This is definitely why Lucian helped Michael Corvin and Selene. Because he saw that they were the same. And he didn't want Michael and Selene go through the pain him and Sonja did. Wanted to give them a chance that he and Sonja couldn't.

Throughout Sonja’s Death in The 2003 Underworld Film is Brutal but Sonja’s Death in The 2009 Underworld Rise of The Lycans is Just Far Superior. It’s Absolutely Heartbreaking not only due get to See Lucian Screams of Heartbreak after losing his Wife and Child but seeing Viktor’s Guilt out what he just did Sentencing his Daughter and Grandchild to Death. Even though Victor thought what he was doing was right he truly didn’t take pleasure at seeing his Daughter and Grandchild Executed.

Which is why in some versions of the first film in the extended version or the theatrical version they use the scene from Rise of the Lycans when Michael Corvin sees the death of Sonja.
