I still remember the first time I saw this movie. My friend was so excited to show it to me, but when the movie opened, I turned to him and asked, “Is that Kevin Spacey? It sounds like Kevin Spacey. Is Kevin Spacey the bad guy?” He stared at me for a few seconds and said, “I should just turn this off right now.” He was crushed. 😂

When you watch this movie a second time you can see Kevin spacy thinking up his story, and looking at the coffee cup and stuff. He played it so well you don't catch it the first time, but definitely do the second time. Super subtle and brilliant performance. It's why he won the academy award for thus movie.

I worked on a film set in Montana in 2021, the lead actor was Gabriel Byrne, the guy who played Keaton. @@elcorado83 I thought about that, that they could be just using the legend or that someone else was Söze. However that burned survivor from the ship saw him and based on his description they had a sketch done. On the other hand we can't know how that man was positive that this was indeed Söze - considering there was another guy (Arturo Marques) who was supposed to be the only one that could identify him. So how could the hungarian gangster recognize him too then? Unless agent Cujan is wrong and this wasn't the only person who could identify him. I am getting a headache trying to figure it out.

Pro tip, he told the cop, who kaiser soze was, when talking about his old days in turkey. Explaining who kaiser soze was. He tells him some info no one could know. He tells the cop, he's supposed to be half German half Hungarian. It's in his name. Kaiser is German for leader or God. Soze is Hungarian for the same thing. He was also in the film American beauty, and Horrible bosses 1 and 2, with Jennifer Anniston! But in this movie here, it doesn't matter how much of his story is true, or fake. Because he's telling the whole thing, from his point of view, which is never a complete picture full truth anyway. He just made up things, he wanted to.
@toro5280
@toro5280 Ай бұрын
You are basically correct except for the meaning of his name. Kaiser means "emperor" in german and söze means "his word" in hungarian. So I guess he wanted it to mean something like "emperor of his words". Kint's nickname is "verbal" which means "relating to or in the form of words". I assume by choosing this moniker "the Emperor of his words" he sees himself as the Father of lies, the Master of deception - the devil. Which connects perfectly to him talking about the devil's greatest trick, or how do you shoot the devil, calling Söze the devil. And just like that, he's gone.

From the outset the clues that Verbal was Keyser were all there. He was the only one not arrested (he walked into the line up), The immunity (well spotted), and Keyser was one step ahead of the group at all times (inside information?), he was the only survivor of a suicide mission? and other more subtle clues (including visual clues within the film). Best to leave you to find them all with multiple watches. I often wonder how hard it would be to be undercover within the group as a cripple, without breaking cover. It was fun to watch you going through the emotions, especially in the reveal. I remember my first viewing feeling conflicted by the story being told. At one point telling myself that Verbal was Keyser and then dismissing it. I have watched this many times since then. The writing is a great piece of misdirection in that the clues are all there. The directing and editing are masterful, and the acting superb. The reveal on a par with "The Sixth Sense", this film is among my favorites for pure story telling. A joy to watch you watching then. Hoping you and yours are, and remain very well.

I've got and love this movie. But what's even better is seeing genuine reactions to this great piece of work! Specially hearing the Rob Squad sorting out and discussing the plot. And we know ' No that's not it ' And Thank You both for the big smile you have given me for every time I remember when you found out Les Grossman was Tom Cruise... just how the hell did you not clock that. Great Channel and Cheer's. 🇬🇧

My notes about The Usual Suspects How much of the story was true? Some parts can be pieced together by what was left behind after their 'adventures'. We know the roundup and NY lineup happened. We know the strike against the NY cops 'taxi service' happened, done by 5 men. We know that the drug dealer Saul was killed on the West Coast. We know that Fenster's body was found on the beach. We know that Edie worked on extradition papers for Marquez, who was on the boat and claimed to know what Söze looked like. And we know that almost everyone died at the harbor the night before Verbal's tale. All the stuff in between was just a story Verbal spun around various events that can be verified. There is probably a lot of truth in his spiel, but with different names. We know the 'lawyer named Kobayashi' person exists, but who is he really? We can assume that the Söze backstory was the real one. (Take a look at his face telling that story on a rewatch.) He really killed his family, then let the one guy go to tell the story, and start the legend. Then went after *everybody* associated with the gang that targeted his family. I like to discuss with my friends how 'Roger' played the long game. Verbal was a known con-artist in the criminal world. Based on how easily he made up a story from things he saw in that office, we know that he was probably very good at being a conman. He probably only allowed himself to be caught so he could spend time in prison and have a criminal record. He got to know at least one of the guys (Keaton, based on his tale) to have someone vouch for him in the heist with the cops after the phoney lineup and remain part of the group. He most likely set up the 'one time' run of the cop's 'taxi service' as he was ready with 'a plan to do it without killing anyone'. After you see the ending, you understand why Hockney looked surprised and McManus said "Strangest thing..." when they died. One of their group had turned on them. He went through all that trouble to kill Marquez personally, but I don't think he knew that there was a survivor from the boat, who told the cops what Söze looked like, thus making the whole thing moot. Everyone was supposed to die, and Verbal could slither away, possibly becoming Verbal again in the future, if needed. He's really going to have to go underground now. The Roger Verbal Kent persona is now no good. I think the thing that bothers me the most about the movie is that even though we were following the story of these 5 criminals, we came to care what happened to them, and were rooting for them to succeed. Then we find out that we don't even know this crew. We don't know if Keaton was trying to turn his life around, and just got caught up in this 'last job' or if he never turned from being a bad guy. Everything we learned about them and this caper was told by a unreliable narrator. All their conversations and reasons for doing things are now unknown to us.

A "fence" in criminal slang is someone who buys stolen goods from thieves because he has ways to sell them on legitimately. Naturally, he takes a margin between what he pays for the good and what he sells them for. It can also be used as a verb, e.g. "Fred's going to fence the stuff for us".

4:09 - That's actor Kevin Pollak, Jay. He was in the film "A Few Good Men" alongside Tom Cruise, and Demi Moore (which I believe you guys reacts to before). The other "usual suspects are: Benicio Del Toro from the film, Sicario. (He also plays 'The Collector" from The Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Infinity War. Also He is "DJ" in Star Wars Episode VIII, The Last Jedi). Gabriel Byrne from the film, Enemy of the State (which also stars Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Lisa Bonet, and Jon Voight). He's also in "Excalibur" (great film). Stephen Baldwin (one of the famous "Baldwin Brothers") from the movie, Posse (which also stars Mario Van Peebles, Blair Underwood, Pam Grier, Isaac Hayes, Big Daddy Kane, Tom 'Tiny' Lister, and Salli Richardson). And obviously Kevin Spacey, that you two already know from Se7en.

My gf back then was pissed that I figured out the twist early in the film. Still an enjoyable film even knowing the surprise twist at the end, though.
