Native Americans prefer to be referred to by their specific tribal name, whenever possible. When referred to collelctively, they prefer Indigenous Americans. The derogatory name used was Redskin, due to their reddish brown skin. I'm descended from a Cherokee woman in Oklahoma married to a Scottish ancestor, and from a baby from an unidentified tribal name in Missouri, found and adopted by my Scottish ancestors.
