The real kick in the nuts to our enemies is the fact this plane can fly out of the US mainland, hit their targets anywhere in the world, and fly back while only needing refueling on the return trip. That means no mid-air refueling enroute with tankers giving positions away prior to bombing runs. Terrifying. Effective.

@davidpryor3933 Obviously. Doing tests on a computer is never going to replace an actual test pilot flying a place and pushing it beyond what’s supposed to be possible. So sure, there’s better bombers out there waiting to be flown and approved for regular operations. And different missions will call for different aircraft as well as different load outs for that specific mission. But to make it sound like it’s not really useful just because you’ve read or heard “there’s better out there” is a ridiculous statement that doesn’t specify anything that you speak of. We may never get 100 of these. But if we got 2…you know how many more we have then anyone else out there? We’ll get what we get of the Raiders, then we’ll get something even more advanced one day also. I'm pretty sure that this is the newest integration of the next-generation fighter. We know that fighters usually have a combat range of five or six hundred miles, well in the future the air force is going to need a combat radius in the thousands of miles. You can't do that with a small fighter anymore with current technology. And with the new upcoming airforce hypersonic missiles this will be able to get in an attack air, sea or ground target's while remaining very low observable. The idea is not to replace the b-52's payload capacity, or the b-1b speed, but something else entirely. For every one of these I see 4 or 6 drones that look like this, have the same range and speed, but maybe with different capacities. Some equipped for refueling some for air-to-air some for air-to-ground. An air-to-air will not be dog fighting as in the past. Now I know people have said that in the past and were proven wrong, but with the upcoming air-to-air missiles that the Air Force is working on, will be able to take them out long before they even see us. You can't strike deep into Asia for instance with fa-18 or f35s. Any type of air refueling over that area would be suicide. I think we might see a new age of the fighter/bomber. That's what I believe.

What we've seen just might be a mockup. I have a theory (that I've heard others have also) that it might be capable of carrying a large number of long range radar guided air-to-air missiles. "But, the B-21 doesn't have a radar!!" you might say. True. But, it wouldn't rely on its own radar, but that of F-35s that it would work in tandum with. The F-35s would fly deep into the theater of combat and mark airborne targets (other fighters, bombers, cruise missiles, drones) and the B-21, would orbit just outside of the theater of combat and launch missiles to destroy those targets. The F-35s would use their own missiles simply for self defense. The B-21s, with their already tiny radar signatures, would be practically invisible as they would be distant from the heat of combat. Loyal wingman drones could fly along side the B-21s, whether in this imagined role or in its strategic bomber role to provide air defense and even act as decoys to ward off attacks on the bombers.
@kathrynck Жыл бұрын
I'd tend to think it would have an AESA/PESA dual mode radar. BUT... the degree of stealth involved is much tighter than on the F-22 or F-35 (or even the B-2), so they may have done away with having any array at all for RCS reasons. Thermal is an option, and purely passive. And I'm sure it has extensive passive antennas, and probably the best ELINT ever flown, which could approach something like the awareness of a PESA. You don't need radar lock to shoot an AIM-120C or D. "Internal bays" changed all that. A missile in an internal weapons bay can only see the front of the weapons bay. They fire on a synthetic "VR-like" imaginary sense of direction, and are just told where to go to find their target. What makes the F-35 a monster, is that it can target anything around it (in 360 degrees) with EOTS, and send gift packages without even turning on a target (though there's more range if facing the right way). I'm sure they wouldn't want a B-21 in close enough proximity to enemy aircraft to use an AIM-120 though. But maybe an AIM-260. And in a bomber role, it could use either of those 'defensively'. The B-21 has a LOT more range than an F-35 or loyal wingman though. There was rumors of an expendable escort drone designed to keep up with the extreme range of the B-21. But I don't know how valid those rumors are. It should be large enough, and have enough powerplant to operate an airborne laser as well. Just another option. But yeah, it could play quarterback for F-35's in a more 'local' theater. More likely I think the USAF wants to use F-15EX's for that though. There's several interesting possibilities. Even a stealth refueling plane. Nuclear deterrence will get the pick of litter though. I wouldn't expect more novel roles until late in production when there's plenty to go around. Assuming it gets that far financially.
@dritzzdarkwood4727 Жыл бұрын
@@kathrynck Thanks for the input. How far would you speculate DoD has gone with active laser defense in terms of range and usability?
@kathrynck Жыл бұрын
@@dritzzdarkwood4727 Just realized I didn't directly address "range" really. In fog or clouds, it's about as far as you can throw the laser. In space, it's thousands or millions of miles. Most other places, it's in between. Shooting straight up goes into thinner air fast. You could shoot a laser at satellites. Shooting more horizontally at low altitude... it wouldn't go very far though. You know how you can casually look directly at the sunset, but you'd go blind staring at the midday sun on a clear day? same principal. I would think they'd always have at least as much range as whatever the local airport is defining as the rated weather 'visibility' distance. On a particularly clear day, more, BVR. From a U-2 at 80,000 ft, quite a bit more. I wouldn't fire one with rain drops on the outer lens though. They'll never replace existing weapons/counter-weapons systems. But they'll likely exist alongside them. All this applies much less to microwave lasers though.

The B-52 would not survive in today's combat environment. It was designed in the forties to carry lots of 500 lb bombs. Sure over the years it's been upgraded and it can carry a lot more now but it's still very vulnerable. B-1b is less so but my guess is it's probably getting very expensive to operate after these years. And the nuclear option was taken out do the treaty's. I suspect that the b21 will be even more than the b2.
@kathrynck Жыл бұрын
I did a math, assuming the beefy security guy standing in front of it was around 6 feet tall. Allowing for a little foreground/background perspective, it's between 100 and 110 ft wingspan. So it is considerably smaller than the B-2's 172 ft wingspan. It's rumored to have one rotary launcher instead of the B-2's two rotary launchers. Range is similar though. And RCS/heat signatures should be significantly reduced compared to the B-2 (which is itself the most stealthy aircraft flying). This can be seen as a "Less of your eggs in one basket" approach.

100 would be a lot if they were as big as the B-2/B-21/B-52. But it is considerably smaller. With one rotary launcher instead of the B-2's two launchers, you could consider it to be similar to having 50 B-2's, which can each be in two places at once, and/or be half-lost in combat. Range is supposedly similar to the B-2. It's a 'less eggs in one basket' approach, and even better stealth as a result. But it does mean that only 100 of them is not a huge amount of bomber fleet payload. Just a "that much harder to stop" payload.

If they are only gonna buy a token amount, then it cannot replace all the other bombers. I'd say the costs are out of this world!

very cool.. at first glance I just assumed it was a suped up B2 a few months ago. kinda like the stealth F15x.... it's a f15 with black paint.... seriously!?... I'm curious to know what the B21 power is like... and max payload
@kathrynck Жыл бұрын
Around 90,000-100,000 lbs max thrust, maybe less. 1 rotary launcher, so 50% of a B-2's payload. Range is similar to the B-2 though. It's smaller. "less eggs in one basket" ...and that much harder to detect. There's pros & cons to that, but they'll need ALL100 of them to have a meaningful fleet payload capacity.

Well the propulsion system isnt exactly classified...its using (2) F-135 engines.
@kathrynck Жыл бұрын
I'm sure they're modified for higher bypass, and likely re-designated. Much like the F135 engine is derived from the F119. But yeah, it's designed around having 2 of those. But it could possibly have the GE XA100 engine (or a derivative) as standard when produced. What's very secretive though, is the geometry of the exhaust.

It's a stunning aircraft, but a question. Why reveal such a brand-new, top secret, and vitally important military asset for the whole world to see? For our potential enemies, even if much of the plane's design is still classified, the fact it exists means they'll know to look out for it and will likely do more intensive spying to see behind the curtain.

TIL that it was named after the Doolittle Raiders and not the Cylon Raiders. I have to be forgiven though because the F-16 is called the Viper.
