-41 years old. He was just such a workhorse and he could get so clutch.

@@CastleBrookKrew Ty had a rough year that year but if you look at the play, that was more Jason Smith’s botch. I don't know. I'm a Vancouver fan but I affectionately remember watching Edmonton in the playoffs when Van wasn't in it. That was the Doug Weight, Bill Guerin, Curtis Joseph, young Ryan Smyth era. Between Gretzky and the era you're talking about. They always seemed to be the underdogs in the first round but somehow found a way to win. Of course they never won a cup but they were fun to watch. So it seems insulting to say there was nothing between those 80s cup winners and the 2006 team.

The Oilers' run is one of the most successful examples of the "dramatic mid series goaltending change". This is when a team calls a presser to "move on" from the reigning starting goaltender and go with a backup who is almost always completely unheralded and they carry said team all the way to the cup final on their back. This has happened a good half dozen times since the practice began in 2002 most recently Vegas last year.

The downturn following the Gretzky era was not only due to poor drafting and development. The bigger factor was the imbalance between the US and Canadian markets. Any players that did develop well would eventually get traded or would sign elsewhere (bigger markets) because the Oilers could not afford them. This overall situation in smaller Canadian markets is what would lead to the salary cap which allowed for the acquisition of Pronger which would not have been possible in the pre-cap era.

Rollie the Goalie was insanely good... but so was Cam Ward. The Oil _might_ have been able to make some magic happen if Rollie hadn't gotten hurt but it might not have been enough. And honestly, Conklin didn't do badly, he was just outclassed.

Im glad you threw in the patrick roy comment of taking over the league cuz he did. Went to colorado, 6 conference finals in 7 years. 2 cups and another conn smythe most playoff mvps of all time. Roy and the avs ran the league then. You had to create super teams to beat them.

But remember what they gave up to get Pronger for one reason and one run that didn't get them a cup... So i'd say they lost out in the trade based on what they wanted to acheive as a team... Pronger did win with a great team before them for the Ducks in '07 but one person won't change around a franchise fate it's a collective effort from the top down and championships are won in the war room before the players hit the ice...

The correct term is champing at the bit, not chomping. As a verb, to champ means to bite or grind your teeth impatiently. To chomp means to chew food noisily.

The Oilers didn't win four of their next five games after beating Detroit. They went down 2-0 to San Jose after two 2-1 losses; then won seven straight against the Sharks and Ducks.
