The US Navy wants to build thousands of drones to counter China. Nobody wants to build them.

The US Navy is seeking contractors to build thousands of low-cost unmanned drones to counter China's dominance in these technologies. But the military-industrial complex is committed to continue the focus on large, high-cost ships and submarines.
Despite the Navy's public insistence that unmanned drones and submersibles are a priority, it has made few capital commitments, especially long-term, to attract interest from shipbuilders. What's more, legacy shipbuilders for the Navy strongly prefer to make weapons systems according to the models that exist now, given profit margins and lack of capacity.

China peobably has millions of drones and the Chinese drones are way better and cheaper. China's DJI is the world largest producer of commercial drones and supplies 70% of these drones to the world. China Chongqing motor bike manufacturer can shift into Drone factory at the production rate of 1 million drones per year in war time. And that is only based on its current production rate; such number can be increased to 2 millions/y by working 24/7, and expanding its unused facilities.

This is (something like) what I'm always saying! It seems obvious that in China there's co-ordination in advance for war production! I bet they have long since decided what they're going to do when the time comes, in detail, and the plans are probably kept up to date. This Sputnik moment is different. China is sole superpower in manufacturing. Nobody can out manufacture China. They have the entire supply chain. The reason China is not building hundreds of warships is because they don’t want their ship building relying solely on military spending like US did. Basically US ship building and steel industries went out of business when there were no more government military spending. China wants to build ships for economic growth and dual use. The goal is to build enough warships to defend but avoid over expanding. This way they can build newer warships constantly to replace older warships with newer and better warships.

@@cool-eye3674 No problem. Just use Chinese chips and batteries which are far better. They can be debugged to eliminate back-channels and spywares. The user manuals? Even less of a problem. No user manuals now. An AI algo could be used to communicate/speak and exhibit in any language. Even explain in simple English for the slow-minded.😁

@@user-nz8wm2ct4n Too late. They may have banned DJI first, but now the Chinese government are controlling the export of 'strategic materials/products' to unfriendly foreigners. Even if the US government were to beg them to 'recouple', they would likely think twice. Trust once lost would take a long time to rebuild.

Amid a public relations fan-fair, China introduced a new aircraft carrier. I suspect that it was just for show to set the US off on a ship building spree. This is old established technology and the carrier and the fighter jets that it carries are obsolete. I suspect that China is investing their energies in AI piloted drones that be launched in a synchronized swarm in addition to public relations traps for the US to step into. The most expensive and irreplaceable element in a jet fighter is the human pilot. In the end, when the US is gone, Taiwan will rejoin China because China will make it an attractive proposition. A sea-land invasion is "so old world"

So US military spending is 10x of Russia's. Given the US's military track record against the Houthis, the Afghans, the Vietnamese, the North Koreans, it would be tough to argue we're getting our money's worth. What I'm really wondering is what the Chinese are getting for their military spending. They don't seem to be a wasteful people.

China, Russia, Iran and NK are a defacto military alliance, 3 of the 4 have nuclear weapons and all have great military industrial capacity. The reason being is their government control, at an instant they can produce military equipment and ammunition that is cheaper and competent on the battlefield if war escalates. The US military can no longer rely on accuracy and better performing equipment if they are being destroyed by the sheer volume of drones and artillery, ships and missiles. The US MIC cannot compete, they just don't have enough capacity.

"Rely on accuracy and better performing? " That's an oxymoron with the US military.... Accuracy? They can't even shoot down a balloon in the first shot using the so-called the best missile in the world.... Better performing? Just look at F35, never go to war but fall a lot....

Iran may have nuclear weapons, and should be treated as such. Having strong industrial base means that they don't need government control - they can pivot quickly simply by virtue of knowing how to build things efficiently.

That is a big mistake to make as you don’t compete on something where China has a distinct comparative advantage over the USA in this area, given that China can out manufacture weaponized drones in larger qualities, more cheaply, more advance technically, integrated with satellite-enabled real-time services, and embedded with anti-disruptive software.
