Emma Hayes just won like her 8th WSL title and followed it up with a Gold Medal coaching a team she just took over. I would trust her tactical judgement more than I would yours. All the talk about how poorly our midfielders played, but most of the time they were effectively taken out of the game by the opposing teams. either going over or double and triple teaming both Lavelle and Horan, every time they had the ball. I would not say Horan had a good tournament, her passing was off as was her touch. Coffey did well patrolling the base of the midfield and helped the defense maintain their effectiveness. Albert came in and did what what was needed, tournament winning assist, and a game winning goal (if i recall correctly). All in all a huge improvement over the trash tactics of Andonovski, I would agree that there are improvements that need to be made, but 10 games into a new coaching staff, we only have good things to look forward to.

I am not the biggest fan of the USWNT midfield largely because there are more dynamic and influential players waiting for their chance to show what they can do. Rookie Croix Bethune is already in the mix (and rightly so) but it is a significant oversight by Emma Hayes that she has not already noticed the best Rookie in the world. Anyone who has not clocked how good the number one draft pick and the best player for the Utah Royles (leading in assists and goals) is, does not really know their football. Ally Sentnor, who is one of the best players (playing for the worst team) in the NWSL, will become thee stand-out USWNT player from the moment she gets her chance to shine. Yes even out-shinning the amazing Espresso girls who so brilliantly lead the attack. And Sentnor will not need time to adjust either. Like Lilly Yohanis, she will hit the ground running for her country the same way she has hit the ground running for her club. 20-year-old Ally Sentnor was easily the best player on the park in her debut game as a professional footballer (that's unheard of), scoring from the halfway line one of the goals of the season, just for good measure. When the world gets to see her play in the best national team (USWNT) and alongside some of the worlds best players. How about this for a bit of trivia? The three Expresso's scored three goals each (and weighed in with just as many assists) to get the USWNT to the finals. Rodmen scored the winner in the quarter-finals, Smith scored the winner in the semi-finals and Swanson scored the winner in the Final. They could not have spread the goas more evenly if they tried to. Now that's the best example I ever come across of a group of strikers that are right on song (forgetting the fact that they could all pass for real-life sisters all having black Dads and white Mums), lol.

Claire is overly negative. Brazil took a risk and played high intensity first half. No one can do that 90 minutes. Once we got to half time nil-nil, it thought we would win. To me, it was Sophie Smith that wasted several chances today. Our defense is excellent. And, BTW, Hope Solo is was not only the best femail USA GK, but likely the best ever in the world. It's not close.

330 minutes of shutout knockout football. an unbelievable scoresheet that testifies to the defense and the magnificent Naeher. Hayes' strategy was questioned and examined under microscopes but in the end she knew what made the US winners in the past was their mental toughness, a toughness forged playing teams that were technically better. When you win 1-0 in three knockout games in a row, you are defining that toughness.

Thanks, Claire, for some really incisive and cogent analysis and commentary. Given all of the talking head BS that normally comes out of popular sports media, It's a refreshing change to read some real commentary. I have to say that I thought Lindsay Horan was pretty terrible throughout most of this tournament. She seemed slow and tentative both on and off the ball, and made frequent errors with the placement and pace of her passes out of the midfield both on the attack and on the reset to the back line. I still think that Rose Lavelle is the most dynamic midfielder the US has seen in quite some time, and I have to hope that she remains healthy and that Emma Hayes learns how best to use Rose to break down low block defenses as well as to hasten the aerial transition through the middle of the field when teams take the kind of tact that Brazil did in this gold medal game.

8:05 That's not a penalty on Dunn. She run a strait line and got to where the ball is at the same time as the Brazilian The Brazilian was running slightly into Crystal, then she tripped Crystal unintentionally and Crystal ended up on top of the Brazilian from the calf up. It looked like something was intentional but if you look at the replay there was not space where Crystal's foot could have landed on the ground, she stepped instead on the heel of the Brazilian, but that happened after the Brazilian run into Crystal. No foul from either for either - No penalty. Kinda like when the sidelines official delayed lifting the flag in the 15th min when Brazil scored that offside goal. The Refereeing was a little inadequate but the USWNT benefited from no bad calls at all. We may find that there were calls for the USWNT that the Ref didn't call. The Result is %100 fair as the Smarter team won in spite of them having played 60 minutes more soccer and didn't benefit from any rotations whatsoever.

A couple observations: It’s so difficult to beat a really hot and balanced team like Brazil. This is the game we thought we’d face against Spain going into Olympics. Kudos on a victory against a stacked and super hot team. US has a sick defense/goal. Was incredible for past few years and continues. Difference from prior tournaments is US time of possession and offensive threat. In World Cup the other team pounded us relentlessly until we succumbed. And the most miraculous thing may be that we won gold with only 3 players who could consistently attack and score. Without Shaw and limited time for Jenna and croix, almost every sub on roster was truly a defensive-oriented player. That makes the achieving of gold even more remarkable. Imagine future with Shaw, Macario and lily in this mix! And finally, thank you Korbin Albert: game winning shot and game winning pass. Not bad. 🎉

Hello Claire. Well done USA and Emma Hayes. I said not to worry after the pre tournament warm up matches. As for no opponents like this, go watch the Chelsea v Manchester City games last year. Sometimes I go back to thinking NWSL still has a lot to learn from watching WSL, like WSL was in effect learning for the future from women's football in US when Emma came there before. If you do not believe me, watch Sam Mewis' channel. She has played in both countries. Also give Brazil some credit. They beat the World Champions in the semi final. They did not turn up to come second and let USA fulfill some destiny. Lastly, Emma watched the Finalissima between her beloved England and Brazil. Brazil nearly won by their ability to just turn on the style. Anyone who watched their teams, men and women, knows they are unpredictable. Emma would not be unprepared, but you cannot be sure which Brazil turns up on a given day.

Wouldn't the fact that no changes to the midfield was made prove that your perspective about it is inaccurate? It's obvious Rose Lavelle was not fit to play from some injury that Emma Hayes purposely did not reveal and Rose was placed on the bench to fool the opposition that she might be subbed in. Just the threat or no threat of Rose could change Brazil's strategy.

I agree Brazil looked the better team in the first half. There was a complete shift in both teams attitudes in the second half. USA came out fighting and confident. I think their ability to manage the outcome is about threat. It's a lot to manage with Fox and Rodman down one wing and Crystal and Mal on the other. Then there's a shaky midfield which still manages to make inroads. Let's face it, despite a weaker midfield you can hardly call Albert, Horan and Coffey easy. When you add in a really cohesive defence, it's just a lot to come up against for that length of time. I think the Brazilian coach was working with a very physically diminished group. Its like they'd peaked against Spain. As mentioned by so many it really is a tournament of management and fortune.

Making sense of what doesn't seem to make sense. If you are the coach, and your players have player 60 minutes more than the opponent, you will consider other aspects of the game such as, FLIPPING THE TABLE ON BRAZIL. In the prior 5 games, the two teams possession percentage was the opposite of today. Before the USWNT possession was %60 - Brazil %40 Today the USWN possession was %40 - Brazil %60 Some of today's stats were not luck or random, they may have been pre-designed. If you're the coach and you can protect your team with a false sense of inferiority or let the Brazil feel superior (of course you will take a chance) if that can make Brazil waste lots of energy, you will think if you're Emma Hayes that's good because at the end of the game we will be closer to one another in the energy reserves. I think Brazil got suckered into a game plan that wasn't going to work out for them, and felt good about seeing the confetti early on. That basically gave us about 20 min or 30 of time to gage them from the side line or basically tune our players in more towards getting the job done with the little energy we had in the reserves. It's a dissent idea that can give a smarter team 50/50 chance which is better than give Brazil a chance to sit back to surprise us where we aren't stronger which is having to run miles from the forward towards the back to stop their counter attacks. The way they beat Spain is they run a lot from the midfield to the final third and took full advantage of Spain's weak defense and their weak goalie. Brazil could not do that to us today as we know them better than they know themselves We are on a 6 game winning streak against Brazil counting friendlies SheBelieves and Gold Cup. We beat Brazil a number of different way, today game plan will be used again against them when necessary. We were more fatigued as we played 60 minutes more than them, 30 in the QF and 30 in the SF. It doesn't matter what they did before the final, what matters is how we can best beat them. We won the Gold

Lavelle had a good tournament?! She was supposed to be our main playmaker and created one chance all tournament. That’s pathetically bad.
@heppolo

@@AlexJaneson she played a mediocre tournament, but big chances creation is a slightly flawed stat - if an attacker/winger decides to not shoot or shoots poorly after a good forward through ball it doesn't register as a big chance. For instance, if Korbin's past was received by Soph instead of Mal it would have been offside and not a big chance even though the pass is the same. So yes, Rose played underwhelming, she clearly lost a step in terms of her instinct and decision-making.

I am not the biggest fan of the USWNT midfield largely because more dynamic and influential players are waiting for their chance to show what they can do. Girma, Fox, Rodman, Smith and Swanson to name but a few, then and only then will the world agree with me and see what I see.

I think you made some great points with fair analysis, but being critical of the USWNT team right after they won the gold medal is not exactly in fashion, will be a good idea to wait at least a few days. Imo, they're a better team than Brazil, particularly they can finished their chance in this game; and also, they have more belief than Brazil, if not just from their performance throughout the tournament, that in itself, is a big thing for the final game result.

a tough physical games --- not managed very well ---- you're just wrong; opinionated but wrong. of course the midfield and the corners + setpieces are works not even in progress ... YET. oh well, lots of learnings by both Hayes w/ USWNT as well as yourself. ---- i'll keep checking in with you but your negative comments are more self-congratulatory than insightul.

I call Horan prime rib because she runs like she's full of it. Its time to get a new captain. She was a huge liability. With Jaedyn Shaw coming up and Albert proving herself there just isn't a spot for her and Coffey anymore.

Totally agree with your take. The midfield is still the issue and other than the outcome this was far from a great game. We celebrate the gold cause these players, this team and organization, deserve every ounce of the praise and honor to go with their championship. It will be interesting to see if any changes occur in the current four friendlies on the schedule this year. If not, January camp should be prime for experimentation.

Most experts were saying it would be a win for the USWNT to medal. They win gold and it feels like you're being over critical even though I agree the midfield specifically Horan was not great. Speaking of fouls not getting called, that forearm shiver to Horan's head should've easily been a yellow card

The entire tournament was ugly soccer. It wasn’t the beautiful game. Australia, Spain, Germany, all had horrible to okay play. Brazil was quick and technical the first half but disappeared in the second half. And so, Claire, you can’t keep on saying you are surprised that Brazil didn’t win but Brazil didn’t play the second half like the first.

So many excuses why Germany Australia, and Brazil didn't beat USA, you got it wrong most of tournament and you are getting it wrong now, we won. Stop hating and admit your mistakes, it's not a good look and we all can see it.

And on another note, I am not the biggest fan of the USWNT midfield largely because more dynamic and influential players are waiting for their chance to show what they can do. Rookie Croix Bethune is already in the mix (and rightly so) but it is a significant oversight by Emma Hayes that she has not already noticed the best Rookie in the world. Yes even out-shinning the amazing Espresso girls who so brilliantly lead the attack. And Sentnor will not need time to adjust either. Like Lilly Yohanis, she will hit the ground running for her country the same way she has hit the ground running for her club. Corbin Albert, like Ally Sentnor, is in her first season as a professional. Check out both their highlight reels and see for yourself who is the more impressive of the two. Sentnor can dribble like Rodman, shoot like Sophia Smith and high press like Lynn Williams. Her head is always on the swivel. She does not show nerves, her eyes are always focused on the game so her mind does not drift. In her debut game as a professional footballer, 20-year-old Ally Sentnor was easily the best player on the park (that's unheard of), running and scoring from the halfway line one of the goals of the season, just for good measure (check it out). When the world gets to see her play in the best national team (USWNT) and alongside some of the worlds best players.
