I fell in love with her voice when l heard her singing with Linda Ronstadt on Ronstadt's Heart Like a Wheel album. They sang a cover of Hank Williams ' I Can't Help It. My dad always had a country station playing on the radio and soon I could recognize Emmylou's voice doing background vocals with other artists. But the first solo song I fell in love with was Defying Gravity. From that moment on, I had to back track and buy, yes, the vinyl albums released prior to Quarter Moon in a 10 cent town.

In 1975 I went to a Uriah Heep concert. Opening acts were Elvin Bishop and Emmylou. The promoter must have been eating Quaaludes for days before booking that lineup! Emmylou took the stage in front of the curtain with an acoustic guitar and a bar stool. Sat down and began to croon soft melodies in a folksy manner...which was certainly NOT what we had come to hear. In moments tears began to streak her lovely face but she never let on. She just sat there and continued her set. After a bit the crowd settles down and Emmylou got a grip on things and became...well, one of the gurls that, over the course of time, has stolen my heart. Such a courageous performance in front of a hostile crowd has, arguably, never before been freely given. Since then this ol' metalhead still perks up at the mention of her name. I still play both of the trio collaboration albums...in times of quiet reflection.

Always thought she was interesting, she always had access to the top notch though. So many really talented musicians beat their brains out and never get a break, we all know them.

Great report, except for the fact that Bill Monroe gave EmmyLou a huge boost to the world market. I was a bit sad at not hearing about her bluegrass days with Bill.

And Ricky Scaggs in her band. They were influenced by each other. Ricky came over from Bill Monroe.

@@floydvaughn836Yes it was Skaggs who brought Emmylou to Bluegrass with Albums like ROSES IN THE SNOW.

Sometime in the mid sixties, she was playing in the Santa Cruz area on Halloween. She saw me and a friend looking in at the theater entrance. She came out and asked if we wanted to come in. She was in a sort of cat outfit. I didn’t recognize her until she got on stage. I am still carrying the thrill of that. ❤

Re: "The Cellar Door"...I was privileged to hear blues musician/library artist John P. Hammond there. (Son of the Columbia Records producer, John Hammond). Awesome venue for music (small & intimate).

I'm not at all a country fan and only discovered ELH because her fragile, seductive and sinister cover of Snake Song was in Lawless. but damn, could a person be more blessed? talent, brains and beauty. jeez, leave some for the rest of us, lady! 😆

I first heard Emmylou Harris on the much overlooked 1980 album The Legend of Jesse James singing the part of Zerelda James (Jesse's wife). She was married to Paul Kennerly who wrote the soundtrack. Well worth a listen for her fans.

EL and GP is the only true Star is Born story. Not Streisand and Kris. Not Cooper and GaGa. Not Frederic March. Don't know why a movie hasn't been made of their story or of Gram's life. Would be a greàt story on film if done right. All that is needed is the truth and the facts. Only one person could play EL But she won't. Too painful. But would be a great tribute to her and his career.
