The Valvetronic exhaust system on the AU spec supra is utterly useless.. But WHY?!

It's no surprise that different markets get different features, but this one makes absolutely no sense.
The Australian spec valves pretty much do NOTHING.
Typically a valve helps keep the exhaust quiet so you don't annoy your neighbours, especially during cold start, but almost as importantly when you're cruising through your neighbourhood.
We found the AU Spec cars have a valve that is open ALL THE TIME except when it's cold, for the first 15 seconds or so, and then it never closes again..
We have no idea why this is the case, or what logical sense it makes. It was only after we had a chat to Matt Erjavac, a MK5 Supra forum member in the USA who showed us just how differently his system operates.
And let me tell you it makes a HELL of a lot more sense to operate like this.
In Australia, the "sports mode" doesnt change the exhaust, all it does it change the crackle tune.. The exhaust under idle and accel sounds identical.. But how?? Does this mean our exhausts are different? Even though the part numbers are the same?
And what possible logic behind it is there?
Anyway, this video was purely made for curiosity sake, and may help some fellow aussies realise why their cars sound so quiet compared to our mates across the pond.

Yeah, the only thing I can think of is that with the valve closed the catalytic converter heats up faster???? No clue.

Would be cool to see a video outlining the differences between both your a90 and a80 supra and how they feel to drive/track and what you like/dislike about each car

US supra owner here. Yes, regular mode the valve is closed, obviously opens when WOT and in Sport mode it also does sound like it opens when above a certain RPM even when not wide open throttle.

100% a sound regulation thing. Must be tested with and without the value closed so they had to quieten down the whole thing and thought it’s to quiet with it closed so aswell leave it open all the time. Probably a recent change in the regs to stop Ferrari’s and stuff being really quiet with their flaps closed and super loud with them open.

My guess would be it has a much quieter muffler to comply with the ADR noise limits and perhaps the noise limit must apply with and without the flap open?

My U.K. spec exhaust Valve is open in all modes. Sounds very muted. Car goes like hell but sounds like a Prius 🤦🏻

ME spec here and it behaves like AU models. In comfort valve closes at 2nd gear and stays closed. Once Sport is engaged it opens and closes back at highway speeds. Notice the sound more due to the Akrapovic and Catless DP I have. Excellent video illustrating the differences

I would like to get a catback exhaust but not sure if I should go with one that utilises the factory valves or something like the valvtronic design which has its own vacuum controlled valves and controller. If the stock valve close in second gear comfort mode then that seems perfect but I'd like the valves open all the time in sport mode. Can you please tell me more about how the valves behave on our cars? In sport mode at highway speeds will the valve open if I put my foot down? Etc

That's odd my M140 had the valuetronic exhaust and it would open and close when the sports button was pressed. (Australia btw)

It's same on the EU cars. I think it's because of the OPF/GPF. If the valves were closed on top of having the extra particulate filter, the restriction would be so high that the car wouldn't run efficiently. Gas consumption would be higher. But MHD is releasing a software soon where you can actually set the vales to function like the US models.

It might be cause in Europe cars with loud exhaust from the factory are getting banned, they want to reduce the sound so city life is more quiet. Maybe they did the same for your car.

this is not called valvetronic. valvetronic is related to cam valve !

Google "valvetronic exhaust".. It's a common term used to relate to exhausts with valve actuators.. But yes, technically it is also applied to other references.

@@StreetFXofficial correct u r. bmw uses valvetronic for their valve timing, as supras are made by bmw, i quickly came into conclusion without checking. thanks for letting me know

I actually love it, but there's a bunch of things that bug me about it which I will go over in the next video.. Pushed hard on the track, it's straight up dangerous. The ESC (when it is turned completely OFF) decides to turn on randomly, and is horrifically intrusive, it is more likely to cause an accident than save one.

but but but cant you just get a different exhaust alltogether? or do you want to keep it stock for now? or perhaps some wizzard does wizzard like stuff in the ecu to make it us spec?

Yes, we will be, but it is nice to have the option to quieten things down for daily driving or around your own hood.

i know! it makes no sense either :\ And it's not an easy fix either.. Unless it's a setting in the ECu that can be coded in/out?

The valve should close automatily when you drive 50kph with light throttle Its a Sound regulations thing here in Europe , maybe you get the same Sound Management in Australia. Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪
