I have never understood the compulson to "collect" books. They are things to be used. Use them, and then get rid of them. Maybe keep a few that you "know" that you will read again. Or, check them out from a library.
@HypatiaK5 жыл бұрын
Craig Compton I think it may be a type of hoarding in some cases, but in others it’s inertia. The book owner has to take some sort of action to move the book along after they are done with it. Maybe bookcases encourage this tendency. If the books are lying around on the table, one might be more likely to move them along. Keeping a “donate” box in the closet has done a lot for clutter in my house. The American Kidney Fund picks up our donation almost every month. I’m sure other organizations provide this service as well.

The thing is KonMari is NOT minimalism. They are NOT one the same. As noted here, Marie Kondo's plan is not to focus on what you give away but what you want to KEEP. Meaning the focus isnt on being a minimalist, its on being happy with the possessions in your home. And the things in ones home that are necessities (ie: toilet bowl plunger and brush, diapers for kids, cleaning supplies etc that dont "spark joy" in and of themselves) she says you can take those things and put them into pretty boxes or holders or containers that DO spark joy so now even your necessities somehow spark joy to look at them. So if 100 books all make u happy or 50 pairs of shoes or whatever, she totally approves because it's NOT about minimalism and getting rid of more and more, it's about joy.

I agree with you. Most people misunderstood KonMari is about minimalism because she told us to keep 'only' what sparks joy - which is a misunderstanding. The word 'only' is indicating more about quality than quantity. What about if I have 80 pair of shoes that still spark joy? How about 100 art plates? How about all the LEGO collection? If they all still spark joy then of course I can still keep all of them, because they bring joy to me. It's all about organisation and how to present them in a way that bring more joy, not throwing out everything and only keep a set of number of items. So, no, it's not minimalism.

I read her book last year, and since then it has made me rethink of everything I know in a new way. Items should be used, loved and taken care of. "more" storage is very unnecessary. I only realized this after seeing the mountain of clothes I had and realized that my favorite pieces were the simple ones I've kept for Years instead of the brand new fashion pieces. My collection of music albums bring me more joy than some of my extremely expensive art supplies.....which shocked me. I also found that instead of randomly donating items I could select donate them to different places. Good jackets and shoes went to foster care teens. Art supplies to my childhood school, dressy office wear to an organization who helps homeless women attend job interviews so on and so forth. Seeing that made me want to give even more than what I initially donated. My room feels like it can breathe.

@@JeremyGalloway what did it for me (not just a show about how to organize stuff...) is that there is a second layer to how we treat stuff. That we might have unreasonable attachments to way too many things and they become weight. Like we spent more and more time cleaning or drowning in dust, because we amass what we have to move. My solution to all my stuff was: get better, more appealing storage so i can enjoy my WALL of stuff. But how often do i take out one of the hundreds and hundreds of books i amassed? I have books form 2017 still wrapped. I feel guilty about giving or even throwing something away that once meant something to me, but I also would not open those books again. This show gave me another viewpoint to just go more lightly and more conscious with or without that stuff. There are things that bring me joy by just having them - pure, essential consumerism. Then it's worth it for me. People who do not have that problem probably might not find anything in that show. And I am no hoarder, but i felt a bit overwhelmed that it never, ever looks nice in my flat and i always made excuses if somebody came over. I know happy messy homes of other people that are full of personal items, mismatched furniture, but they were just... personal and friendly - it's not like 'neat home' is a goal to have. But a home to feel welcome and i did not know how to get there. missing plants and more storage are not the answer ; )

@@JeremyGalloway Hi! I think if I had seen the show a few years ago I would have rolled my eyes a lot. Instead, after learning a few things about mindfulness, I actually see a lot of sense in the things she does. So like greeting the house looks like bullshit but it is not about the house knowing you are greeting it; it is about how you change your attitude when doing it (of course if you greet someone you try to be kind and such, and you can see the effect it had on the first family, it made them focus on the good things and the things they love about the house rather than what they don't, preparing them for the tidying process). Also when she says to put energy in the hands when you folding and try to spread love to the clothes etc., again I think it is about how it makes you feel; it forces you to do it mindfully and to associate something you maybe don't like - folding - with good emotions so that it turns into a good experience for you. She asks you to thank the clothes when you discard them not because the clothes care but because it can help if you feel guilty getting rid of things, and so on. Hope that helps seeing things differently :)

To all the people posting hate comments. Its called minimalism. So many people are obsessed with keeping an excess of things they don't need. Thats a sickness in itself. She sees the value in having only what you need and makes you happy. That is far from OCD. Maybe she is obsessed with it, but she took her passion and turned it into a profitable business that actually benefits others, without even selling them a product, but the exact opposite. That is genius. So tell me what have you done with your obsessions? Have you turned them into a profitable business? Konmari's "kyun!" is not her trademark - it's a phrase in the common Japanese lexicon to describe what she is saying. Western media need to learn to distinguish between things that are unique to her and what is common amongst all Japanese. In another video, the narrator was like "miscellaneous items, which she calls "komono"" which made me snort since komono is a japanese word that literally means "miscellaneous items". Her saying we need to appreciate things before discarding them is also a centuries old Japanese tradition - Japanese folk religion believes that things that come in close contact with humans take on a life/spirit of their own, so if they are treated or discarded in a disrespectful manner, those spirits will become goblins that can harm us. Sure, it's an old belief and I wouldn't be surprised if most Japanese people (especially younger ones) don't know about it that well, but it is NOT her idea. In Japan, konmari is just another one of the many tidying gurus we have, and is a "has been". No one made a big deal of her "kyun!" or thanking stuff because it's not unique. I am not trying to disparage Konmari - I just think we should understand things accurately, and Western media does NOT present her accurately.
@calm48575 жыл бұрын
Great comment. It's true, sometimes the media is too sensational and doesn't present facts as they are. When I first found about Marie Kondo's documentary and her method I thought it was going to be life changing and revolutionary, but it was just a normal show of people organizing their stuff. The thing about objects acquiring a soul of their own is indeed a very old belief in Japan. Anyone who has done some research on Japanese culture, or who has merely watched anime even, would know this. Knowing this before watching the documentary helps understand why she greets the houses and thanks discarded clothes. However, I agree that organizing can be therapeutic and that she has her merits for encouraging and teaching people who don't know how to organize to do it. Moreover, she seems like a very joyful person and portrays a cute persona. So kudos to her for making a business that helps people out of something she enjoys.

OCD is a real thing, but I think we’re too quick to make armchair diagnoses. I thought I was OCD because I had irresistible urges to tidy my whole room and would be unhappy and anxious if I didn’t. I’m in the middle of using the KonMari method, and my anxiety has dropped by a lot, because I’m organizing my life and I know where things are now-specifically, important papers and things. Removing the clutter makes you see exactly what is important and current in your life. This whole time, I’m thinking to myself, “Wow, everyone told me it was OCD for me to be incapable of standing this clutter. But Kondo has a way of TRULY removing clutter, and it’s making me so happy and calm.” Clutter is genuinely bad for your mental health! Again, OCD is real, but sometimes it’s actually the circumstance that needs changing, not you or your mindset.

Never, ever discard of books, unless you have finished them or have ebook versions and can give them to someone who will actually read them. I am in the process of putting all of my books on audio for free. How am I doing this? I am reading all of my books ALOUD and recording them in mp3 formats so I can listen to myself reading books - the way I was taught to read was aloud. I then store these audio books on my smartphone and laptop and share with others. that is right, this way, i can listen to my books in the car, while working out, etc. Now, I am DOUBLE reading my books and will go back to listen to my homemade audio book to relearn what I studied months, years an decades ago.

It's all about your mind people, Japanese are told that there's spirit inside every single object so they take good care of each object, they don't just use and throw away, they keep, they preserve, they hold them dear so that they don't throw things away or buy unecessary things.

so how did i end up with a fully functional treadmill, elliptical machine, Nordic Track UltraLift machine, an airdyne bike, spinning bike, cross trainer machine and bike trainer? Because all of the previous owners of these devices failed to appreciate what they had. The treadmill owner said he was moving and left it, along with a fully functional Bowflex, on the side of the road of his house as he was moving. I have used the bruce lee method for my life: keep what is useful, discard what is useless and bring what is unique to the experience. I love fitness equipment because I love being healthy and well. Apparently, the previous equipment owners (all out of shape and in poor fitness condition) didn't believe that the equipment bought them joy. However, when I look in the mirror every morning, I, and my wife, are very very happy with the results.

I think this would be a great method for hoarders because she focuses on what to keep and what brings joy instead of what has to be thrown away. Hoarders get anxiety when having to let go because you are taking away their safety net instead you provide hope and help them design a life they want to live instead of holding on to the past.

I recently moved apartments. Let me tell you, it was a horrifying, humbling and embarrassing experience. I live alone and I was ashamed when I saw how much stuff I had! I had to donate and also throw away so much! All that was hard earned money. Lesson well learnt. Never again am I going to repurchase all that I threw or gave away. I am doing a deliberate deep decluttering in my new apartment, with the intention of making it my lifestyle. I want it to permeate in all aspects of my life, since I have always indulged in everything in excess.

I started on my bedroom, then our other two “ junk” rooms. The first trip to Goodwill with 4 bags of clothes made me feel so relieved and free. Then it was on to 9 boxes of stored papers that I emptied out. My drawers are organized and some of them are even empty. Marie Kendo’s first video got me started. Now if I can just get my husband to start going through HIS things....

Marie Kondo helped me transition into my new room and get rid of stuff in my old one. I think there is value in creating "order" in a room (everything having a place), it makes you feel more at ease I think, like things are the way they should be. It lowers the anxiety of being unsure where things are and what their purpose is.

I have really bad anxiety & it’s gotten worse. I would buy things on amazon bc it made me happy in the moment. But as I brought more into my life, the more it felt like more weight was on my shoulders. I cleaned out as much as possible from my room, 7 bags of trash(thanks school) & 10 bags of donations. I’m not a minimalist. Ppl are confusing what Marie does to minimalism. She does not preach minimalism. She just thinks you should keep what makes you happy & what you actually need. I collect albums, Studio Ghibli movies, & Marvel comics & have no plans on getting rid of them any time soon. But I feel lighter with what I did retire from my room. I feel happier & more carefree when it comes to spending time in an area that I would feel so lost in. On top of that, I’m a lot better when it comes to purchasing new items. I’m more picky & certainly don’t do it as much as before 💖

Marie isn't about teaching you all new stuff. But rather she's helping you to look at what you already know. Her methods are simple. Easy. Not necessarily profound. And they're not meant to be. She reminds you to look at what you have, use what you already know to make decisions when decluttering.

I’m a college student, so tidying up my tiny space is especially important! I spent about three hours organizing all my drawers, and now it only takes less than a minute to find the clothes I want compared to 5-10 minutes before. You need one purse, not five. You don't need knick-knacks all over the place. So many people think they need so much. Everything is so extra in this age of consumerism. Society tells us we need to buy everything! I'd rather spend my money on travel and making memories. My house is clutter-free and I am happy with having only what I need. I hope more people can find happiness outside of materialistic things.
