‘The Vanishing Ink’ is about the traditional tattoos of the Iban community, also known as pantang or kelingai. The tattoos played a very important role in Iban culture as it represents one's social status, particularly celebrating a warrior’s success in battle. As an Iban, the choreographer would like to immortalize this Iban tattoo tradition that is slowly consumed by modernization. This work reveals a concern on the choreographic material’s immediate and direct relevance to the tattoo as a symbol of the identity of the contemporary Iban community, highlighting the attractiveness of the dying tattoo practice that uses living human skin as canvas.
