The ceo ran this company into the ground, the Teamsters have been giving this place wage and pension concessions for over 10 years. These guys have been the lowest paid LTL drivers because of these concessions.
@guyinatruck Жыл бұрын
I wonder how exactly he did that because to my knowledge he wasn’t out there buying huge private jets or anything. I think the drivers were paid really well last I checked the local USF Holland drivers were being paid $30/hr starting out. I do think giving the concessions should have helped but them blocking Yellow from proceeding to restructure put the company in a tough spot, scaring away customers and losing accounts. Yellow should have raised rates to customers instead of trying to be the cheapest LTL carrier.

Was a teamster for 11 years. Local 705 out of Chicago.. Unions work when people work. The Teamsters ran yellow into the ground! Truly sad. Unions have no place in the trucking industry.. hours are too long and teamsters are too entitled.

I mean that’s coming from a former teamster so that holds weight to me!
@KharonFL353 Жыл бұрын
The restructuring was the excuse for their awful business practices. Employees voted twice to take pay cuts in order to save the company money on payroll, Yellow claimed they saved 300 million dollars a year on the wage concessions. The union approved these wage decreases twice and members approved them. It wasn’t the union shutting them down, it was their mismanagement of their business. No restructuring could have saved them if a 700 million dollar loan from the federal government only two years ago didn’t help.

Did you just recently get let go due to the closure? Do you know what those changes were that were against your teamster union? Well if the Union was willing to renegotiate the existing contract and Yellow refused then they are to blame no doubt.

I was a linehaul driver with Yellow for eight years and I saw this coming. At this point I'm just thankful I got my last two paychecks and they didn't screw me on that. The day after Yellow ceased operations I got hired on with another company. You just never know what this trucking industry will throw at you. Life goes on.

Wow you did 8 yrs with them? Do you get a pension still? That’s so true, trucking is very volatile. I just didn’t expect this from a 100 yr old company even knowing they’ve been in trouble for awhile.

@guyinatruck Yellow members who qualify for a benefit will still be entitled to a pension at the same level of benefits that Yellow participated in the Pension Fund and will not be affected by Yellow ceasing operations. At least that's what they're saying. I'll be contacting the Pension department on Monday to see what little I may qualify for, but after only 8 measly years I won't be losing any sleep over it.

Dude you don’t know what you are talking about the Teamsters tried and give up a lot all the members did but you can only give up so much too a company and then your not getting what you are worth.Don’t blame the Teamsters Union,it’s the CEO and all the debt they incurred by buying all those other trucking companies they still owned 1.5 billion and we’re only making 25 million in profit and a company that size can’t operate with that little profit so it’s not the Teamsters fault at all
@guyinatruck Жыл бұрын
I think you are right, buying those other companies while still being the cheapest LTL rate was not a good idea. I did see that the teamsters gave back millions in concessions through pay/benefit cuts which I could understand like how much more can we give before we are in poverty. But if you think about it, ultimately if the Union would’ve not blocked the “One Yellow” plan or whatever it was, to restructure the company and remain competitive then they probably wouldn’t have lost a bunch of customers to competitors and the strike probably would’ve been more fruitful. I think with the plan, losing some jobs is less harmful than 30,000 jobs.
@garymichalski5197 Жыл бұрын
You only saw what was in the new the past few months. It has been a miss managed for several years now. Some of the restructuring they wanted to do was eliminating jobs. Like putting line haul runs on 3rd party trucking companies. Driver's gave them money several years ago to help the company. That never got it back and yet wanted more from the Driver's. They spent money change the name to YRC for a few years then back to Yellow again wasting more money. 10:26

I’ve been watching them for awhile now as I actually was looking at driving for them back in 2015 before I started my company. At least not all of them would be lost 😞

I new they would do it again, just hoping they would stay long enough to retire. My problem is I am 61 . Too old but not old enough. Management DID THIS. Everyone gave in wages and they still couldn't make it. They,upper management squandered money on themselves time and again. I do feel for the others lower Management and drivers. I wondered what exactly Yellow was doing so wrong, was it just trying to be the cheapest in the industry and they simply couldn’t operate with the low margins, was there massive spending going on within management.

Hi, I just came across this. I'm a former Holland driver.. I think their is blame to go around. The company was managed poorly and I saw it first hand. 26 years of my life, and I have to start over. It's been difficult depressing at times. I have applied to LTL carriers with no success. I'm not sure if the union members were able to do anything we were never able to vote on anything it happened so quickly there are people who worked at yellow who are upset with the company and the union it was a toxic work environment for a long time. In a way, I'm ready to start over, just hoping I can find employment soon

I was with Yellow when doors closed. Started with Roadway in 95. Yellow took a 1.2 billion dollar loan to buy RW in 03 and another 1.4 billion dollar loan to buy US Reddyway in 05. 09 Yellow was talking about bankruptcy so the union gave company concessions to stay open. 15 % pay cut, 1 week paid vacation gone, and stopped contributing into the pension fund and CEOs were still getting raises and bonuses. 2020 700 million dollar loan from the US government. Management is to blame.

@Guy in a Truck, Idk the story of the "Yellow Trucking Company" but generally unions form because employees "sign cards" expressing an interest in forming a union and normally they do this because enough people believe that there are "problems/abuses" within the company. So the purpose of the union is "supposed" to be protecting employee rights against abuse/discrimination and fight for improved working conditions and benefits. They also help to prevent employees from being unjustly fired/get employees back to work when fired "unjustly"... And unless something has changed, even though unions do collect "dues", union representatives are "supposed" to also represent employees even if they are not paying "dues". Idk how the "Teamsters" operate although I've heard of "shady" even "violent/threatening" tactics used by some in the past. I only know this is how unions are supposed to basically work and that is for the rights and safety of employees. It's not to suggest that there is no corruption within unions because anywhere there are humans and money/power to be made/weilded, you can expect the potential for corruption. As much as we love "businesses" because "business is the backbone of the economy" and that's why businesses/business investment generally receives highly favorable tax treatments, we know they can also be immensely abusive and greedy even to the point of people being maimed or dying... We've seen over the decades the numbers of businesses fleeing the country for "cheap labor" whilst putting Americans out of work and that is also due to the politicians their lobbyists are paying off to ensure they can do it. There have been countless Americans from the textiles industry who actually gave up their jobs to foreign workers because they said "Man they're gonna pay me BIG to go train in Mexico and..." whilst others told them "You dummy they're just paying you temporarily to train someone else to take your job..." And that's exactly what happened. And it wasn't just textiles, I remember when Dell computer "wasted" MILLIONS building a "new, state of the art computer manufacturing facility" which was ALSO SUBSIDIZED by net-contributing taxpayers through MILLIONS in "tax incentives to the business for opening the facility" - which is basically what has been happening for decades "Local politicians using taxpayer money to PAY A BUSINESS to 'give these same taxpayers a job''"... I mean how sickening is that, that for a net-contributing taxpayer to have money taken from them by the gov't, that money then given to a business JUST for the privilege of that company offering to hire you... Anyway, that Dell plant suddenly shuts down after about 4 yrs of operation and claims "Consumers simply aren't buying desktop computers like they used to, they're moving to laptops, tablets etc., so we're having to close the facility, so sorry..." And yet there were people so excited about that facility, they left the jobs they had elsewhere just to "work on those computers!" And Dell suddenly claims "We gotta close coz nobody buying desktops and unfortunately this state of the art multi-million dollar facility can ONLY BUILD DESKTOP COMPUTERS, can't change over to anything else..." Then it's later revealed that Dell "Opened a brand new facility in Mexico which will carry on the operations that the American facility used to handle..." 🙄So just more BS to make the jump to cheaper labor. This was of course why China ARTIFICIALLY DEVALUED it's own currency so that U.S. and other businesses would flock to China for CHEAP LABOR!! That's why 90+% of everything we buy is "Made in China" and elsewhere because the first businesses began looking for "cheap labor" out of greed and other companies examined their own budgets and figured "We can't compete with them the same way anymore unless we ALSO move to China, Mexico etc..." So they followed the MONEY. Of course the move by China brought several million there OUT of poverty BUT for a time they had workers living in literal "animia cages" stacked on top of each other in "apartment buildings" and that's where many of them lived for years. I don't doubt many still do but others certainly don't, at American worker's expense and lousy American politicians get their "kickbacks" for facilitating it.
@guyinatruck Жыл бұрын
That is a really in depth analysis of how the Union is supposed to operate and how it’s all essentially ran by the politicians. I really appreciate your perspective, I believe much it to be true. I watched the company my father committed his whole adult life to 36 yrs to be exact (steelcase) one day send them a letter stating they are moving the business to Mexico as it’s cheaper to operate and to avoid bankruptcy. It’s all very sad, I get it, this is business and things go wrong, customers don’t pay or go under, employees don’t wanna work, management messes up, etc. but man I just feel like at such a high level and with the federal government having a stake in the business that it could’ve been avoided. I do think that although over the years the teamsters Union gave Yellow concessions and reduced payroll and benefits, that in the last 9 months they blocked the company from moving forward with plans to restructure caused their customers to run to competitors who were more reliable. I mean who would want millions of dollars of freight in the limbo of a strike.
