Crying is just a physiological reaction. Even newborn babies cry. When we get an unexpected, pleasant, overwhelming surprise, tear drops down our eyes. I hate the reason behind Damon's tears, the HEARTBREAK. And it's been quite a frequent affair in his life. Soooo saddening!

But when Damon and Elena were together it was different. It was more dangerous and unexpected and exciting. Elena and Stefan were "the anchor of the show as the main love story however seemed to revolve around Elena and Stefan considering all the endings that needed to be rewritten. Even the show producer had every intention of reuniting Stefan and Elena but Nina Dobrev's exit changed everything.
