Yet another winner from Finland, lol. I've had several leukus and puukkos,(Ahti, Kellam, Wood Jewel, Martiini) and the only issue I've had is the hilts tend to be a bit short for my bear paws. Other than that, they've all been beautiful, well made tools. Throw in the Moras I've used, and you get the impression that the Scandinavian countries love good knives...

Yes! This is the one for trust. I've been using this for more than one year now. While this year I tested several other knives but to be honest with you, this Terava Jaakaripuukko is still my number one knife so I take this to my camping as the primary knife. I don't need to worry about the cost of this knife so I abuse it a lot at the camping. But every time I abuse him it always prove me his high performance. It was so pleasing to me to have this knife that I made five review videos. This knife is so rare in Japan.

I got my new sheath in the mail a couple weeks ago. I had to buy one at a time. My knife in the box with out the plastic sheath. It came with a piece of card board. Oh well. I didn't mind. The knife was what I was wanting. I got the sheath and it was worth the wait for the sheath. I use mine as my a EDC gear. Now I want to get the big brother and the Skrama blade next. You have a great gear now I want to get my wife a blade for her to use and protect her self. Kudos to you guys.

I love this knife! I just picked one up off of eBay (with factory original leather sheath), plus a very nice kydex sheath from a US maker. I found a great protector called BoeShield, made by Boeing. You rub it on and let it set for a couple of hours, then wipe it off. It protects from corrosion for months at a time per application. Thanks for the great review!

Everything I've bought from Varusteleka.com has been great quality gear. My favorite backpack is the Savotta Jakaari S, a 19 liter pack that will accommodate everything I need for an overnighter and occasionally for two nights. I own several Mora's but after watching this review I will invest into one of those Terava Puuko's and the leather sheath...love the looks of that dangler set up. The shipping from Suomo, Finland is via DHL and for ten bucks you cannot go wrong. It's a quick service, too. Thank you for a great review, Bryan!

If you look at their webpage where it says "out of stock" there will be a line that says "expected on day xxx" It's a little unfamiliar for us but that day starts at Jan 1...Jan 6 would be "day 6"" etc. If you use that date you will be able to order even before the email alerts you that they're back in stock. That's how I got mine and that "restock on" date has always been accurate whenever I've checked it. Great knives and super affordable shipping. Really nice company to do buisness with. Great to the point and thorough review Bryan... and I enjoy your ramblings. Bought this knife myself in the 110mm variant and agree with everything you mentioned. It's a mini beast and the sheath is incredible. If you just consider the price of the knife itself at only around 30 bucks, it just might be one of the best bang for the buck bush craft blades available right now although I think the Mora Robust is also hard to beat for the price as well. Great no nonsense review of this Puukko!!!

No 1 is a basic all steel (skeletonised handle) the available sheath is a simple slip type leather sheath with 2 holes in a little hump at the mouth so it can be hung point down around the neck No 2 is same size but has the full overmould handle of the normal knife tbe sheath for this one is a scaled down copy of the original that's the mini puuko there is also a mini skrama same dimensions etc slightly different blade shape, I have both variants and think highly of them 👍 Bill

Semi full tang or protruding stick tang is what is used to describe a knife where the tang is running all the way to the end of the handle and in some cases stick out (protruding stick tang), but the handle is overmould. We call it a full tang if you can see the steel on the side of the handle and it's handle slabs on the metal. Most Scandinavian knives have overmould handles because it gets really cold. The exception is Enzo (also Finish) who have full tang models also. It's just another way of calling things over here in the old world that might be confusing sometimes but I do recommend checking out Enzo. It's the brand I often take out when I need a small camp knife. You can see the tang of the knife on the website but it's broad. Not some flimsy rat tail. As you mentioned you can also feel it. The whole knife feels rugged. For the money one of the best smaller camp knives out there.

And I can clearly see why :) Performs well with both ferro rods and flint. Highly affordable. And I love knives that make great feathers! I am heading to Lapland in some two weeks and hoping to finish the sheaths by then. Perfect opportunity to test new stuff :) And see how they compare to my favorite outdoor blades. Might have been forgotten... but i find it worth to mention that "varusteleka" is not a manufacturer, they are selling Army surplus stuff and sure enough this is from the finnish army. This is a finnish army jaeger knife. (jääkäri - Jäger(german) Jaeger(english?) in ww2 finnish soldiers all had their personal "puukko" (pronounce lik "puh-k koh" (not pjuke-o !) when the war came, and they used them sucscessfully in the forrest and on the invaders. nowadays, the finnisch army provides the knifes - if it would be anything less worthy than the (usually high end) individual knifes, it would just be thrown into the bin. So they decided to make it good pragmatic as they are in finland.

Good point on the Varusteleka part. A slight correction on the Finnish army part though. This knife is manufactured for Varusteleka by Laurin Metalli. These are brand new knives made to serve you well for a long time. Also the army does not provide a knife for the average conscript. We will bring our own knives to the service with us.

Whenever I see this knife I think of the Tops BOB. It has the same shape and is ground the same (Scandi with secondary bevel). It is a hair thinner though. I like that sheath. Thanks for showing it Bryan. The BOB would be another good knife to compare it to, along with the Garberg. Just a thought.

I have both and they are very similar blade wise (shape). The terava has a slightly higher grind and goes through wood a tad better.

Great knives. I have the mini Skrama, I have a paracord handle on it for now but I'm going to make a micarta handle soon. When I get the micarta slabs on, I'm going to make it my EDC, retiring my Busse Active Duty.

The Martiini Condor Timberjack is a good blade as well. I agree with your view on batoning, there a middle ground between the two extremes.

Story time... when I received my 110 Carbon version Jääkäripuukko, it came 2 weeks later than scheduled via USPS. The box had been soaking wet, and it was wrapped in clear plastic. The knife was rusted from one end to the other, and the leather shealth stunk to high heaven. Instead of returning it all, I decided to challenge myself to clean it all up and put it into service. It took me a very long time to remove all of the rust. There were a few "pits" along the blade edge, so I re-did the edge, putting a small convex grind to the scandi. I like my scandi grinds to have some convexing... seems to improve the strength. Anyway... will I ever buy another one? Yes, but I'd like the 140cm blade and IN STAINLESS this time.

This knife is built, with focus on toughness (literally like a tank), which means, that you lose stainless and slicing abilities. 52100 and 80crv2 which this knife is made of, are probably the best carbon steels out there. Theoritically, you can't break this knife and I have to admit, I haven't seen any of them, broken or bent or damaged. They also look rustic, cool look and that's how a knife like this should look. Who would have thought, that the era, the Apocalypse was speaking of, is now and even the knives, would have post Apocalyptic look and design. Hope you all choose the right path. God bless you all!

PS It is at 59 hrc which is great IMO. It takes a little more time to sharpen than a Mora, but it also holds its edge more than a Mora. This is not a bushcraft knife, the blade is scandi with a micro bevel, but because the microbevel isn't so "micro" Μικρό by the way means small in Greek. That means that it is more like a saber flat grind, rather than a scandi. You can easlily make it scandi, but keep in mind, it will take a bit longer than a normal 1095 steel, you may be used to. I wish the handle was a bit thicker but I have seen much worse handle ergos on more expensive and more famous knives, which means that considering it's price, it is a great knife! I call it mountain survival knife, even though it can work as a hard use bushcraft knife too! Stay safe and God Bless you all!

Great😠 I've been wanting one for a loooong time but gave up and kinda forgot about them cause they were always out of stock. Then Chris at PM101 did I his review that was it I totally gave up.....So this fathers day I was gonna try again and now YOU go and bring attention back to it😕 gee thanks Brian LOL Now they will be out of stock tell 2020......Jokes aside my stinking bank card wouldn't work when I finally seen them in and wah wah wahhhhhhhh 😒 😉 They are pretty cool but I might just get the Mora Carbon and let go of my Stainless. Both are cool knives and very different ....let folks know that in your comparison video, the grinds are very different IMO. Now that the Mora Carbon is here I think your comparison video would be cool.

Nice review. I purchased my Puukko a few months ago. It's one of the best knife purchases I've made regardless of cost. At the price point, the quality, form , fit and function is hard to beat. Tough steel that stays sharp and the sheath puts a lot of higher prices blade sheaths to shame.
