Another American here… his tenure as an F1 driver has been one of frustration. He was better in the lower categories of open wheel racing, but it is a different world compared to F1. @@sz5876Well F2 cars and IndyCars might be similar on pace, but they are completely different in design and how they race. IndyCars are more agile throughout corners due to their smaller tires, but that is counteracted by their increase in weight recently and lower top speed. F2 cars handle like boats because of how much they weigh, but thats counteracted by their power and speed. A more accurate comparison to IndyCars would be Super Formula cars as they have similar designs and constructions to each other.

Feel like this should be said - as there’s quite a few Americans in particular missing the forest for the trees: Sargeant is not being dropped solely because he crashes - and it’s definitely not because “he’s American, Brits hate us!” (If anything, he partially got his seat because of his nationality, so false argument to begin with.) Instead, Williams can see the writing on the wall that has been there for the whole year. The guy is on a downward spiral - he doesn’t and won’t have a seat for next year - and he’s only going to make more mistakes as more and more pressure mounts and the more that he struggles. Fundamentally, if the guy is unhappy, and is becoming more unhappy the longer that he stays in F1, then it’s in the best interests of both parties to part ways

@infidel1993

@@rkentwenger5095meh, I don’t think they undervalue it as much as most IndyCar teams and drivers undervalue F1 these days. As recently as the late 90’s, IndyCar was a legitimate feader series for F1, but then the CART/IRL split happened, and the rules/technology gap widened. On top of which, most drivers were content to stay in IndyCar because there was (and still is) plenty of domestic sponsorship money to go around. A solid IndyCar driver who consistently runs in the top 10 and manages to get a win or two can expect a healthy seven-figure salary. Meanwhile, in F2, you have to PAY THE TEAM anywhere from £1.5-3 million, either through personal sponsorships or out of pocket, just to compete. It’s brutal.

I disagree with the "downward spiral". There shouldn't be any more pressure, since he doesn't need to prove himself to get a seat that's not available anymore. He was on a good run of form before Belgium, and was decent enough in the Dutch GP (nothing great or deserving of a future seat, but still acceptable) If he can focus on enjoying the rest of his career, he can take some of the pressure off.

During the 2023 and 2024 Formula 1 seasons, Logan Sargeant has been the driver with the highest repair costs due to crashes attributed to his driving. In 2023 alone, Sargeant's incidents cost Williams a significant $4.33 million, making him the most costly driver in terms of damages. This amount far exceeded that of his teammate Alex Albon, who incurred around $2.78 million in damage-related costs (Grand Tour Nation) (Total Motorsport). While Sargeant topped the list for 2023, there were other drivers who also accumulated substantial repair costs due to their driving errors. For example, Carlos Sainz's incidents amounted to $3.64 million, and Sergio Perez's to $3.22 million (Grand Tour Nation) (Total Motorsport). However, none surpassed Sargeant in terms of the financial impact on their respective teams. Overall, Sargeant's driving incidents have posed a significant financial burden on Williams, especially under the cost-cap regulations that limit the budgets of F1 teams (Total Motorsport). I would not blame Williams in replacing him before the end of the season. It was generous of the team to give him this year to try to improve, sadly he has not.

As an American F1 fan for 45 + years, I root for Sargeant to step it up, but it is pretty clear he is just not going to make this decision pay off for Williams,.. SO... Time to GO! Lets move on Team Willy. Sadly its past time and this weekend proved it beyond a doubt pretty clearly. PS... Same sentiment goes to the Ricciardo situation. As a huge DR fan, I was gutted by his Mclaren experience, but kept faith. I believed he could show his value and perform in a good car. So far he has just NOT risen to the occasion nor had as much as a sniff of his former level and ability. I rate Tsunoda OK, he seems to be a upper midfield level driver, but for DR to be regularly beaten solidly by Tsunoda pretty much says it all right?! Tsunoda is NEVER going to be looked at as a future champion and if he's beating DR regularly...? Nuff said.... Time to GO DR. ;^(

Williams should take the chance on Mick. Despite his misfortunes and mistakes in his career, he found something in his 2022 campaign that Sargeant has rarely ever had: solid race pace. Mick was on pace with KMag many times and even beat him a few times; he has the ability to do the same against Albon. Whatever happens, Sargeant needs to be removed from the car before Monza, as tough as that is to say.

I'd really like to see Colapinto in the Williams seat. It won't happen, a reflection of how risk averse F1 teams are in the current environment. I get the financial / development budget implications of dropping a position in the WCC for an ascendant team, I just wish real in car young driver development was given the same priority. On another note of things that won't happen and at the risk of contradicting my previous assertion - how good would it be to see Nico Rosberg back for a quick 3 year stint at Audi from next year? Danny Ric isn't a bad fit for a shortish Audi stint either. Two experienced drivers + Ricciardos ridiculously advantageous marketability seems like a fit for a new high profile constructor without much chance of short term on track success.

I've been a Logan supporter since his F3 days in 2019, but i agree that he has to go. I'm not sure what changed from the junior categories to F1, because Logan in F3 and F2 vesus Logan in F1 are two completely different drivers. Logan used to be one of the cleanest drivers on the grid back then while also showing great pace and fighting at the front. He never made silly mistakes like the one in Zandvoort, so I don't know what changed. He definitely isn't good enough for F1, but maybe he could be better in others series like IndyCar or WEC. It's good to see that's he's been professional about all of it and I hope he finds something else in the future.

Two of the most important elements of driver selection aren't mentioned here. Owners wishes and the sponsors drivers already or can attract. It is no coincidence that Dorilton (US company) owned Williams has the only American driver on the grid. Or why German Audi's first pick was Hulkenberg from Germany. Teams must weigh up the cost of a lesser driver impact on constructors etc and financial gains from other sources. More info on those motives would be interesting.
