In your example of the imperfect, you began by identifying a period, "Quand j'étais jeune". But if I want to use it to say someone used to be this or that, or used to do this or that, is it necessary to name a period? For instance, "That man used to smoke a lot", could I say simply "Cet homme fumait beaucoup", without a time reference?
