"The Vault: The TRUE Awards" began with a screening of a clip from "The Vault 1.1: Nineteen Sixty-Four", where theatre practitioners Serene Chen and Nora Samosir read an excerpt from "A White Rose at Midnight", followed by a devised performance responding to the original play-text.
"The TRUE Awards" was presented on 11 & 12 April 2024 in the Black Box, 42 Waterloo Street. This video recording documents the clip screening and full performance of "The TRUE Awards" from the 11 April show.
Lim Chor Pee's "A White Rose at Midnight" was first staged in 1964 and centres around disillusioned English-educated scholar Lee Hua Min and his tumultuous relationship with Chinese-educated ex-nightclub singer Ching Mei. Written and staged in the volatile years before Singapore became an independent country, the play is a humorous, witty and prescient portrait of both a soul and a nation divided.
In 2024, seven students from the National University of Singapore's Theatre & Performance Studies TS3103 Theatre Lab presented a response to the original text using their research and insights into its themes, issues and dramaturgy. Accompanying this performance-response was a screening of excerpts of the original text read by veteran actors Serene Chen and Nora Samosir in "The Vault 1.1: Nineteen Sixty-Four".
