Fun fact: I wrote the chorus for this song a year ago, way back when the first gameplay reveals came out. The idea of going somewhere new and exploring has always been inspiring to me - this song goes on that list along with The Great Unknown, Into The Wild, New Frontier, City Of Dreams, Open Air, My Odyssey etc... I love how Gavin is always able to write a song that both connects to a game but also is distinct enough to which gives me a thousand ideas. I am a Transformers fan and I can see this be connected to to a space romp kind of story akin to More than Meets the Eye, but at the same time it fits so well with the time allussions to be a good sort of writing theme for a the main character of a book I am writing who has heavy ties to time and reality among other aspects. Its just always so awe inspiring to see Gavin just create generally.

This song really captures the concept behind Starfield as an entirely different game from Bethesda's earlier titles. I think a lot of players who were disappointed in the story weren't expecting an entirely new sort of story. In Elder Scrolls, you are the Hero of the realm: you build out your character, step through the ranks of the ingame factions, and defeat the big bad of the game, whether that's Dagoth Ur, Mehrunes Dagon or Alduin. You're a classic hero in the style of Luke Skywalker or Harry Potter, a Chosen One even. You're also always set upon this mission by someone else, whether that be Caius Cosades, the Emperor or The Blades. In Fallout, you''re an Adventurer: You try to survive in a hostile world that you're unfamiliar with as you help people with their problems while trying to solve your personal quest, and along the way you get involved in regional political affairs between the various factions who try to convince you to do their bidding. In the end, your actions decide the future of the entire game world. this is more like Geralt of Rivia or Richard Rahl. There isn't a real questgiver for this mission, instead something happens to you at the start of the game that forces you to set out. But in Starfield, you're an Explorer: you travel the entire map in search of legendary artifacts while trying to stop your nemesis from doing the same. There is no political scheming to crown a given faction, no ultimate evil to vanquish, no faction ladder to scale, no personal mission to solve. Your character was recruited because you happened to be the person who started it all, and there is no real goal beyond just finding the artifacts and following the trail they lead to the conclusion. You're effectively Indiana Jones or Benjamin Gates. This is an entirely different story compared to the Hero and Adventurer stories that Bethesda fans are used to, and that Bethesda themselves are used to writing, and it shows. In the Indiana Jones movies and the National Treasure movies, Indiana Jones and Benjamin Gates always had an additional personal motive for the treasure hunt beyond just the treasure itself: Indiana Jones wanted to keep the Ark out of the hands of 1930s Germany, and later on save his father, and Benjamin Gates was taught about the treasure by his grandfather, and later wanted to clear his ancestor's name. This makes the treasure hunt feel a bit more high-stakes for the Explorer, and thus also for the audience. Starfield lacks this personal motive, and it makes the story feel less important. There is no real reason to hunt for the artifacts beyond it being the goal of the game, and it's never adequately explained, even in the ending. It's a story driven by curiosity, and not everyone enjoys a story like that.

I always love the exploration songs, and while I haven't played star field, I love space and exploring new places in general (and now that it's been ironed out, no man's sky has a similar vibe) and i grew up near the Kennedy space center where the shuttles launched so this song also feels like an anthem of space exploration in general. To the final frontier! And having it be a rock ballad to be horizons is great ^^ I don't often like slower songs but you always make them feel so grand and intentional and still moving at a lively pace. Anyway gonna listen a few dozen more times XP
