In our latest Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim video we delve into Azura.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

Azura being a prince regretful for not taking part in the creation of Mundus was an interesting idea. It would make an interesting twist on her depiction, with a sun and a moon in hand. The moon being Lorkhan, the creator (at least the one initiating the process) of Mundus, and the sun being Magnus, the architect of the creation. She is holding them up, perhaps revering their work and creation, despite not taking part in it. She decided to hold on to her power instead of investing it in the world she seem to take so much interest in. Perhaps she wants to be loved and revered like the ones who created it, and so reaches out to mortals for recognition. After all, those two creators are no longer there to receive the love and recognition the mortals have for them, one fleeing to Atherius and the other killed by the other Aedra. It goes hand in hand with her sphere of Vanity & Egotism to want to pick up where they left off and be the "living god" to oversee the creation and receive the affections of the mortals in it. And perhaps this is exactly why she dislikes that the Tribunal used the power of the creator to become "living gods" themselves. Not only could they take away from her worship, but they gained their position from the power of the god of creation. The creation she didn't partake in. Of course she would see that as an insult.

They thought that Azura preferred being worshipped by people who wanted to worship her, unlike the aedra who were/are worshipped just because it was a social/cultural obligation. The commenter also said that this may be why she is so spiteful to the people who betrayed her.

@@Anon-fd8ui everything you said is wrong The 3 people didn't just do some small thing wrong, they betrayed their god, murdered her champion, their friend/lover and ruler, set themselves up as false gods by profane desecration of the heart of a true god. Azura turned their skin ashen not as a punishment, before the Dunmer were Dunmer they were Chimer, they had golden skin like their cousins the Altmer, she turned their skin ashen to reflect her own to always remind the Chinmer people of their true god. The ones that caused the devastation to Vvardenfell and Morrowind were Dagoth Ur and the tribunal, specifically Vivec. Dagoth Ur was responsible for the ash storms and the blight of Corpus disease, Vivec was the one who delibrately tied Baar Dau remaining suspended above the city of Vivec to the dunmer peoples continuous love and worship of him so if they ever stopped it would fall, and dont try anything like well Vivec stopped it saving the people in the first place because the reason Sheogorath hurled it at Vivec city in the first place is because of the disrespect the tribunal paid him. Baar Dau falling from the sky is what caused the eruption of red mountain.

Today, I had an almost genuine religious moment with Azura through my character. I had just enrolled at the college of Winterhold, and after the first class with Tolfdir, my character took a break to visit the grounds. He wandered up to the roof of the Hall of Attainment, and suddenly, out of the dusk sky, for the first time ever I spotted the Shrine of Azura from the roof of the college. I have been playing this game on and off for nearly 10 years, and I had never noticed that you could see the shrine from the college roof. There and then, my character decided he had to visit that giant statue. I blew off Sarthaal for a bit and ran him over to the statue, (without fast-traveling to the nearby cave, since it felt like he had to make the pilgrimage honestly) and when he arrived, he was greeted by the priestess, who told him she had foreseen his coming long before his birth. Never in my 12 years of playing Elder Scrolls games have I had a more immersive moment than this. For the entirety of the side-quest, I was completely immersed into my character's perspective, sharing in his sense of wonder, his perseverance in reaching the statue, and his determination to retrieve the star. When Azura spoke to him, I felt like she was speaking directly to me. Truly amazing organic storytelling right there! TLDR: I saw Azura's statue from the college for the first time and was transported back to 2011, when Skyrim was the most mind-blowing game I had ever seen.

I disagree about one thing: Azura would not have participated in creation even despite her desire for love. It is in fact because of it that she did not do it. In the end the Aedra, the Divines, expect worship and devotion because of their part in creation, while labeling Daedra worshipers as always and automatically evil (even in the rare cases when this is not true), and that is not how Azura works. She wants the devotion to be absolute, but also true. She wants people to come to her not out of obligation, but genuine desire TO be with her. So when she is betrayed, her wrath is all the more potent (if sometimes overblown or undeserved).

I wouldn't say Daedra worshipers are commonly evil. You have to keep in mind that most of them are painted that way BECAUSE of the Aedric pantheon and how mortals have twisted the meaning. Asura and Nocturnal aren't evil. I've never seen either do anything against mortals unprovoked. Sure Nocturnal is the patron of Thieves but calling thievery "evil" seems a bit our of proportion. Immoral sure, but immoral and "evil" are two different things. Similarly you have Miridia who is commanding but definitely seems to be on the good side of the spectrum. We don't really see her followers doing anything evil. And I would say Hermas Mora is about a 50/50. Hes willing to do ANYTHING to collect more knowledge. He more ignores morality all together. Same with Malacath. He doesn't really hurt anyone unless they challenge something he cares about. For example hurting the Orcs, Ogres or various other creatures he is the patron of. Then we have Sheogorath who is... well just insane. The problem is most of the time we see daedra worship is associated with Mehrunes Dagon and Molag Bal. Who are two very aggressive princes.

I've always loved Azura. There are some interesting aspects to basically every Daedra in some way, but Azura is the one Prince that actually cares for her loyal followers, and you very well may be able to even experience her love first hand seeing as she's interactive with mortals unlike the Aedra. To me she is the chief Daedric Prince. She just seems to have the most involvement with mortals, and she is like the wise mind of the Daedra. Her character is so complex and mysterious, I want to see more of her in ES6. I believe why her reactions and curses are so drastic when she is betrayed is because when people worship/love her they do so genuinely, she doesn’t obligate to worship her, she prefers when people do it out of their own will. LoooooL many religion has this figurines. Someone says he see some balance inside Azura, someone said its like a Yin-Yang of elder scrolls. Taoism say "if you weaken something, ot will be strong, and if you strenghten something, it will be weak". Its like when you want something so much and will never happen. After a heavy push, you can await only for a repush. I think this is what happening around. I heard a phylosopher who said about kids, "that is like a baloon, if you just say something to your kid, he will do, like when you just push a baloon, then it will be reformed, but if you constantly push your finger, it will not accept and start to push to the opposite way out. Fun idea: Azura's view of mortals is based on some of the Valar from Tolkien stories (lord of the rings, the hobbit, the silmarillion etc.) In that the Valar actually respect humans and elves because they see mortality as a special gift, due to mortals often being very ambitious in comparison to the usually very complacent immortals. Azura's view is what causes her to care about her followers, in comparison to how the other daedric princes see mortals as weak playthings. This same view is also a large part of why she got so angry at the tribunal and the dwemer, to her using the heart of lorkhan to become immortal was effectively throwing away the most precious gift they previously had. Chances are Azura is based Tolkien's stories the same way Hermeius Mora is based on Lovecraft's.

Azura's sphere of dawn and dusk isn't literal, as this was here sphere before there was a dawn and dusk in the mundus. She is simply the TES version of yin and yang.

The way I see it is that Azura is the daedric prince of concepts like wabi-sabi and the interplay of light and dark, good and evil, pleasant and miserable. There is potentially unforgettable beauty in their dance, equal parts beautiful and tragic, wonderful and terrible. Existential beauty, perhaps? Part of her sphere seems to be the acceptance, maybe even reverence of these imperfections for what they are. What was once unique and beautiful in its own right begins to lose its identity in trying to become ideal -- something she seems to despise. Her ultimate motivations seem to be laid out in Khajiiti myth, as she was not only Fadomai's daughter but her closest confidant, and appears to hold the dreams and hopes of her mother in high regard in spite of her rivalry with Nirni. Perhaps in hearing her mother speak of love, war, unrealized hopes and dreams on her deathbed, Azurah came to appreciate all too late these unrealized futures that her mother had envisioned, no matter how much they made her ache and cry. She came to love and care for it all in hearing her mother speak so lovingly of Nirni's future children and grandchildren -- their names, their imagined (foreseen?) triumphs and tragedies. As Azurah wept, she consciously or subconsciously began to build the lunar lattice around Nirni -- the legacy that Fadomai loved so much -- to protect her and her grandchildren -- and many of her later actions could be attributed to the same motive, even though it ultimately pushed Fadomai in her final resting place in the Void from her. She had resolved that she would love and protect creation, warts and all -- but possibly only for Fadomai's sake. In essence, she likely sees herself as the exclusive keeper of Fadomai's legacy -- the one with the last say on what that entails -- and any who encroach on that vision or scorn her authority on it tend to get on her bad side pretty quickly. Maybe Azurah is even bitter that she was never so beloved by her mother in life as Nirni and this manifests in her vanity, wanting to be loved by all who follow her. She may not even truly love Nirni or her children, but in some way she has accepted her admittedly somewhat tragic role and she expects this of her followers as well -- if you cannot fully accept others, at least accept yourself and see the beauty in it, warts and all. It's no wonder then that she helped lead the Chimer from Summerset, and could also be compared to Malacath in that regard. The Tribunal's later theft of power from the Heart of Lorkhan is then betraying not only Azura in usurping her power over the Chimer but adding insult to injury in going directly against Padomay's legacy by casting off their imperfections (mortality, etc.) in pursuit of the ideal. Add to that how Lorkhan is likely a very sore subject for Azura given that it could be said that he was the one who doomed her mother and took her away from her... it was a very bad idea to claim power from such a thing when betraying her in nearly the same breath, and how she is likely responsible for the disappearance of the Dwemer in also toying with his Heart. Azura is wise but cruel -- and she may only have that wisdom thanks to the hopes and dreams that Nirni shared on her deathbed. Hers is the acceptance and encouragement of the imperfect, helping us to venerate the dreamily-distant, reflected light and finding it far more beautiful and accessible than its source.

With Azura's Prophecy, I usually conceptualize that Azura set one of my Dragonborns on her destiny. A studious apprentice at the College of Winterhold became dismayed at her lack of progress and the increasing strain of Ancano's presence leaves her to travel to the Shrine of Azura. To get away from the troubles and doubted her own power among her peers. There, Aranea Ienith speaks to her, and even has a moment where Azura's voice calls out. As she follows the journey for Azura's Star and manages to clear the spirit and daedric wards... Azura parts with a foretelling of the Dragon's Blood in her. She foretells my dragonborn's fate and the deliverance she brings for Tamriel. Though bleak are her talents now, her strength in courage and the fate written in her soul will bring the end of tyranny that all may suffer if she gave up then and there.

One thing I like about Azura is she's maybe the most "human" Prince. It feels like if you leave her alone, she's likely to leave you alone. Do right by her and she'll usually reciprocate, but screw her over and she'll come at you with all the power she can bring to bear. Really, I think that describes most of us mortals pretty well, too. Azura is not vain :/ she loves her people even if they turned their backs on her. Events of Morrowind, and all her questlines point to this. She is a mother figure, and mothers show love and discipline. She cursed the chimer because not only did the tribunal kill her champion, but rose themselves to god-hood. Everything she did was on the behalf of morrowind, including warning as many people as she could about the red year. In skyrim she even lets her last follower off duty, and allows them to adventure with the dragon born, being free of visions.

She is vain... vain in that she wants to be liked and revered;but not forget about her vindoctive nature like when she literally committed genocide on the Chimer and was still nice about it by turning them into dunmer because they turned their backs on her. She dont get me wrong she is very empathic but we can see she's a deadra for a reason. When everything is good she's nice as can be but when her ego gets checked she can't stand it.

@Max yeah she literally committed genocide though she was nice about it. She wiped out Chimer by turning them into Dunmer. Just she didn't genocide them in a the most conventional way ( which is killing them), doesn't mean that wasn't a literal genocide. No Chimer exists after the actions after the actions of the tribunal ( that whole group is gone and is never coming back). Yes they were turned into something else, but no matter how you try to dress it up; it was genocide. If you actually digested the lore then you know it nothing short of that. You obviously don't have the profound knowledge of elder scrolls mythology you think you do.

@Max Hey smart guy I never said the Chimer was smart for damaging the ego of a Deadric prince. In fact that was incredibly stupid what they did. My statement wasn't whether or not the Chimer were justified in turning their backs on the Deadra. I was simply pointing out that despite Azura being "benevolent" for a Deadra; she was still incredibly vain and wrathful when crossed with a tendency to overreact to any disrespect or perceived betrayal.

i think to Dunmer azura would represent self love and the love of ones family since she wants you to love her (as a metiphorical mother figure) and yourself, this is why she hates deception but stands in the dunmer pantheon with mephala and boethia, if you merge some of their principles together you get something like: you should be loyal to clan and family and push the interest of yourself and your family and not betray them (azura) but to use deception lies and betrayal to further the interest of you and your family is good (azura+mephala) and you should be strong for yourself and your family because life is harsh and a test of ones mettle (azura+boethia)

Thanks Drew! Azura and Meridia are the only two daedra for whom I will regularly perform their quests as both ask the dragonborn to cleanse something belonging to them of the evil of the undead and necromancy. The other daedric quests always leave me feeling dirty and tainted by their evil. Thus, I gladly avoid any contact with them. Meridia's Dawnbreaker is a beautiful piece of wall art. But, Azura gives me the most useful reward and I'm not talking about Azura's Star. I have plenty of grand soul gems. I am speaking directly of Arenea lenith, former priestess of Azura, who will join the dragonborn immediately after Azura's Star is cleansed of the evil necromancer, Nelacar, who trapped himself inside. I often recruit Brelyna Maryon as well as I have found that the only thing better than having a beautiful Dunmer mage in one's party is having TWO beautiful Dunmer mages! LOL

In the game the character should be punished severely for making Azura's Star into the Black Star. This is a Prince that changed the appearance of an entire race and brought forth the resurrection of her fallen champion and, despite the power granted to them by the Heart of Lorkhan, the Tribunal could not stop her from doing these things. A Dragonborn is nowhere near the power Almalexia, Sotha Sil or Vivec when they had access to the Heart so Azura should have no problem smiting them for their heresy.

In the book "The Monomyth" it is explained that the Aedra and Daedra first formed as not fully realized spirits in The Gray Maybe, a zone formed between Anu and Padomay. Though other parts of the book seem to imply it is between Anu and Oblivion/The Void, which I think might be because Padomay resides within the Void? In addition, one section describes the difference of Aedra and Daedra being distinct because of how closely they were aligned to either Anu or Padomay, perhaps during their formation. Though another section describes the difference being whether they chose to participate in the creation of Mundus. Or perhaps it's a little of both and how closely they are aligned to one or the other strongly effected their decision making on whether or not to participate. Of all the Aedra and Daedra, could Azura be the spirit closest to the center of this split? Perhaps closer to Anu because of her seemingly preferring to act benevolent at the foremost, or closer to Padomay because she eventually decided not to participate in the creation of Mundus. Or even the exact center. If this is the case, it was surely not an easy decision for her. My point is her balance between these two forces could be another layer to her sphere of Dawn and Dusk.
