In this video I delve into the initial release of evolution of combat on pre eoc runescape. This is not a rant video, nor am I bashing the newer version of the game. The game is in a better state now, minus the microtransactions. I am merely documenting the initial release of Evolution of Combat and player's reactions to it. Also factual changes made by Jagex themselves.

Keep in mind that RS3 combat wise is in a much better state than it was upon the initital 2012 EOC release (imo). Thank you guys for watching & as always, my source videos are in the description with links to the original channels and videos.

Wasn't the EoC update around the bot nuking update? I feel like that is a major reason for sudden drop of the number of active players, even today there are next to no bots in RS3.

Eoc on original launch pretty much killed the pvp community over night. They destroyed special attack weapons, and chaged weild requirements on common gear (ie iron armour to level 10 defense, and rune to level 50).

@@Blittsplitt5 Smooth brain take. The PVP community's foundation is people knowing how to do it. That means builds that have coherent stats and items that go together to achieve a certain goal. The rug was ripped out from underneath the PVP community when OEC was released because that kind of stuff takes time and willingness to adjust to. There was neither so the community died. It's not difficult to understand, and you pretending people were foaming at the mouth raging about it instead of moving to private servers where they can manually adjust stats and get straight to pvping anyways is just nonsense and makes you look like a moron.
@SpiralPowerGaming

@@Blittsplitt5 Can you not understand other peoples point of view? Is your empathy that lacking? Do you really think that his issue is that they made rune armour 50 defence? Yes they changed it and people weren’t happy about it. Because all of the pvp accounts, everything the community had come to love, everything about this special little niche was destroyed in one update. Pures? Gone. PVP? Gone. Iconic weapons? Gone. That’s the issue man, and they nearly lost the company for it. Meanwhile you’re sat there being like “Oh well it just makes sense.” As if it wasn’t the equivalent to blowing their foot off with a shotgun because a prosthesis might make them run faster.

I dropped everything at the GE the day before the eoc update. The market was shit and my bank value was down 900%. As soon as I got on and saw my whip was less then 200k that was the straw. All my hard work and items devalued to nothing. An Over 200m bank work pennies to what it was. I never felt so mad. Especially because it's an update literally no one asked for. 90% of the community complains and they respond with a "you don't know if you'll like it until you try". Runescape HD was amazing and as far as the "better more modern of a game" it should have went. It was perfect. All they needed was polling like in osrs and it would have been a flawless game. The biggest problem with eoc that exists to this day is the pacing. It expected you to input multiple things per tick which completely destroyed the engine. If it were treated as faster special attacks it would have gone over a lot better but their investors were pressuring them to become a wow clone so they had to throw out all that history and make a shittier experience. The homogenization sucked too. Even now weapons don't stand out against each other and it took a whole failed update to attempt and give the various weapons distinct attributes. Ironically the reason it never came out is because it homogenized the weapons further.
@therunescapehistorian

@jmtrad1906
@jmtrad1906 3 жыл бұрын
As a new RS3 player I need to agree that asking multiple inputs in a game that works with a 0.6 tick sucks ass. I only play the Revo++ that attacks are automatic because I can't enjoy going manual in this game. And because of that I can't fight majority of bosses properly. Is my worst experience with the game.
@Quasarcool
@Quasarcool 3 жыл бұрын
I think you may be being slightly hyperbolic by saying " It expected you to input multiple things per tick", A Global cooldown(GCD) in RS3 is 1.8 secs or 3 ticks, so you can play full manual inputting one ability every 3 ticks. However some abilities are longer than the GCD, So in practice your inputs are fewer than 1 every GCD. Also most of the player base use some version of revolution, which can be set automatically fire all abilities with zero inputs or be tailored to only fire basic abilities with player inputs for thresholds and ultimate's, again greatly reducing the amount of player needed inputs below 1 per GCD. However I agree that they homogenized the weapons/playstyles too much at the release of EOC. Jagex in recent times have however done a much better job making the combat styles/weapons unique and you have various playstyles that exist nowadays.

As much as I love osrs and pre eoc runescape, I’m finding myself playing rs3 way more now. Osrs just reals like all I have left to do is grind 99s and do the same bosses over and over and over again. Rs3 has a MUCH better quality of life feeling to it and the less grindy aspect makes the game really fun. It’s a shame that most mini games are pretty much dead as they were fun as fuck. The truth is that osrs has a really shit endgame when you consider the time it takes to get there without completely no lifing it

I see what you mean, and I've tried to get into RS3 seriously at least 3 times and 3 times I've been drawn away from it, OSRS made a good job in letting you figure everything out slow so the early game is very user friendly (the end does become a grindfest where you need to become a 3 tick master in optimizarion to "enjoy" the game) But the openning of RS3 is so long and convoluted, you can't walk 3 steps without getting a new quest, yet everything seems to be already solved for you so theres no satisfaction and the whole ability system just makes it feel like a WoW ripoff like many other games where half of your screen is covered by random ability icons I've never got a 99 on osrs but I did manage to get a quest cape with Song of the Elves and DS2 which was my initial goal so I decided to quit and give RS3 another try but again, even with all the fancy graphics and mechanics it felt sooo generic and charmless, I reaaaally wanted to enjoy it this time

Ability bars are the main reason I've never really been able to get into any other MMO, they never felt fun to me so I was really disappointed when I found one in Runescape back in the day, I wasn't really actively playing at the time but I remember logging on just thinking wtf, the graphic overhaul removed a lot of the charm or maybe just nostalgia, don't know or care. I love the low poly look of old-school and I'm glad it's here to stay, like a time capsule of a simpler time. I started osrs when it launched but only really got into it during the pandemic, I didn't want to restart all my progress, we're talking years of work. I was a big combat level 50 or so if I remember correctly, ironically when I got back into the game and committed to playing osrs I surpassed my RS3 stats in less than a month. Crazy how much easier it is to make progress as an adult, I guess 10 year old me just didn't have the patience for grinding. I remember seeing all the players at the GE wearing their Dragon armour and being so jealous because I didn't have the defense level to wear, to 10 year old me, dragon was the top, I had no clue about anything after that and tbh even now I'm not that familiar, my combat stats are in the 70s but I still just wear rune if I'm using melee, I'm more into magic so I usually just wear my bloodbark for PVE, got 99 magic the other day which was pretty hype, it my first 99 after playing for 17 years

Well, think of it this way. 1. If I wanted to play an mmo with hot keys, what was stopping me before from just going and playing an mmo with hot keys? 2. Now that I was forced to use the system, what do I do when the game to me was supposed to be a chill thing to do while I did other things like homework? 3. What do I do now that the one main focus I had for the game which was building pures and PVP is now effectively dead? The dozens of accounts I spent time on building, the items I’d worked so hard for, and the clans I’d become a part of. Gone in one update that I had zero say in. Meanwhile people were telling me it’s a good thing because the game was becoming more modernized. I’m not saying people were bad for enjoying it, I’m saying I’d sunk hundreds of hours into becoming very good in the old system, building accounts, risk fighting etc. and that all got ripped away from me. Of course I’m not going to continue playing that game or paying the upkeep for membership on a whole bunch of accounts. If I wanted WOW I would have been playing WOW.

After that I just logged out for 2 years. I still play rs3 to this day, But I still hate eoc to the core.

I never really did mind the EOC update, but I also had experience with other MMO's like Lord of the Rings Online so it wasnt that huge of a difference for me, what I didnt like about it however was like "yeah, so we're doing this now" and then also ignored people when the players said that there was bugs.

I stopped playing around 2010 2011. I remember the graphics were changing and this EOC was happening. I logged back in around 2013 the interface was different the graphics were different. No one on my friends list was on. I think I clicked once Just to see my guy move then I logged out. It don't make sense to grind on a game when you hate how it looks and don't enjoy the combat. I have thought about a return but rs3 looks too complicated and if I played old runescape again id feel like I'm living in the past and need to accept rs3. So I just watch vids

I think what ruined it was not the combat system itself, but rather the fact that you were forced to now manually activate abilities to do something that used to be very afk and you had no legacy or revolution to rely on so that turned many off especially since you had no content that actually took advantage of this system so people felt like they had to put in more effort to play the same content that you used aka full manual no afk. It took them months before even 1 EoC related update came in, they were totally focusing on just the combat and no content alongside it Armor was unbalanced where arma became easy with t70 gear etc. Pvp became a nightmare without good knowledge on the abilities. Chatting during combat itself also suffered since you had to press enter each time you wanted to talk which was annoying, but it also meant that when you were typing you were losing dps so it became not only annoying to talk, but your kills and training suffered for it if you tried to.

I kept playing at the time and I have some fond memories especially of when Kalphite King got released. But I remember me and my clanmates just laughing at how ridiculously rushed it all felt. The update was 1000% not ready and it showed. I spent the majority of the latter half of 2012 abusing the actionbar for skilling and avoiding combat for the most part due to how broken it was. I was never opposed to the update but I was very much angry at how rushed it was and the effects rushing the update had on the playerbase.

I gave EOC a fair short for like 2 months. To be fair, the actual gameplay of EOC was interesting and a fresh quality of life update to an ancient system designed for 2002. What killed the game for me and what forced me to quit was not the EOC combat, but the aggressive and intrusive pay-to-win monetization that got implemented at the same time as EOC. Spin the prize wheel! Buy more spins! Buy faster xp! Buy a smoother experience! Daily rewards! Why haven't you paid for boosts yet?! That shit was awful and unavoidable and ruined the whole self-sufficient spirt of the game.

As a person that has earned the gamebreaker title for the 2000+ hours of beta testing on eoc id like to say one thing.. All of the gamebreakers that are my friends and took part in the beta had one thing in common.. though we all had our disagreements about different aspects of the combat changes.. We all agreed it was not ready for release and we all were very upset when it was forced to come out that November.

I absolutely loved runescape and dreaded the eoc update. After 2 years of deciding I was done with the game I gave rs3 a shot and enjoyed it. Jagex at the time thought they could do bigger and better updates with a W.O.W combat system. Problem is that runescape is a totally different game and unique in its own way. Current day 07 is releasing banger pvm content.

The thing that bothered me the most with these is that it was so unnecesary. People were looking for new content. The old system was what people liked because it was simple and different compared to MMORPGs such as WoW. I think that people would rather have new experiences than a new system that was flawed at release.

How is it better now compared to before? I'm genuinely asking. I gave EOC probably a dozen chances many years ago because I truly wanted to like it but no matter how I tried to convince myself, it was nothing like the game I enjoyed. I hear people say this a lot though, that it's better now, I don't think I've heard an explanation as to why.

Reading the title I thought this was a video about the botnuke, which interested me. Turns out it's just another video about the EoC. My point of view is that when I started in 2010 I hated combat and considered quitting the game. I spammed the forums asking for better and interactive combat using keybound abilities, and lost interest in the game as my clan died in 2011. I returned for the EoC and stayed; best update in the game's history by far, as it corrected a fundamental problem.

@Baratheon.
@Baratheon. 2 жыл бұрын
Main problem was it was non-consensually forced on all the players. Especially when Jagex knew if they put a vote it'd be 80% of the player-base voting No. To stress - if player's wanted a EoC stylistic type game they'd play Warcraft, League or any of that similar generic trash Also removed aspects of the game an entire swathe of players revolved around (people in the PvP pking combat scene). it was dead on arrival, even though I played Rs3 until the Divination & interface update. Jagex even had the gall to say " we're doing you a favor introducing RS2 (2007), my buds" when really they had no choice as their game was in death grips and revenue streams of Rs3 were drying up due more than half the playerbase cancelling membership (hence the introduction of more and more Mircotransactions). They were loath to admit how badly they fucked up that's why they took so long to bring back RS2.

Reading the comments in this comment section makes me realize just how little OSRS players know about EOC. They tried it for a short time in 2012 when it was dogshit and never looked into it ever again. The amount of people who thinks the combat is even remotely similar to what was released in 2012 is disturbing. Maybe they should read up on it, before they critique it.

Worst part about it personally, is a couple weeks earlier I had finally achieved my first 99. Which felt great. Then they completely changed the game, taking something i spent untold about of hours into and preferably destroyed the progress I was so devoted to over night. Well, actually it wasn't over night, I hated dungoneering, felt like it was a mini game they "turned into a skill", constitution didn't make sense and seemed redundant, summoning even eventually changed currency as a whole and devalued a lot of market... it was as if they just kept sewing the game up and screwing it up over and over and one day finally said, "fuck it lets change it all" and ripped the heart out of the game. Simplicity, the thing that made runescape fun was dead and gone..

I feel like while EoC was absolutely dogshit on its own, but it was the three straws that broke the camel's back. I remember just hating RuneScape every year after like 2009. Insane power creep, SoF, complete change in game style and feel, completely different type of quests (much more narrated. Some were very good though), and new and improved "catch up" skilling methods (runespan HOLY FUCK) I'm sticking to my OSRS, and while it has some blunders I'm really really really happy with it

I honestly enjoy both, OSRS and RS3. I play runescape since 2006 and still loving it. Now, with bosses like Zuk, Arch Glacor, Telos etc, you really can enjoy Pvming a lot. And Everyone, no matter how skilled they are, can enjoy it, due to the enrage systems. Some enjoy 100% Telos while others go for the challange to get to 4000%. But OSRS is great too. I enjoy running raids 1 hunting for T Bows or doing Slayer and skilling bosses :D At the end, everyone should play what he enjoys the most. Whenever i want some nice flow of a fight with knowing when to burst dps, when to rather grab a shield and use def abilities, then i go and do some Rs3 pvming :P

It's like when Runescape introduced territories they were mimicking WoW and then with these skill "abilities" they were mimicking Diablo. It is like they couldn't see that the community loved Runescape for being Runescape and so Jagex spent a bunch of time and money into "botoxing" Runescape to look like other popular games in hopes that it would stay relevant..... - Player since 2004

the worst was jagex took away that feeling you get when you hit a new max, there was a grind and a feeling associated with being able to hit that 13 with a d long or whatever I dont even really remember . Also with: understanding timing, and strategy, and switching weapons , understanding armor stats, when to eat , when to pot, when to tele, buy sharks or swords based on price or your ability to fish hi lvl fish and many many more nuances and idiosyncrasies the original combat from rs2 was way more complicated than was probably thought internally.
@Pietrosavr
@Pietrosavr 6 ай бұрын
So true, I was leveling up a new account and I'm always confused what my max hit is, there is too many numbers and too many skills. I think there could possibly be a combat rework where there are only 2-4 essential skills. I think something like a combination between mobas 3 basic and 1 ultimate skill, and dark souls action combat would fit. We already have a block or evade animation when we get attacked, if we instead turned it into a skill so that timing was important, just that by itself would improve combat, with the option to automate it of course. There is no need for 50 skills to make combat engaging. Actually that's what I would do, add attack, block and evade options, with the possibility to automate them and keep the fourth attack for a special attack that comes from the weapon. That would be well integrated, keeping the max hit and everything without ruining anything.

im only a new player but what I can gleem from this essentially they MMOified it and made it too much like other mmos like WOW, which removed the uniqueness and versatility of the previous game. Without significant testing or transition period. too much things were changed which effected items usability and markets, base combat mechanics etc and made people completely uninterested in playing anymore. Seems like it has just proliferated into rs3 today. The saving grace is that without this event and gradual transitiion into the cookie cutter modern game, OSRS never would have been released with a different development perspective like the poll system.
