Yep, I also have the gene that make me taste bitternes well. There is a special test with some bitter paper that you can taste to determine wether you have the bitter-gene or not. Did it in a biotech-class and it was sooo bitter for me, but some of my classmates didn't taste anything from it at all.

I friggin LOVE LOVE LOVE tomato sandwiches, but in addition, at our house, we will make tomato salad often, too, which is just tomatoes and blue cheese dressing, YUM! I love how you and I are so alike and on different parts of the US (north of Seattle, here). We have a lot of the same veggies and flowers from all the same growers this year. You help me though, when it's time for planting, newie here! Thanks for making me smile today! Have a great day, Nicole!

COSTOLUTO FLORENTINO TOMATO. I grew that variety last year. That is the variety that they gave you instead of yellow pear. I saved seeds from mine because it was my favorite out of 20 varieties. Zero disease problems, absolutely gorgeous ribbed fruits, good tolerance of my gardening ineptitude, and it made excellent sauce.

As soon as you said African Daisy I had a big smile on my face. I'm from South Africa and still here. We grow these plants all year, as they grow naturally. We have orange and yellow varieties. I would also suggest looking up a barbeton daisy, which is actually what that flower reminds me of a little more. They come in a wide variety of colours and petal shapes. Very striking. Oh and san marzano are my favourite tomatoes. Most people only make sauce or concentrate/paste from them but I love to cut the up with fresh Mozzarella, olive oil, balsamic, salt and cayenne pepper on lightly toasted bread. Just the best. I have gotten many ideas for flowers and other things to grow. Thanks for sharing.

This video makes me so happy. I am in the process of trying to buy a house on land right now but the market is crazy and everything is selling for above asking. I made a huge order of seeds for this season to have them ready and frankly I have been a freak about sifting through them pretty much daily. Reading, watching videos on growing, talking my poor husband's ears off about plants, and honestly feeling somewhat alone in my gardening obsession. Its so nice to see someone else as passionate about plants as me. 😅 I'm looking forward to watching your channel this next season.

Awesome haul! I got a nasturtium variety this year called Alaska Apricot that have variegated leaves! I got the white marigolds too! & I'm growing Dahlias for the 1st time from seed & tubers. I've started the seeds already, & they're already germinating! 😁 I grew cucamelons last year, & had a horrible time growing them from seed. They kept germinating but then kept dying after a couple weeks. I thought it was my grow lights, maybe too strong? Because I had them under marshydro ts600's. ??? Still don't know... But I found some in 3 inch pots @ lowes (& my stores don't usually carry things like that!) & they did awesome. They were so tasty! Areal refreshing snack when you're out, hot & sweaty in the garden!I have almost 50 varieties of tomatoes. & do not have room for that many! 🤣 about the yellow pear- i have tried those for about 5 years, I will not grow them anymore! No matter how consistent I water they split like crazy! & they don't really have a great taste. I got "Savor" From Johnny's. It's so beautiful I can't wait to try it. I'm growing a lot more beans next year to can them. I love fresh green beans! I discovered kajari melons from jess too- want able to find any but I just got some in a seed swap! I'm hoping they are good seeds! 🤞

Hi Nicole! My family also used to have problems with growing eggplant. But in 2020, we grew Eggplant so well, to the point that we were giving it away to friends. We are in hardiness zone 5b and we are hoping to recreate our success this year. My tip is to germinate the seedlings in the first week of February. We also planted them with our hot peppers and away from our tomatoes. Keep a watch out for the Japanese beetles and hornworms on your eggplant as they will hinder the plants' growth. I love your videos!

I’ve grown that African daisy before. It may be different for you but I noticed that mine did well in the spring, stopped putting on flowers when it got hot and then put on more blooms in fall. I grew the Purple Russian tomato last year and it did not do well for me. All of the fruit had blossom end rot. Maybe it’ll do better for you. Last year I grew a moon garden around my frog pond......all white flowering plants with lime green accents....so pretty at night with the fairy lights I had inserted in my clematis plant....I also took black garden plant pots planted blackish burgundy vining potato plants with white zinnias in them and screwed them to my barn art studio walls along with antique garden rakes and those metal stars....... This year I’m taking an old satellite dish spray painting it and filling it with flowers and trailing vines and before filling it screwing it to a tree trunk that’s four feet tall..... You mentioned weed problems....check out Charles Dowding no till method for new flower beds...I love it...I have a sandy rocky area in front of my barn and I’m doing this method and then planting cut flowers that the deer won’t feast on.... Thank you for all your videos.....I pay my grandson and granddaughters to weed for me...saves me time and backaches...they love to help and they also love the bon fire hot dog roast with homemade milkshakes to go with it...lol

If you have problems growing carrots and other crops that form underground, maybe you should try a raised bed. You said your ground is rocky. I bet that is why your carrots have problems. My rule for myself is anything that develope underground goes in a raised bed so I can make the soil very fluffy. I usually use 4 different types of compost, peat moss, and vermiculight mixed together in the bed. Plants grow great.

Hi 👋 I just found you and I want to be your flower friend 🤣 Went back and have been watching some of your summer videos dreaming of summer oh man !! Random and out of context with this video lol but have to tell you that you eat your tomatoe sandwiches wrong. (I did to for forever so I have to share ) open faced is the way. Mayo not the whip stuff. Sliced super thin so you can put an entire tomato in layers on 2 pieces of toast. Salt and Pepper. Sliced thin you get more tomatoes. Watching you eat a tomato sandwich made me go and buy tomatoes and had it for breakfast this morning as I watched your videos. Dreaming of hot summer days. Not as good as from the garden but better than nothing. 🤪💜 thanks for your videos

I'm going to watch this again so I can take notes. I can give you a tip on eggplant that works for me. After a couple of weeks in the ground and I see where the lowest blossoms are I strip all the leaves below them off. I also make sure the tinny suckers that grow near the bottom are always off as well. I do have to stake them because of the weight of the fruit. I might not get as many fruit as some people, but they are nice fruit. I've had plants as tall as 3 ft. I bought the plants, but this year I'm going to try and winter sow a few seeds in milk jugs at the end of March as an experiment. Take care, stay safe.

I even had a couple that came out as doubles and were gorgeous! I also grew those double champagne last year-very pretty but only got about 3-4 ft tall. I'm wondering if they were stunted by being in pots for too long? (Also, have you seen the video on how to condition hollyhocks for cut flowers? Very cool, new to me.) I grew that pretty cabbage from Baker Creek last year too and just a heads up they are massive! Thanks for sharing the veggies! Very cool to see we grow a lot of the same :)

You start all these vegetables and flowers from seed....all in your basement? What...what...what??? I can't believe you start so many different varieties of seeds for veggies & flowers.....is it because you do soil blocking?? I couldn't imagine how many heat mats/grow lights and shelves you would need to grow so many seeds if you were doing them in trays.... I now have everything I need to start soil blocking. Got my compost/peat moss today! Few days ago I got my soil blocking equipment. I hope I have success making the mix. Happy Gardening! I am still in shock how many seeds you start!

Not everything is started inside. The stuff that is has different times to start them so they rotate on the heat mat. Soil blocking definitely helps!

I didn’t have any luck with Blacktail last year, but I will be trying again this year. Hopefully with more success!

I can definitely taste the bitter. However I also can't eat beets, radishes, or asparagus as it's just too intense. The two things I'm most excited about growing are the Blue Berries tomatoes and Minnesota Midget melons.

Ugh-- taste is so weird! I'm going to have to look up those melons!

oh yes! I also have overactive bitter taste buds. Many greens and most lettuces I grow taste bitter to me. To the point I gave up growing them. I thought I was doing something wrong.

I really feel like giving up on lettuce - or having taste bud surgery 🤷♀️😂

yeah same for me about bitterness, peas only when are reeeeally small taste okay, and some romane and iceberg lettuce in the beginning of a season.

I love and share your excitement when it comes to seed hauls! I just wanted to say please don't get sick from eating uncooked beans. As far as I know peas can be eaten raw but beans have that phasin toxin which gets inactivated by heat. I'm very curious about how the pink dandelions are going to turn out! Stay safe and best regards Selene

I’ve heard of that! Raw beans are super common snacks here. We’ve never gotten sick! My cousin in Germany couldn’t believe we eat them raw. We have by the bowl full since we were kids 🤷♀️

@@FlowerHillFarm Funnily I'm from Germany, too! Beans are never eaten raw here so it's super interesting for me to find out how they're eaten in other parts of the world. Here we usually boil them for a few minutes until they loose their crunchyness and become tender. We love them with butter and salt or with certain sauces. I also love them pan fried with garlic. That's a common side dish in Asian restaurants here. I've read in a greek cookbook that only certain types of beans, broad beans (Vicia faba), are eaten raw by some people when harvested at a young stage. I'm super excited for this growing season. My boyfriend keeps telling me we don't have enough space in the garden haha Best regards Selene

Maybe it is the young part that helps! They are even served as raw snacks on prepared veggie platters in grocery stores. So many good beans recipes! I love them all the ways. I’ll definitely need to show some recipes this year 💐 looks like you need a bigger garden 😂🥰

@@FlowerHillFarm It can't be so bad if they are even served like this. Seems we're Europeans are missing out! I don't even know what they taste like raw. I'd love to see some recipes. My favorite types of videos are garden tours though. I just love to see what grows in other gardens or farms. We sure do! haha :D
