I have seen them at Riot Fest and it was a great show…but then I worked a side hustle and came through the VIP gate with half the group and torn off wristbands…I honestly didn’t know who they were, but they sure let me know and that they were there to cancel…then I realized they were supposed to be playing… like then! They were pretty mean/f’d up, but rock on 🤘🏽 I helped them.

Duuuude same. Well, almost same-so..similar. First song I fell in love with was 3rd Planet (or Trailer Trash.. or Cowboy Dan😂) when I was about 8. Quickly felt more and more captivated with every song I heard, particularly on that album. My aunt is who turned me onto them and I have a vivid memory of every single time “Doin’ The Cockroach” came on we would drop to the floor, lying on our backs, with our arms and legs above us flailing like a cockroach stuck on its back. 😂🥹 Anyway, i didn’t listen to “Never Ending Math Equation” until I was around 12 and I just listened to it on repeat for hours at a time. Modest Mouse played a big part in my philosophy on life, death, existing, ‘God’, and religion.

I briefly got to meet Isaac Brock once, I believe back in 2018. Had to stay around the venue at a concert in Charlotte until about 2 AM, but it was absolutely worth it. In the way that you assume you might struggle to find something to say to your heroes, when you realize you're actually going to get to meet them, I grasped for some words and came out with the fact that, The Moon and Antarctica was extremely helpful for me getting over my father's death when I was 20. He responded by a saying, he just became a father and he certainly hopes that he would be around for more than 20 years of his daughter's life. Man the world has really gotten fucking weird since then... I miss seeing Modest Mouse live.

I saw them in I think 2011 and the crowd was really weak because it was like early afternoon and they played mostly new material at the time that no one knew and they got pretty upset with the crowd. Was probably the worst show I've ever been to tbh. I'd definitely check them out again though if I get the chance.
@dreamshore_music2 жыл бұрын
i saw them only twice. first time in Barcelona, at primavera. the set / sounds wasn't as good. but brock wore this eyepatch the entire set. he lifted it up for a second and he had a huge black eye. Classic Brock some years slater saw them in Amsterdam. they were huge and didn't expect too much tbh, except that they'd play "whale song" which was on repeat (they played it). they started the set with "first world planet" and half of the set were older classics. i had a drink and somebody offered me mdma, so i was a bit enthusiast and yelled along with a random dude for "custom concern". i hate people yelling for songs, but yeah. the crowd was huge, and Isaac caught our eyes when he heard us yelling. He mumbled sure, and started playing it. Half of the band stood around as it's guitar + bass + drum. The entire set was so good, and this show remains of my favorite shows until today.
@tonythunder89 Жыл бұрын
One of my fav moments on the internet is from super old footage of a show in my home town in okc in 1997 I believe, where he’s asking the crowd for a knife and started cutting himself on stage. (Self harm isn’t cool at all, BUT it was def rock n roll asf ). My fav personal experience was them playing a surprise show at that same small venue in 2008 (they were huge then) and they started the show with ‘Never Ending Math Equation’ (one of their best songs) and then Isaac smashed the shit out of his guitar, handed it to the crowd and continued a really great show. Me and my friend waited for them to come out after the show and they came out way later and Isaac was like “ah, I don’t really wanna ..” and my super duper young and very drunk ass was like “aww cmon man! I spent 100’s of dollars to see y’all” (which wasn’t cool to say, but I was a kid) but he was like “oh alright just a few minutes’ and talked with us for a bit, then everyone ran up and started hounding him. Felt bad, but he was very cool for that.

I'm from Detroit and I used to hang out with John Sinclair. He used to frequent a weekly drum circle that I went to. The two of us became pretty close and we would often get into intense conversations about politics, race and philosophy. He's a really enlightened kind of person and very easy to talk to if he respects your mindset. I was a little starstruck the first time that I met him, but his personality makes you very at ease very quickly. Still, it blows my mind that I am somebody born in the late 80s who has a friend that John Lennon wrote a song about. That's freaking wild. I love Detroit.

The Mark on the Wall reference is a often mentioned one - there's also the 19th century Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky, whose personality reminds me a bit of Isaac Brock. Wish I could ask the guy if it's just a coincidence. Anyway, I hope Modest Mouse gets considered as a legendary band like a lot of those early rock bands are nowadays - Eric Judy, Jeremiah Green, and Isaac are three criminally underrated musicians on their respective instruments. Isaac's style on guitar is pure inventiveness and imagination - Jeremiah's drumming is so flexible and constant that it almost has a fluid consistency to it as he rolls effortlessly with the rest of the band or takes the reigns on his own - and Eric is probably the most underrated of the bunch, just go listen to some isolated bass lines off their earlier stuff like Breakthrough, where he's showing the same inventiveness as Isaac - his bass lines often bleeding over to where you can't easily tell what's bass and what's guitar - and even later on when the distinction is more clear he's coming up with some downright funky stuff.

The name is cool. Thought it was a clever play on the name Mighty Mouse. Either way, they have a great sound.

I appreciate the mini doc, but I'd run it by a skilled editor next time.

I heard different. I was under the impression the name came from speech classes Isaac took due his speech impediment where they had him repeat the words modest mouse to improve

Wikipedia used to credit the Virginia Wolfe novel for their name.

Forgot the white panther party was a thing. I’ll do more research but the fact that they took someone in to take care of sounds panther party like. My dad was a part of it in Oakland and it’s all about looking out for each other at the end of the day. We all have to work on stopping the hate, me included.

The sad truth of Modest Mouse is that their dance craze "The Cockroach" is the greatest alt rock dance song ever. And those posers Prideful Vole totally ripped them off with "The Tick Hop"

I've seen them three times in person but they were only good live once. I love them, but I have to be honest about the live stuff edit: the good on was with Johnny Marr in 2007 or 08 when they opened for REM
