Hi, I'm Milly and this is my vlog which is mainly about books I buy, books I read and the e-books I write.
As I'm still waiting for some more books from the Women's Prize longlist to arrive in my library, I decided to pick up a previous winner of the International Booker. This one was the 2016 winner and it is beautifully written and certainly makes you think.

Interesting how vegetarianism is such a rebellious move. It sounds similar in some ways to Kafka's The Hunger Artist.

Deeply multifaceted book that has a lot to say despite its short length. I do feel it suffers a bit of "bad press" let's say due to the title and the baggage it implies, I've seen a lot of non-vegetarians treat it as some kind of affront to their way of life when the book isn't quite about that at all. Yeong-hye's decision to stop eating meat is a symbolic one, and could probably be replaced with any other drastic decision or announcement without necessarily altering a lot of what the book has to say. As the husband character says, her breaking the societally enforced norms upon her is the first time he even thought about considering her existence as anything more than an accessory in his life, and the repurcussions of that decision play out in so many different ways throughout the book. I do feel like it is a deeply moving and disturbing exploration into society, sexism, patriarchy, the male gaze, the way neurodivergence is viewed and treated and people try to almost beat it out of victims... there is so much there. And that is just the theme; the decision to explore this one central incident from the viewpoint of three different characters is such an interesting stylistic choice and the book is all th emore better for it. I enjoyed your video and just wanted to leave a comment here saying people who are putting off reading this book because they think it is some kind of vegan activist screed are really missing out on one of the finest novels this side of the millennium. There are things to take away for so many people; there is definitely a message that will resonate with vegans, but also a powerfully feminist message, a queer reading, a thought-provoking discussion about neurodivergence and how people view and exploit it... it is just great.

It's a couple of years since I read it, but I do remember that the three different viewpoints added so much. As you say - it is not a platform for vegetarianism, it encompasses so much more

This is ignorance in and about this book and your understanding why vegetarian? You have named this as an "ism". To be a vegetarian is wisdom and a great amount of work as well as knowledge of why one takes this route in life.

I found the book very powerful, the decision she made. It is a decision that becomes a way of life - my husband is vegetarian so I appreciate the work involved making sure that he gets nutritious and delicious meals. Her family just saw her as a rebel and didn't understand her but there was other layers in the book too. I read it a couple of years ago and enjoyed it.
