The Uranium Suite | Ride the Cyclone Animatic

This was my final for my last advanced storyboarding class! And as of this premiere, I've officially graduated art school with a BFA in storyboarding and 2D/CG animation!
I haven't actually seen Ride the Cyclone so excuse me if it takes some leaps from the established lore. I based the character designs off of a combination of the Broadway casts I researched and the Cyclone design off the Loop Gap rollercoaster and of course the Coney Island Cyclone. I just made this because it looked fun to make in my head when I was Animatic Daydreaming™ and it was!

Because the amount of comments is getting a little annoying, yes! The style does resemble The Owl House! :) If you look at my channel, I've been making Owl House content for a while and it's natural for the style to bleed in, haha! Not a bad thing at all.

I just noticed (this might be a stretch) At 1:25 when the worker is giving thumbs up to somebody, Ricky isn’t looking at her. The frame also pauses for a moment as if somebody was supposed to react and give her a thumbs up back. This might be the implication that Jane was also on the ride but she’s not visible since nobody remembers her after their deaths. If that’s the case that’s so genius

I love how surreal you made their fall as they ascend around the world because they really don't know what to think, only about their world, their town that they will never leave and the disconect with the real horror on the ground from horrified onlookers and the aftermath with the police and them rocketing back to earth. So cool. Nice work dude.

This animatic just makes the cyclone accident even more tragic because they were just kids with big dreams. And this animatic perfectly encapsulates that. They were just kids dreaming of leaving Uranium but they would never leave that town alive...

Found out about this musical because of a piece of Owl House fanart and I've listened to it a bunch on Spotify since. It's funny it took your animatic for me to actually realize breaking at the loop section would cause a trajectory that arcs harder than the sort of Roller Coaster Tycoon flyoff I always pictured.

At 1:34 you can see 6 people sitting in the cart - so the hint of her being there is neat Edit: Interestingly before the wheel breaks off, you see only five people in the cart - and later on as well. Maybe she died way earlier than the others or fell out of the cart before and no one noticed?

I really love the part what you done here AT 3:11 The guy drinking his troubles then looking up in horror with the lyric ''Drink some brew'' 3:11 Then people gathering around in horror aligning positioning themselves like a choir with the lyric ''join the choir'' As if to say join the gasping in horrer townsfolk if you please 3:12 Then shot of the Cyclone with smoke coming out and police cars and ambulances already there and tecnically this is there Funeral after they all **Died** there, with the lyric "Build yourself a funeral pyre" 3:13

I love how bittersweet their faces are at the beginning. They seem to be enjoying performing, but they don't love the town as much as the lyrics suggest. By the time their performance ends, Mischa looks absolutely disgusted, Noel is depressed, Ricky is sad, and even Constance and Ocean look disappointed.

Glad to see another great animatic from you, it's very good and beautifully done! I always find it interesting to see different interpretations of media in another format than it was orignally made in. Even if I've never seen the musical, I love how your use of symbolism and storytelling gets the gist of what's happening across fairly well. The spinning shot of the stars before the rollercoaster car came back down was chilling, alongside the whole sequence of the decesent itself.

GOD!! I’ve always really been into your animation style but you literally brought one of my long-term brain animatics to life! Everything is so detail oriented and just exactly how I imagined it in my head. Your understanding of musical timing/cues and its translation into principles of animation is absolutely unbelievable and so refreshing after my exposure to so many plain animatics. It’s like a fresh breath of air, as an animator and an actor myself. I just can’t emphasize how perfect and appropriate every shot, perspective, and background detail is. And there were even a few creative choices that surprised me in a way like how I never interpreted the song before!
