I've got a friend who is in the Royal Navy and was stationed in Norway for a few months, he said that the day he realised the sheer mass of the US military and its budget was when he left his barracks for only a day and when he came back there was a massive US camp/ base set up right next to him. He couldn't believe just how fast all the equipment and barracks had been formed together although often speaks of the mental funding of the US.

I'm sure you already know this Johnny but there is a huge court case about a hit and run incident near a military base here in the UK. The victim was a British citizen and the accused perpetrator was the wife of an American who was stationed at a base. She fled citing diplomatic immunity and thus hasn't faced trial. Highlights the grey area of jurisdiction with regards to American bases.

I have worked on US bases abroad and currently live privately in a European country that has US bases. While some people resent the presence of US military, it is rarely mentioned. They almost always say that it doesn't bother them personally, and that it helps provide work for the locals and injects a ton of money into the local economy. Some have actually complained when the bases were shut down, because it killed the local economy. So, I am sure we can find the same pros and cons going back to the Roman Empire, too.

Actually there is a rather sophisticated system to identify every facility and ships at sea! Your count is about 100 short. Some of these locations are part of communication networks. Some are intelligence gathering sights. Some are used to preposition equipment 'just in case'. Some are early warning facilities, like the one you mentioned in Greenland.

Living on a military installation one thing I can see is that the military population largely supports the surrounding economy and boosts it a lot. Varying from just food, drinking, houses/rent, barbers, clothing alterations, and general shopping these area around larger installations end up making decent amounts of money from all the military personnel and their spouses that live and shop in the area. On the negative side this military population also brings much more traffic as tons of people are trying to go to and from the same area every day. Also depending on the base they cause a lot of surrounding noise pollution whether it be aircraft, explosions, helicopters, etc. There are both negatives and positives to living next to military installations

The reason why all those bases still exist is because they signed the same 1955 contract with the Taylor company which states every Taylor C602 ice cream machine must be kept and protected by the US military on every base ever made, and can NOT be removed or replaced unless you " call the guy"

Hai Johnny, have been enjoying your videos for a while now! Thanks! I want to share a weird experience I had when I was travelling with my ex-wife through Spain. In de South western part there is a us base situated. We were amazed about the size of it. We came up to the city centre and went for a sandwich and some other stuff. When we came back our Spanish rental car had obtained a parking ticket. We were quite surprised about that. My wife, highly natural blond got out of the car when we passed a police officer on the street. To ask about the reason of the ticket. The weirdest thing happend. He shouted out: no problem mamm. And saluted my wife. We are both Dutch but I think the local authorities have instructed their staff the stay the f@ck out of the way of maybe-personell of us bases
@mikerodgers7535

I think it's probably more likely they were instructed to stay out of the way of maybe non personnel. I have friends who have been stationed abroad several times, and from what I gather, the MPs have no problem being a massive pain in the ass to US military personnel, lol.

Mate, Two months ago I watched a really good documentary on KZbin about a rural town/community in Okinawa being divided by the building of a new U.S base which was partially completed at the time of recording. Ut interviewed many of the towns locals from both sides of the divide including one really lovely old lady who was an active demonstrator against its construction and survived and remembered the U.S invasion in 1945, I have just spent fifty minutes going back through my watch history and couldn't find it. So sorry, wish I could give you more, If I do manage to remember what it was called and find it I will update this message. In the meantime just know its out there on KZbin. You may be able to locate it yourself. Cheers.

As an American living abroad and knows with people in embassy I can say that having a military base where we are can be helpful. Not only because the little stores and towns remind us of home but because it grants you a special rank when abroad. Like when a corrupt cop pulls you over and demands money and you flash an embassy card then you’re on your way.

Jaandar Khan: What? Makes no sense at all. I think people get confused between winning a war but losing the objective. One small unit took out around 50% of the taliban within a couple months. The rest scattered across the border and was HIDING till we recently pulled out. Just like when people talk about Vietnam war they talk as if the US troops were being overrun and lost. The US never lost a battle in Vietnam and had a kill ratio of around 60+\1 but they lost the objective because the VC hid till we were pulling out. Plus our generals at the time (like today) were and are some of the worse this country ever had. It’s even worse today.

47-year-old black woman in America…my father did two tours in Germany, one tour in South Korea. South Korea was before me, but I attended kindergarten at Katterbach Army Base in Ansbach, Germany. I attended 4th, 5th, and 6th grades at the Strasberg Kaserne, and started 7th grade at Baumholder American High School. I loved living in Idar-Oberstein, and I loved the locals who were involved in my very young life in Ansbach. These people had so much respect and reverence for my family and I. Military family culture abroad was very much a collectivist culture and each time we returned to the U.S. I just didn’t fit, and it didn’t matter how many years in the U.S. I got under my belt, I never fit. And then I got violated, my children were violated. The American government refused to uphold the law and constitution regarding me and my children’s rights. The only institution to offer me an explanation (not justice, not protection, not safety) was the FBI. I was told these things happen sometimes, and that they would look into it and call me back. They never called back.

I thought it was funny how pompous both were about this. Here they are bitchin about our pressence everytwhere and all the tax dollars going to waste... ahhhhh hello you just said it, Johnny Harris. Our tax Dollars pay for this. If we are paying for all these bases and instalations and what not... gotta keep the lights on... gotta know where to send the bill... They know exactly how many the us has, they just want to see how much the public knows. Besides our military is not retarted, politicians yes but our military is on its game. Foolish to think otherwise. TRUMP was the first president who didn't start or send our boys into war. yet he maintained The military presence around the world. you see its important for us military presence around the world because of shit heads like china and the concentration camps they have, or all the genocide conflicts we've tried to stop. Some one like trump was maintaining the peace around the world, by letting China, the leading super power next to us, know we are not going to take your shinanigans. stop screwing over the rest of the world and your own people

USA is exceptional. Before WW2 we (the Hungarians) tried to join the Allies but the USA told us they don't want to upset the Germans. After WW2 the USA told us if we pay a bunch of money they make sure Hungary will be a democracy. We paid the money and they left the country leaving it for the Soviet Union. :) Also in 1956 they promissed support if we rebell against the Russians, we did it and they took over Suez, the americans knew Russia can't intervene in Suez if they have to intervene in Hungary. You have to love them, they are just so dishonest and sometimes evil while they preach about freedom and democracy.
