Pius XII happened. He was an excellent Cardinal-S😅ecretary of State but an ineffective pope. He isolated himself from his cardinals, ruled like an absolutist without Secretary of State, refused to talk to the dean of cardinals, the formable cardinal Tisserand etc. The cardinals in the conclave wanted to be taken seriously and elected the antithesis of Pius XII.
