Einstein is NOT responsible for the US technological superiority over the USSR. He was an important figure in the Manhattan Project, but that only resulted in Nuclear weapons and reactors. Einstein had very little to do with advances in mechanical engineering, material science, aviation, any other field not related to nuclear research. The most prominent weapon other than the atomic bomb he had direct influence on would be the nuclear powered super-carrier, which could be be powered by traditional diesel engines.

Einstein had nothing to do with the Manhattan Project itself, let alone the overall Atomic Bomb Project (which is far more than the "Manhattan Project"). Even for those professionals who know Einstein's role in Physics and the Atomic Bomb specifically is exaggerated, they overstate Einstein's ability to lobby Roosevelt (he was hardly the only one, and probably not a pivotal voice in FDR's decision-making). And in terms of the actual "Scientific" and "Engineering" development of the Atomic Bomb itself, Einstein is absolutely irrelevant. Even if you assume that Einstein had a hand in convincing Roosevelt to more heavily fund a major Atomic Bomb Project (who's foundation already existed in the USA), it's obviously Roosevelt who is the pivotal decision maker of the Atomic Bomb, not Einstein. Many people today seem unaware of the actual Projects and Developments of the overall Atomic Bomb Project, which also included the Uranium processing, the development of Electronics and Detonators, Computer programming and analysis, aeronautical design and the B-29, etc, - the origins and developments of these all PREDATE the "Manhattan District", which then became the "Manhattan Project". People like Colonel James Marshall, Vannevar Bush, James Conant, etc, were FAR more important to the overall Atomic Bomb Project than Einstein ever was. If you want the most important "Scientist" in the entire Bomb Project or "Manhattan Project"? That would obviously be Enrico Fermi (More on him later, since people are confused about the "Science" part). If you want to know the most important Man in the Research and Development of the entire Bomb Project - the Project Manager who knew the most of anything about everything (from Uranium processing, to B-29 aircraft manufacture and delivery to detonation at Los Alamos, right down to the construction of plumbing and waterworks for concentrations of tens of thousands of engineers, technicians, workers, administrators, etc)? That would obviously be General Leslie Groves (too many ignorami don't know what it takes to create, expand, and maintain a large Engineering Project, let alone appreciate the enormity of being the Project Manager of anything like the Atomic Bomb Project). If you want to know the most important Man responsible for the overall Bomb Project? I would have to say (in spite of myself), Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Remember: the development of the Atomic Bomb Project, in the larger scheme of things, has everything to do with the standardization of measurements and instrumentation revolution in the USA that are the basis of its Material Engineering - it is the basis for any advances in Physics (applied, practical or theoretical) - because ultimately, new developments are based on new methods of experimentation and observation, creating tighter tolerances and new techniques of discriminating between "State A" from "State B". The advances that led to the Atomic Bomb began in the 1920s, but ALSO led to everything from silicon purification of 99.999 wt% (which gave birth to the Information Age which arguably began in the 1930s and made America the World Leader of Semiconductors and Electronics) to the Systems and Control Engineering revolution of Naval Weapons Research (Mk 33 to Mk 38, the first modern Robots, the advent of which is ultimately about Signals Processing and Stability Analysis), right up to the components for Fermi's detonators in developing the atomic bombs (as well as Bridge detonators in terms of the symmetric shockwave formation in the implosion device). The PHENOMENON that is now attributed to "Fission", was OBSERVED long before Otto Hahn's experiments. It's just that people didn't "agree" on the THEORY of why it was happening (there were many theories, including Fermi's who arguably accomplished "Fission" BEFORE Hahn, Hahn's theory of "Fission" was only one of the POST HOC EXPLANATIONS for it). But here's the key point most people don't seem to understand: The THEORY did NOT matter. Whether you used the Hahn's Fission theory or Fermi's Slow-Neutron theory (they're actually considered both right in their regard), it's like arguing the difference between Electricity's Hole-Current theory and the contrarian Electron-Current Theory: if you're building an electrical circuit, BOTH WORK - the explanatory theory is NOT the important part in this application, ONLY the PRACTICAL CONCLUSIONS, which results in follow-on experiments and practical engineering results. And Fermi's experiments and advancements in Atomic Bomb making were UNAFFECTED by Einstein or even Hahn's hypothesis (arguably, they only muddied the waters). One thing is indisputable: Fermi would have successfully built the Atomic Bomb regardless of Einstein's and Hahn's Theories (unlike so many "Physicists", Fermi was principally an ENGINEER, and therefore an "Experimental Physicist" of the hard sciences). The main problem of the atomic bomb was to make this natural phenomenon into more than just a "lab experiment under tightly controlled conditions", and instead make it into a "Deliverable Weapon" which could be deployed in the Real-World's most unforgiving environment and uncontrolled conditions - War. Read that last sentence, because that is one of the KEYS to understanding the "Atomic Bomb Project", of which the "Manhattan Project" is actually only a very small piece (and arguably, NOT the most important piece). Fermi's experiments literally overturned and "rewrote" many of the theories, calculations, underlying assumptions, etc, of the rest of the Manhattan Project's theoretical "scientists" - For example, Bethe didn't predict or calculate the Atomic Bomb's critical mass and yield. Fermi conducted the reactor experiments and got the authoritative results FIRST - and THEN with Fermi's reactor experimental "Answers" in Bethe's hand, Bethe simply RE-wrote his formulae around Fermi's given "Answers" AFTERWARDS (it's ridiculous how some people think Scientific endeavors should work the other way around, in reverse). This is how Physics SHOULD be: observed measurements and experiments DICTATE theoretical Physics, NOT the other way around. (doing it the other way around leads to the Fraud that is the current "Pandemic", "Peak Oil", "Global Cooling-Warming-Climate Change", etc, frauds we're up to our necks in right now). Again, Fermi was less interested in the "theory" used to POST HOC explain the results of his experiments - Fermi had his OWN theoretical framework, and they were driving him in the RIGHT direction, whereas others were all over the place because they were not "grounded" in practical engineering; they couldn't even understand how a simple ammeter was built, and how that effected measurements in controlled laboratory conditions, let alone uncontrolled real-world conditions, etc. Reiterating the more generally-understood example: if you use Hole-Current theory to design and build an electrical circuit, you'll succeed just as well as someone using the "contrarian" Electron-Current Theory in designing and building the same or similar electrical circuit. Fermi was, by far, the most important "Physicist" in the entire Bomb Project (An Engineering and Experimental professional, not a Theoretician)... ...but with that said, America would have succeeded in building the Atomic Bomb even without Fermi (and built it long before anybody else). To put it simply, for instance, America had plenty of Physicists who were interested in trying to build nuclear reactors - Fermi was simply chosen as the head of a VERY large pack. If not Fermi, America could have turned to his co-Engineer/Physicist partner Lawrence, for example. Make no mistake, Fermi was one of the ideal choices and likely expedited the Atomic Bomb's development by months. And it must be considered that more important than his engineering and scientific competency, was his independent personality, gravitas, and integrity within the Project, something that gets lost when people look historically is that they forget the practical dynamics of a team environment - Strength of Personality matters. But even Fermi could never do it alone; the Bomb Project was impossible even if he and thousands of American workers and scientists were magically transported to Germany, which at the time was the second-most advanced and capable civilization of the era. What was required of the Manhattan Project alone was tens of thousands (in the grand scheme of things, actually hundreds of thousands) of trained technicians, machinists, electricians, sewage workers, chemists, electrical engineers, etc, - of which Fermi de facto was already some of these, but not nearly the ONLY one required, because there are ALL KINDS of subsets of electrical engineers, technicians, machinists, etc, required....all of it having been developed and trained to high enough standards LONG BEFORE 1939... So there it is: America would have eventually gotten the Bomb - though possibly not in time to prevent the American Invasion of Japan without some key players like Fermi or Groves (except their seconds, thirds, and whatnot were also capable even if not as highly ranked or recognized). It is STILL a certainty that America would have gotten the Bomb first...and nobody else would be close until they got the "Answers" from America itself. Because whoever wanted to build nuclear reactors - to say nothing about a deliverable nuclear weapon and platform like the B-29 (They needed a pressurized cabin to protect the bomb's components and delivery for as long as possible, cork and air insulation could provide optimal conditions for only so long) - needed an ENORMOUS and ADVANCED industrial base to make it happen.
