Guys music theory isn’t the study of music genres, it’s how music is made and composed. Although you could talk about the Music Theory of vapor wave, what that means is basically you’re talking about the chord progression or what key a song could be in, Music Theory has nothing to do with Music History. Two separate things.

It seems like lately there's been a few more subgenres, like Barber Beats. Apparently, they're a distilled form of Vaporwave that takes a "less is more" approach. Some gatekeeping folks say it's not "real Vaporwave" because it takes samples of other Vaporwave songs and remixes them... even tho that's what Vaporwave does with other songs and audio sources. In a way, Barber Beats are some sort of "meta vaporwave" which is honestly pretty brilliant, more self-contained in the whole genre itself, more self-sustained, and it shows that Vaporwave itself is nostalgic enough to be used as source for more Vaporwave. It's beautiful, in a way!

Personally, I don't consider lofi hip hop as a subgenre of vaporwave. Although it takes a lot of its aesthetics from vaporwave, it's more heavily based on jazz and hip hop, as heard by the acoustic instruments, hip-hop samples, and jazz-like chords they're composed of. The ideology of lofi hip hop also fits better with the chill, existential, and nihilistic thought processes of other city/alt lofi movements. I find it really interesting how people have classified each of these subgenres.
@PINKAS15 жыл бұрын
I don’t either. They’ve had some influence on eachother but aren’t related. I mentioned Lofi Hiphop because if you Google search «late night lofi» you get mostly lofi hiphop results and not the vaporwave subgenre

@midgetman42063 жыл бұрын
I call the main, parent, genre "retrowave" because sythwave kinda has its own sound like darksynth. And while you may be right about the scale compared to each other, vaporwave does have a bunch of weird stuff like pretty much slamming a keyboard and calling it done. (which is as vaporwave as it gets, but that just means its a joke in the literal sense. It's beginnings were rebellious in the form of abstract, which doesn't really say much. But it did gain more, stable and enjoyable genres like future funk or whatever sonyboogie belongs too. I guess Lo-Fi too, but I don't care for that one, the other 2 mentioned are the only ones I respect but that's just me)

vaporwave becoming a meme nearly killed the music...

Great video and greatly researched. All the things we know, together in 1 place. Your analysis of the aims and ways of the music is spot on, truly capturing, at least my feelings, into precise words without leaving this unclear and up to interpretation.

Wow, thank you for this kind comment. Really spent a ton of time on this vid so i really appreciate that

@@PINKAS1 Your work so far reminds me alot of how I was taught literature and it's more in-depth than just looking at the techniques applied and talks about how to make the audience feel what they want them to, especially considering the fact you're no expert in music nor aesthetics, either than the time you spent studying them for videos and your own pleasure. Keep doing good work, I love sharing your videos and the part in the end about how this isn't what vaporwave and it's subgenres have to be also shows how it's still evolving and we're experiencing it while that happens. Just like in the past, few were the people who were able to truly see how poets and writers have changed and evolved their styles and themes, it's the same with vaporwave.

I thought all songs like this were just vaporwave
@anunnacy5 жыл бұрын
Well.. they are. It's the same like you can ofc say "Metal" to all its subgenres like "Thrashmetal, Deathmetal, Blackmetal, Metalcore, ...". So yeah, it's all Vaporwave, it's just different subgenres/categories of Vaporwave.

Such a great breakdown man. I’ve always been more on the lofi hiphop side but for some reason synth stuff just comes naturally to me

Thank you for educating me, I'm a huge vaporwave (and synthwave) fan, but I had no idea there were so many subgenres and so many differences between them
@bornshamir77923 жыл бұрын
Well done. With all the sub-genres there is always the sense of exploration for a true crate digger and avid music lover.

This is an excellent, entertaining, and informative video. It really helped me wrap my brain around this tangled barrel of snakes that is this genre and sub-genres.
