Godbluff is the best. One of my all-time favorites.

I would not argue with you. Still Life is the one for me. Godbluff is awesome, no doubt.

Thank you, Darren! A great band! Totally underrated! I am looking forward seeing them again live after the end of the pandemic. My favourites are H to He and Godbluff. A Caravan Primer would be totally welcome as I have only 3 albums by them. 😃

Ah yes, I can’t wait to see Van der Graaf Generator in concert after all the pandemic stuff, and a caravan primer would be cool too!

I love Still Life. It's probably my favorite VDGG album. It has an intimacy about it that I relate very strongly to. I have everything up to Quiet Zone, along with all of Hammill's 70's solo albums. A good overview, Darren. I enjoyed the Hammill primer too. Thank you!

The mystery of Jackson leaving after Present. It seems to never be fully explained why, was it because he did the interview with Classic Rock Productions for the Review DVD?

No, I heard Hammill referring to "differing expectations" and that's all there is on it...

Are you going to do a primer on The Verve? It would be easy since they only have four studio albums. I remember seeing your reviews of Northern Soul and Urban Hymes on the music go round series.

They can be a hard graft. I got into the Godbluff > Quiet Zone records just after my grandfather died. They were purchased during my final year of traditional record collecting in 1994.

Just subscribed to your channel and thanks for this VDGG review as think it’s really good. For me they are a unique band that have put out some fantastic music, often need to work at them but worthwhile. I agree without David Jackson they lose (at the risk of sounding like I’m disappearing up where we all know where) what I feel is his integral and fundamental contribution to their sound, and he’s a stunning sax player too! To be honest I’m not that much into the albums without him as it never sounds right to me. My personal favourite albums have to be Pawn Hearts, Godbluff and H to E though I own others as there are specific tracks I like. Much of Peter Hammill’s solo work is similar I think, there are some albums and particular tracks that are great and some leave me cold. Be hell of task to review all his stuff! Anyway, VDGG for me have always been a striking and original band who have produced some amazing music. Good to hear you talking about them and thanks for the review.

Oh lol, just four albums as essential and one of those just because it was a come back album? Not a big fan then? Love all their albums, my favourite is probably Still Life or Pawn Hearts or H to He or Godbluff or Trisector or Do Not Disturb or Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome or Present or Numbers or I don't actually know, I love them all even Alt has it's moments and Peter Hammill's solo stuff is excellent. I'm a big fan. Sounds like I'm more into them, one of my favourite artists. Great live.

@@TheDarrenLock I get the format, just think there are too many essential albums to whittle it down to so few, that's just me though. As a genuine PH and VDGG nut, to me they are all essential in some way, each album has it's own world and a reason to love, I find it impossible to pick just a few albums out. I appreciate that's what you're trying to do, to help anybody new to the artist. It's just me 👍

I think a PH Primer could make a great companion piece to this. I love VDGG (Godbluff, H2He, never heard Pawn Hearts...true story! Need to remedy that.) but don’t have any of the Hammil solo titles. Would be curious where to start there.

After Jackson left they should have changed their name to DELP.. Diluted ELP. Reminds me of a darker version of them.
