Wanted Valis to come back so bad, checked the revival site every now an then. Heard of the Switch ports, was happy the series'd get some exposure, but a new game just seems impossible in the near future. Inti worked with Sunsoft to make Blaster Master Zero, wish Sunsoft still had the rights cus if Inti picked Valis up next they're the only dev I'd trust with the series tbh

Definitely understand the way you feel about the Valis crowdfunding. As a huge valis fan that got into the IP due to videos like yours + the PS3 ports of I/II, (which, along with the EGG music collection and the EGG Computer ports of Valis, were all Sunsoft did with that since Vic Ireland basically forced them to buy the IP, probably because he assumed they'd make sequels like they did with BM Overdrive & he openly wanted to port CF2 to Wii, but then that game bombed so sunsoft had a paperweight of IPs to do little with) I was longing for a type of compilation or some sort of new game for a while now: so I was baffled that when City Connection, the company doing a lot of great compilations like the Zombie Nation one, just didnt do anything with the Telenet IPs either, I was pretty much losing hope at Telenet stuff ever showing up again. To be honest, when Edia was announced as the new IP holder for Telenet I had equally bad hopes and was terrified they'd basically turn Valis into a gatcha hell or creepy waifu game, rather than bringing it back proper to finally show the IP's full potential if someone like Inti or Wayforward made a sequel to the series, but I'll be blunt, they've done more with licensing Telenet IPs already here in the west than anyone has since Renovation. A bunch of Genesis Telenet games got licensed to Antstream Arcade, marking the first EVER reissues of a bunch of that catalog in the west, then Super Valis IV/Psycho Dream/other Telenet games came to NSO, which made me literally scream in shock upon seeing the Valis IV box in the update video since I've longed to play that one, and then we have this crowdfunding... Which is unfortunately their biggest mistake, for most of the reasons you noted. Seriously, when it was announced as a compilation, I was a bit miffed: No X68K Valis II? No Valis IV PCE (even though the SNES port is honestly better)? Not even letting G-MODE get that amazing Valis I Mobile Phone remake on their archive service for preservation? Just... the two games I bought on PS3/PSP, again, but with the first EVER reissue of PCE III on a console. It felt weird, but I definitely wanted a switch copy so I had interest in backing a good amount... Until the region locking. And the crazy tiers. And the lackluster stretch goals. I literally begged them on twitter to lemme donate even without a reward as I wanted the IP to come back SO MUCH but they pretty much said they only considered the crowdfunding with Japan in mind and legitimately seemed surprised that western fans even liked the series?!? Which, I kinda can't blame them for, but at the same time, this is a perfect chance to expand (they could even throw in the funny dub versions of II/III!), so it felt so tone-deaf. Yet thankfully, it at least succeeded, with full english text and physical versions confirmed... but then backers wouldn't get a physical which made me honestly glad I didn't back it with a fake address or using a Japanese friend's PO box. I think in all honesty, what Edia thought is that these IPs are pretty fun games with value worth putting out again, but doing little else with, but they saw Valis as the most appealing due to the fact they could probably appeal Yuko's design to the modern eye-candy focused audience of flashy anime and mobile gaming, like how Langrisser made a similar comeback. (that worked well, since we got good remakes of I/II) Notice how not a single peep has been made about Exile, despite that series having some cameos of Valis in it and doing decently well, and even was put on Antstream. I truly believe they crowdfunded as they thought it would be a very very niche product and they figured they'd only get a little bit of money to create a rapid compilation and call it a day. Hopefully with the overseas reaction + Japanese success, they'll actually consider doing more with Telenet's stuff than just eyecandy. On a final promising note, they DID note when buying the IPs that they were buying them solely to license out to people interested in them... Which led to an awesome looking Renovation Collection from Evercade coming out next year, which will honestly likely have more love put into it than this due to it confirmed to have a full-color manual and also a bunch of non-valis/exile genesis games too, like Sol-Deace! Super hyped for that. But that means that in theory, you may be able to snag that Valis license from them after all, or at least someone like Wayforward/Inti... Speaking of which now that I hear it's a valis-inspired game, If you can pull off the godly music quality, I'll definitely keep tabs on your upcoming project! So yeah, TLDR: i feel Edia saw Valis as anime eyecandy girl the game and didn't think much of it, hence why they crowdfunded, not expecting much or even it to succeed, but it doing well + recent international interest from licensors like Evercade and Antstream may hopefully give them the push out of bed they need. ...I definitely would have pledged $250 on this if it was a US kickstarter with tons of more reasonable rewards though. I literally just spent $260 on a Solatorobo cart due to the allure of Opera Kranz, I'd spend $250 on a Valis compilation and a bunch of merch like OSTs and shirts in a heartbeat, but definitely not 2K!

I still even have a text document file were i wrote one of the ideas i had,and it says "a Valis 5 game with a godly version of Yuuko" When i looked at that compilation for the switch i was like "Why not remake the games instead?" Cause if i wanna play a Valis compilation then i'll just play the Valis Complete compilation. I also didn't like how they're seemingly not going to include the PC versions of the games, like the PC-88 Valis 1,The X68000 Valis 2 and so on.

So glad to see you're back, even if for some time. I'm not surprised by the news of the video, even though I expected at least something of the news. Too bad SEGA wasn't the buyer of the Valis brand. This crowdfunding stuff is absolutely ridiculous. But the worst is that it's both insulting to the work and abusive to the customers. The prices do not stack up to the rewards, it's a literal sacrifice in the name of love for a franchise which is mystified through its age by the IP holders to generate some kind of devotion with nothing in return. It's a cultist, emotionally abusive tactic and this is absolutely absurd and disgusting. And why does that always happen with video games? If someone told us they bought a 1000 dollars special edition book of the Lord of the Rings trilogy with your name put in the editor postface and a signature by Christopher Tolkien, would he be seen as anything but a sucker? People like to pretend video games are art, but they disregard the work and flock to the brands. To hell with the brand. A sequel or sister work is a work that evokes the same feelings, which uses the same artistic components as its predecessor. And especially with the case of Valis, it's not because some product has the brand slapped on its face that it's part of the family. lol

Edia sounds like they got the idea of these thanks to the way over priced switch ones Taito made on the Darius and Space Invaders series. So just charging silly money for a few 8 and 16 bit games then making special limited edtions that cost more with a few extra games added or putting the extra games as extra not free DLC which is what Toaplan are doing with their switch games.

I mean, it's some you feel passionate about, so yeah the time has come for the momentary return. Anyway, having to sell your IPs must suck. You know that whoever gets them is not gonna care, unless it prints money for them with no effort, which of course the people actually doing the hard work behind (the actual development team) will have to supply all the passion. But at least (?) this is a gaming company and not some asshat hoarding IPs to sue people, like the guy that owns Karnov. Or in a much smaller nich space, the guy that owns Horace.

If they were releasing new games based on the Valis series then that would be a different story. Maybe a side story spinoff game about the sword of Lasis that thety talk about in Valis 3?

1000$ for your name in the credits when the vast majority of Kickstarters will put your name in even if you back a dollar. Also how would credits for a compilation of games even work? Im assuming it would be one of those things on the title screen or options menu someone would have to select to show who backed it. Honestly, you probably have a better chance now of trying to convince the rights holders to make your project Valis 5 if they just want some quick thing to slap the title on and sell, especially if you can get on board some great artists and musicians for the final project to show off to them. Valis X was a thing after all and that used the official branding.
