Malcom X was NOT Denzel's 'breakthrough' role. He already had an Oscar for Glory 3 years before. And a nomination 2 years before that for Cry Freedom.

@@pierrejecroi8801 and how did he get that role?! Spike Lee (director) and Denzel are tight. Spike Lee helped launch Denzel's career. Look I'm not saying he's not talented. But there are plenty of other more talented actors out there. JDW's talent doesn't stand out compare to them.

I saw him in Ballers and because of certain inflections in his voice, he sounds a lot like his father so I decided to look him up and it was then I realized he was Denzel's son. However, I was enjoying his acting long before realizing this.

Not really. Denzel played nothing but supporting roles under other big actors. Malcolm X was his first lead role which pushed him into more lead roles which eventually made him a A List Actor.

And besides even if that was true... Which it is not, there are plenty of famous people who play supporting roles. And he was still a well known star before Malcolm X. He had already been part of an Oscar nominated movie called Glory!

Malcolm X was his first nomination for Best Actor whom he lost to Al Pacino in A Scent of a Women. because of white washing cause Malcolm X in my opinion was a far better movie. But for the fact that he is nominated for Best Actor put him in the spot light. If you watch his biography. He clearly says he wasnt getting the roles he wanted until Spike Lee came in the first place.

You apparently have never seen it... .And all that about wanting better roles can be true and he can (was) still be famous. Before Malcolm X. Which was the original point. Go check out his filmography. Look at the roles this man had before X. He was on freaking St. Elseware, which was pretty popular. Folks already knew who he was.

But getting a Nomination for best actor push his career to a higher level I believe. He was popular in a lot of black movies but after Malcolm X he started doing bigger films with bigger A List White Actors. Which brought on the controversy of him not kissing white women in his early career cause of his large black women fan base. etc etc. One of his big lead male roles was with Julia Roberts in 1993 Pelican Brief when he refused to kiss her lol. Im just saying Malcolm X put him in that spot light.

That's why the narrator said when asked questions about his dad his answers feel rehearsed. He cannot tell the truth probably. He even said Denzel was shocked when he was nominated for the Globes. Usually people don't believe that dyslexic children can achieve much. I am sure dad didn't believe that he could be a great actor.

John David is a great actor and has better stage presence than his dad and a humbled spirit which I think he got from his mom. Denzel is a great actor but appeared to be to arrogant. Watching Malcolm and Marie made wonder is the story about Denzel and Pauletta in early years of their acting careers.🤔 Great movie! I can tell he has a good heart to love someone because he's careful about who he's trusting his heart with. I pray that God sends him a woman who humbly love him unconditionally. ❤🙏🏽 He's my #1 actor on the black and brown men list. I would love to see him do some Broadway shows.

The thing is that in the black community, Denzel Washington was popular long before he did Malcolm X. We had started taking note of him nearly a decade before he did that role. I remember watching Soldier's Story and sisters were so excited to see Denzel. They would roll on the ground for the man, "He is soooo fine!!!" they would chant and giggle. Before there was internet and social media, there were just people and word of mouth. We all knew back then that he was going to be the one.

I didn't know he was DW son until I watched Tenet and looked him up after the movie. I didn't get the feeling he was DZ son because he has his own style and that is a good thing. It was nice watching the movie and not comparing him to his dad or any character his dad played, and that was the evidence that he's his own man.

For sure, John David is definitely not just Denzel's son. He is a wonderful actor in his own right. Because of his beard, I didn't see the resemblance to Denzel initially. All I saw was this new, really handsome, really good actor. By the time the movie Tenet was released, I was aware of the relationship and could see how he moves (walks) just like his father as well as the resemblance and timbre of his voice. He actually looks like both of his parents rather than looking more like one than the other.

One day, more people will learn how to table their expectations for others , and allow them to be the individuals they strive to be, rather than what they expect them to be. JD was determined not to let others put him in that box , and it's paying off. He SHOULDN'T have had to do that; he and his father are different people, and he wasn't raised to be the second coming of Denzel. Glad that more folks are realizing this, but, sad, that he had to do some things a certain way to get them...us...to realize it.
